Guest guest
Does anyone have advice on how to deal with family? I feel strongly that my kids need to eat 6 meals a day, every day they should have raw organic foods and their vitamins. This thanksgiving, we were invited to family's home. All the things that I would NEVER do at home were done. Every step I took, to safeguard their health was questioned. 1) They drink rural tap water. I do not believe in Flouridated water and bought along Distilled water. There is not a drop of fruit juice in the house. There is " CRYSTAL LITE " singles with FAKE SUGAR. I let the kids drink from the 2 liter bottle of Soda pop rather that be exposed to the tap water or the fake sugar. My husband snuck my older son 2 big glasses of tap water. 6 hours later, both of them had the worst smelling gas. The only thing in common with what they ate was the tap water so I deduced that was what caused the gas. 2) They boiled the peeled potatoes in an Aluminum Pot With TAP Water. Luckily my oldest boy refused it. the youngest boy only picked at it. 3) The gravy, had diced in LIVER. The accumulator of heavy metals and god knows what. At serving time, I spooned around it. 4) The creamed corn (along with everything else) was made in a PEELING NONSTICK Pan with 's MSG laced cream of mushroom and cream of chicken which is made from MECHANICALLY SEPARATED chicken which you know has all the POLLUTED INTERNAL ORGAN juices in it too. The green beans were MICROWAVED, with unthoroughly cooked BACON and mixed in with more CRISCO. 5) The Turkey was probably the safest thing to eat, but even that was stuffed with stuffing whose veggies had been sauteed in the PEELING Nonstick Pan. 6) The PIES were homemade with CORN SYRUP rather than sugar and the crust was home rolled with HYDROGENATED OIL/Crisco Butter sticks. So the only thing worth eating was the Apple Pie Filling IF YOU THREW away the crust. 7) The Breakfast was with REGULAR/NON ORGANIC- RGB hormone infused Milk. The coffe was served with HYDROGENATED Creamer. 8) With ALL this PROCESSED HOMEMADE COOKING, they ran out of steam and eat only TWO meals a day. My requests to stop for meals after breakfast (nutritious COCOA PUFFS cereal and soda pop) were satisfied with a stop at the Gas Station to buy HYDROGENATED FAT MOON PIES and Caffienated Cola. 9) FINALLY at the only other real meal all day (8pm), they were served, Chicken fajitas which were regular store bought premarinated in " A SOLUTION " . My request for noncaffienated drinks for the boys was grumbled by a man in the familiy, " You let them drink soda ALL DAY " . I didn't answer the fool. I couldn't give them their Vitamins, except for " EmergenC " which is about the only mainstream enough vitamin supplement I can swing in front them. NEEDLESS to say my kids became unmanageable for most of the 5 days we were there. I was getting judged for not DISCIPLINING them. They come to my house look in my cupboards, see the Organic Ketchup and tell my husband what a waste of money it is. I insist, it doesn't cost much more. AND we don't have the 2 6-Pack a day expense that the rest of his family has so we can afford to put our money in our food. I have NO religious nutritional restrictions, but I have found I need to be obsessive with what my kids eat. The most powerful Medicine in the world is food. My one son is very ADD and I want to cure him. My other son became ADD in the last year and I took some drastic measures to save him from permanent ADD, I hope. For the first time, he is no longer the last one done with his work. At this point, I feel like pulling a religion excuse on them saying I decided the kids and I would only eat Kosher, therefore I need to prepare all their meals and give it to them on my schedule. My kids paternal great grandfather was Jewish. I'm from a Muslim heritage and the in-laws are pretty anti-Muslim and have never respected my eating preferences based on the fact that I grew up without eating Pork. I used to like bacon, but only if it's totally crispy, cooked. I don't think they cook it enough to be safe for eating and they buy the cheapest cuts out there so I can be assured if there is any danger it will be served to my kids. I think it's evil to deprive the kids from any part of their family so, not going is not an option. I have to spend 3 weeks with them every year and it's always the same. I try to take care of my Kids while I'm there. I go to do an errand and come back to find that they have eaten a whole package of generic " fruit chews " and have the runs, or were slipped regular milk instead of Soy Milk and they are up all night with gas. They think I am an obsessive nut. I think at this point, they think what they think, no matter how much I try to accomodate them. Maybe I should go ahead and be obnoxiously insistant on how I manage my kids meals. I should have my own car and go grocery shopping the minute we fly in to visit. They judge my sisterinlaw as well but she won't come and stay with them. They therefore have not as much bad to say about her except that " She only cares about her own family " . I think I could start representing my Dan doctor's nutritional recommendations as actual Prescriptions. It is sooo annoying! Any tips? Guest guest
Hi, Your post was almost comical at the beginning, with the " All American diet " , -- that we on the group understand but the rest of the community want to ignore. But really, you have to work out YOUR priorities, family is important -- that is, your kids, you have to make the decision as to how long you stay, it doesn't have to be 3 whole weeks of anxiety for you and the kids. Make it a shorter stay next time, and your children can recover quicker. > > Does anyone have advice on how to deal with family? > > I feel strongly that my kids need to eat 6 meals a day, every day they > should have raw organic foods and their vitamins. > > This thanksgiving, we were invited to family's home. > > All the things that I would NEVER do at home were done. Guest guest
