Guest guest
Dear Janet, I’ve been wanting to go on a cruise for so long, but what you described is exactly what I’m afraid would happen to me. As far as your swollen foot goes, I have that problem a lot as well. My doctor can’t figure it out either. I think PA can inflame the blood vessels just like any other part of our body. I’ve had 3 blood clot tests done and all were negative, yet my leg swells like something is terribly wrong. I’m on 2 different types of water pills and even then it’s not normal. If I walk or do anything at all it swells, and it’s been like this ever since I tried Enbrel a few years ago. If stopping the Mobic doesn’t help, I would consider changing the Enbrel as well. Have you ever tried Humira? It didn’ t help me, but I know Kathy F. our moderator does just great on it. She feels like it has changed her pain levels drastically. In the meantime, all I can suggest if getting your foot elevated and finding a new doctor like you said. I wish I knew someone I could recommend, but good rheumy are so hard to find. I hope you feel better soon. Take care and I’ll be thinking of you. Love, Fran [ ] need new doctor I just back back from a cruise which should have been great fun but turned out to be agonizing. I was in so much pain just trying to walk aroung the ship. To go into town my husband pushed me in a provided wheelchair. By the third day of the cruise I could not recognize my right foot. It was so swollen that it looked like a whole bologna to me. At that point all I could do was ice on and off most of the cruise. I came back yesterday and saw my rheumy today. I am really fed up with him. He kept saying what are you on again. I told him mobic 15mg and double Enbrel. He told my to reduce the mobic because it causes swelling and that I needed a stronger water pill. He said I am filled with water. I just thought my foot was all swollen from the PA. I told him I was in pain and he just stared at me with a blank look. I asked to change to remicade and he said ins would not pay because it is only approved for rheumatoid A. Then he said my rheumatoid factor was borderline so lets do blood and I should call him the end of the week. Meanwhile my foot is so swollen and I am in pain. Can't my foot be swollen from the PA and not water retention. Anyway I know I have asked before but would really like some recommedations of doctors in NYC or Long Island. Guest guest
Janet PA can cause the foot to swell, sometimes but I have found (for myself anyways) and to the extent you are saying that it is water retention and if I don't take my water pill every day the swelling/bloating starts. I can gain over 10 lbs just from water in only a couple of days. I would at least give the water pill a try and if after a couple of days to a week there is no difference then you know that is not the problem. Good luck Dick > > > I just back back from a cruise which should have been great fun but > turned out to be agonizing. I was in so much pain just trying to > walk aroung the ship. Guest guest
Hi Janet, Sorry about your cruise and your Dr. I had my foot swell up two times in my life-I broke the top of it and walked on it for weeks until I went to a Dr., the 2nd time was with my PA. I can't believe how these Rheumys can be. My Rheumy said that PA doesn't get into your back or spine and I thought I had read somewhere on the internet that it does-maybe I'm wrong. Also your Dr. should have done x-rays-not knowing what was going on. God Bless, Sue. janet <fam24@...> wrote: I just back back from a cruise which should have been great fun but turned out to be agonizing. I was in so much pain just trying to walk aroung the ship. Guest guest
Hi Janet, I go to this doctor every other month and have always found parking on the street. Most of the street parking is metered so you have to bring quarters. There is a parking garage around the corner - expensive - but there as a backup. Parking will be a problem everywhere in Manhattan and in some parts of Brooklyn - it is not like in the suburbs where you have parking available everywhere. Kathy F. I mapped the office address on mapquest. Is that an area where parking is very difficult. Thanks, Janet
Guest guest
Hi Janet, I'm wondering, as I too have a swollen ankle (right) and I had a cortizone shot in Sept for it, it took the swelling and pain away for almost 2 months. I hear it's suppose to last longer but for me it didn't. I'm now being referred to an orthopedic surgeon for ankle arthrosis. It's fusion of the ankle joint. If your anke is bad and causes you that much problems, maybe this is something you can discuss with your rhuemy. Sorry to hear your vacation was bombarded with pain! No good....wishing you well. Sincerely janet <fam24@...> wrote: I just back back from a cruise which should have been great fun but turned out to be agonizing. I was in so much pain just trying to walk aroung the ship. Guest guest