You know, if it's just for a day or two, I wouldn't stress about all this stuff - one day of poor diet will truly not make a difference - we do all our " good " stuff for YEARS without seeing much of anything, right? (At least that's the case with me) My advice would be just to roll with it. It's not worth stressing yourself and your family over this. What I do is just let them eat pretty much what's there for one day, give lots of enzymes, and then pick up where you left off the following day. Enjoy the time with the family for that one day rather than focusing on the autism thing and all the negatives going on with the food preparation. Life's too short. -------------- Original message -------------- From: " Farhin Ali " <farhin.ali@...> Does anyone have advice on how to deal with family? Guest guest
> All the things that I would NEVER do at home were done. Every step I > took, to safeguard their health was questioned. IMO,you either have to take your own food, or eat theirs without complaining. In my son's case, artificials made him go into crazy rages that would ruin everyone's holiday, so I either took my own food or didn't go. > > I let the kids drink from the 2 liter > bottle of Soda pop rather that be exposed to the tap water or the fake > sugar. The soda is probably made with tap water anyway. The corn syrup in the soda would make my kids crazy. > > 3) The gravy, had diced in LIVER. The accumulator of heavy metals and > god knows what. Why can't you give your children their supplements in front of the relatives? IME, most people Do Not Get that processed food is bad for everyone. There is no convincing them. So don't bother defending your decisions, just calmly say, " This is what I'm doing for my family, " and refuse to talk anymore about it. > My one son is very ADD and I want to cure him. For some kids, food restrictions is all they need to get over ADD. Good luck. Nell
Guest guest
We have no children, but my husband and I are vegan and I'm gluten-free, so if we're going to visit family other than my sister and her family who are also vegan and understand gf, we bring our own food. Some relatives understand and make some dishes that are ok for us and others don't. We sometimes share what we bring, if there's enough, and if others are interested in trying what we've brought. We generally keep our visits short and identify stores in the area where we can buy what we couldn't bring. Of course it helps that there are no children involved and we've been vegan for 15 and 30 years so they've given up trying to change our minds. Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I just reread my post and it is pretty funny to read now. I got some good tips and realize I probably should keep my family-therapy issues contained so as not to distract from the serious medical discussions that yield results. It really was a nice release for me though to vent and be validated that yes what I'm doing is important even if others don't see it. And it's not the end of the world if I have to put on hold for a few days. Thanks! Guest guest
Hi Farhin, So glad you can now see the lighter side of your situation - and that my last post didn't offend you. Venting is important though, and getting some feedback from the group -- in validating your concerns but also realising that we still have to " live " in a community (including families for some). I take ALL my son's foods and drinks to functions, I'm lucky since he is so disabled that no-one questions me anymore (he's 11). I occasionally imagine that I can let him " eat out " but he complains miserably during, after, etc..... I'm over trying to please anyone else, just keeping my son balanced. na Australia > > > > > > Does anyone have advice on how to deal with family? > > > > > > I feel strongly that my kids need to eat 6 meals a day, every day > > they > > > should have raw organic foods and their vitamins. > > > > > > This thanksgiving, we were invited to family's home. > > > > > > All the things that I would NEVER do at home were done. Guest guest
I cooked a seperate thanksgiving dinner since my daughter is gfcf and I also do not give her fake food or cook on bad cookware. The relatives we don't see much said " We did not use any dairy. " I asked , " You didn't slather butter all over? " He walked away. My daughter felt included in the dinner and did not end of screaming and crying in pain. I gave her supplements and got strange looks but just said they were vitamins. The longest we have been away from home is a few days and I cook everything ahead of time and bring a cooler. I would not try to stay longer because of all the problems you had. You are not going to change their minds so only stay as long as you can follow your schedule. Guest guest
Believe me when I say that I'm not being judgemental, I am asking an honest question.....I have been gc/cf with my son also in the past. What I am asking is this....do you really think that all of this helps your child? Now I know you might say that you wouldnt do it if you didnt think so, but I'm seriously asking (and completely without sarcasm, I know how some things can " sound " when a person is reading), but can you really say that if you used the things that you say you used and then gave them up, that it would really have any impact on your child(ren)? I'm curious because I did so many of the things that you spoke about....being so strict with the diet when my son was youger and then slowly he didnt want to eat all that stuff anymore and we gave it up. At the time, there werent really prepared stuff in the health food stores. After that, I never really noticed anything different about him like regression or anything like that. Thanks. Guest guest
Believe me, I was a skeptic in the beginning. I read about it and laughed. Months later I came across it again and read something that caught my attention. It described the average responder as someone who is picky and eats mostly dairy and bread, esp. milk (half gallon a day). Also the child seems high after eating by spinning in circles and rubbing against the floor. This was my daughter. I figured it was a cheap route to try. In 2 days of cutting out dairy she looked me in the eyes and talked in full sentenses. Prior she only spoke in fragments and memorized cartoons. I had not even cut out the gluten. When I removed the gluten she started to be aware of her surroundings and her hypersensativity decreased. Two months later I went to get her tested for autism and the evaluator seemed annoyed that I was wasting her time (speech delay only). The school psychologist had tested her 3 months earlier and placed her under autism for preschool. Home life was miserable before the diet. I had to hold her down to change her, brush her teeth, etc because of severe sensory issues and rigidity. Rigidity and tantrums decreased over the next months and she potty trained herself. She is 5 now and in a regular kindergarden class with no problems at school and a good report card. She has been on the diet for 8 months with no infractions. Improvement like this could be due to a lot of factors but the diet is #1. I don't believe it works for everyone though. My daughter fit the profile. But I have been giving her enzymes for the last 2 months and do plan to challenge the diet with the enzymes first and then without once we have done chelation for awhile. I believe her gut has healed except for yeast from chelation, so I do see a day without the diet. Guest guest
I'm happy for you and that you've had success with it for your daughter. Looking back, my son doesnt/didnt really fit that profile with highs/lows. I'm glad for you though and especially for your daughter. [ ] Re: Holidays, Family and judgement of vitamins special meals. Guest guest
Hi , I am not offended by your questions, and I am really sorry to hear that you tried so many things with limited success. I can tell you that the GFCF Diet was/is HUGE for our son. When we have an " infraction " we get a " reaction " , and not a good one. Regarding supplements, most of what we have tried has been good, but not all. I don't try everything under the sun and stick to stuff that I am pretty sure is in the " mainstream " of our little counter culture. Oh, we are also chelating (the only truly safe and effective way - IMHO) would anyone like to guess what protocol ? At this point, based on our tremendous success so far, I would change NOTHING. (except starting sooner) Sure, I am always fine tuning and have things I plan to do as time goes on, but for the most part, full speed ahead ! I have been reading your posts and I must admit to having this thought . " I wish she would let us help her get her child back on track " . I have a few ideas that I haven't shared because your posts have leaned toward the " I don't think I want to try this again and be disappointed again " . I can't help but wonder how your child would have done if you could go back in time and you got on this list at the beginning .. :-( Good Luck ! Neil _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of casti71@... Sent: Thursday, November 30, 2006 3:39 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Re: Holidays, Family and judgement of vitamins special meals. Thanks. Sal's mom [ ] Re: Holidays, Family and judgement of vitamins special meals. Guest guest
Hi Neil, Thanks for the reply. I actually have been a member of this list for a few years now. I was off for the last few months, but now I've come back. I dont post too often though. As for being disappointed when something does not help...sure its disappointing, but please dont misunderstand what I mean by being choosy. I have pumped by son full of so many different things since he was 3 years old that looking back may have not been good for him and him getting painful injections. He's had GF/CF/SF diet, allergy tests, secretin injections, many various supplements, chelation, glutathione injections, vitamin A injections, Actos, Aricept, Ritalin among other things that I probably am forgetting at this very moment. Oh, he also had autitory training. Of course I would sound disappointed that nothing has worked for Sal, but I am more concerned about causing him harm. Believe me....and I'm sure you would because the parent of an autistic child understands that you want to find something wrong, something concrete to fix. It just hasnt been like that for my son. Right now he goes to school full time in an ABA program and has a teacher at home two hours a week after school. I am back on the list for some ideas. I'd love to hear yours. Any ideas are always welcome. Thanks. [ ] Re: Holidays, Family and judgement of vitamins special meals. Guest guest
Wow, there's a lot here... A couple of comments; regarding the in-laws and the food issues during 3 week stays, if you cannot get out of it, you could type up a letter that says something like, due to medically diagnosed food intolerance, allergies, systemically dysfunctional detoxification, errors of metabolism, neuro-cognitive dysfunction, leaky gut, fungal / bacterial overgrowth of the intestines and colon etc. etc. (your child's name here) is medically advised to avoid all food additives, dyes, preservatives, inorganic cookware and utensils (including plates and cups), gluten (as found in barley, wheat, oats and in many other substances such as shampoo, soap, play-doh, glue), casein (anything dairy), pesticide fed meat and plants, hormone fed meat, GMO foods, nitrates (as in bacon) etc. It is also advised that only purified water is consumed. See if you can, get your DAN doc to sign it, if not, you sign it and mail it to the family. Maybe if they realize that you have medical backing they will listen... Regarding the " is it worth it " question (not being sarcastic or mean). First of all, I think that we've all been there. When you're trying and trying and just not getting results it just plain sucks. It is so frustrating, expensive, time consuming and anxiety producing. We had to go through a lot of things that didn't work before we found ones that did. And what really stinks is that each kid is different so there is no " protocol " . I will tell you honestly, we realized that our son was not mentally retarded (which we thought was a possible disbility presenting along with ASD) when we started MB12 shots. Eye contact began to increase w/ vitamin A and Bethanechol. Folinic acid has helped with stimming. Going GFCF eliminted horrible diarrhea (it was completely liquid). Magnesium and B-vitamins have helped with attention, focus and hyperactivity. We still have a long road ahead of us but these things really do make a tangible difference. I wish you the best of luck :-) Neil Willet <thecomputershop@...> wrote: Hi , I am not offended by your questions, and I am really sorry to hear that you tried so many things with limited success. Thanks. Guest guest
Hi , It really saddens me when I hear about how a parent has poured their heart and soul into helping their child and has not had great success. I must admit to a bit of guilty feelings for how well our son is doing. I actually don't post many success stories for that very reason. I am by no means the expert on this site, but I know there are plenty who are. Why not post an update of your current status, symptoms and any other pertinent info and we can all have a crack at it. Nothing would make me happier than for us (everyone on this list) to uncover some clue that jumpstarts some success. Good Luck ! Neil _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of casti71@... Sent: Thursday, November 30, 2006 9:58 PM Subject: Re: [ ] Re: Holidays, Family and judgement of vitamins special meals. Guest guest
, Not all kids need the diet and I have thought a couple times that the danger of the diet is when a child is a nonresponder to the diet it discourages parents from trying other things. The diet is often touted as the cure all for everything. Ours not only did not respond to the diet, but got worse on the diet; lost weight and language, got huge dark circles under her eyes and cried continuously. Believe it or not, people told us we were not doing it right. We took her right off the diet, she improved, we continued with biomed and she recovered. Nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, is the answer for all of our kids. You are the expert of your child, choose what works for him/her regardless of what other people say. Guest guest
I agree. The GFCF diet has about a 50% success rate. Now, 50% is HUGE in our world, so I think all parents should still give GFCF a try for a few months (unless the response is so negative like in 's case). We tried GFCF(soy free, too) when my son was 19 months. I am sure it stopped his downward spiral in to Autism. I dropped it after 6 months (long story) and restarted GFCF again 2 years later. That time, after 2 years of other random biomedical interventions, the diet didn't seem to be effective enough to offset the hard work. I *do* think going organic as much as possible is a must. Also, being smart about the food choices: not letting my son eat only cheese or only wheat products. Varied diet. No artificial sweetners, low sugar, etc. That is STILL enough to draw scrutiny and eye rolling from family! We are snowed in today! No school. Guest guest
First of all, congrats on all the great interventions you have done for your kids. In my view, you have a few options (bring your own organic turkey - we got a organic one from Trader Joes - the best and juciest bird we ever tasted) and offer to prepare a few side dishes that you shop for so you can have good food and good leftovers for them. You can also bring your own snacks and do the best you can and deal with some side effects. Or you can cut short these trips and explain that their lack of respect for your dietary and health interventions make it impossible to stay as long as you'd like. Cite specifics (giving them regular milk and fruit chews instead of water and fruit) and etc. If they want to respect your boundaries and work with you, great. But if not, you'll still visit but maybe not as long because your kids need more support. Whenever we travel, we bring along our 3 gallon jugs of water and ice highly filtered water. If we go camping, stay in a hotel or visit my parents. We have our own room so they don't notice everything we bring in (we bring out own pillows, beds for our dogs, gifts if it's holiday time and our luggage). Well better luck next year. Maybe if you offer to buy and prepare some of the meal, that will help. If they are not open to your prep, you can certainly insist on buying the turkeys and helping out that way (I found the juiciest turkeys ever and we want to bring them as our contribution to the meal). At least you'll have some good meat for them. Best wishes,