hi sue, i'm writing to say that you are correct, and your doctor is wrong. people with pa most definitely can get spine involvement, it is called psoriatic spondylitis.... i think i have this happening to me right now. my rheumy has listened to me (sort of, in a patronizing type of way <groan>), but wouldn't even check out my back - blames everything on fibro and won't consider anything new might be taking place.... very frustrating. he has at least scheduled me for a bone scan so we will see (though did say he was sure it would show nothing!).... there are some wonderful websites that discuss pa spondylitis.... i've been researching it myself recently - try www.spondylitis.org. i believe this site discusses it. take care sue - i'm so glad your hip surgery went well, and that you survived the kidney punch - lol - not that i was laughing reading about all that you've been through, quite the opposite in fact. i'm so glad you are feeling better now. xx karen > > Hi Janet, > > Sorry about your cruise and your Dr. I had my foot swell up two times in my life-I broke the top of it and walked on it for weeks until I went to a Dr., the 2nd time was with my PA. Guest guest
Hi Janet, An ankle arthrosis is a surgery that has the ankle joint fused. You would loose all natural mobility to move the ankle up and down, but it stops the arthritis in it's tracks, takes the pain and swelling away. This is a last resort option. Some alternative therapies should be sought before thinking of surgery. You may want to check into physio therapy for the ankle. Have you tried using tensor bandages to secure it while walking? This can help reduce the swelling aswell. Rotating hot and cold compresses may also relief some pain and swelling. Best wishes, Dove fam24@... wrote: In a message dated 2/3/2005 5:50:00 AM Eastern Standard Time, dovedthe1@... writes: I'm now being referred to an orthopedic surgeon for ankle arthrosis. thanks for your help. Guest guest
Hi and thank you for your kind words, You are always sweet and always make me feel better. That is what my Rheumy blamed my spine pain on was me having Fibro. I think maybe my Rheumy is getting " burned out " on seeing patients with PA-that is way he acts to me anyhow. I guess when he went to medical school he first was taught to be a GP where he patients were treated and he didn't see them for awhile because they got better with their sickness, etc. To have to treat patients that will always have this disease and probably have other illness that follow probably is depressing to him. When I was employed by a local hospital in the late 1980's a Dr. that had a hallway full of terminated ill patients with cancer-when he walked past me one day (he must have been having a bad day) he said " why didn't I go to school to be a plummer like my father! " . When my family can't get over me being in the hospital so much I tell them that I think everything is related to my PA in a way. I'm hoping after this month I will not see another surgery suite ever!! I have to go and have my stint removed Feb. 17!! So I'm hoping for March as a good month for me!! Guest guest
Janet, It sure sounds like an Ace bandage to me. Kathy F. In a message dated 2/5/2005 7:43:58 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, dovedthe1@... writes: Hi Janet, A tensor bandage is like a cloth (stetchy) material that you wrap around your injured joint - example: ankle. You can adjust the tension to your liking by how tightly you wrap it on. In Canada, they are easily purchased at any drug store and range anywhere from $3 - $20 depending on the quality of bandage you buy. This maybe something worth giving a try, it does help reduce swelling and pain - for me usually short term. Let me know how you make out! Guest guest
Hi my name is Theresa and my first son was fully vaccianted and suffered because of it. As a result I have not given my second son any and the other day he got bitten by a dog and my ped really put heavy pressure on me to give a tetanus shot so after much crying and thought I went back and asked to see the material that comes with the shot before giving it to him. They all looked at me like I was nuts and after reading for about a minute there it was thermisnol-mercury and both nurse and doc looked shocked but said it is a very low dose and would be fine and I walked out. My problem is I am expecting another in a month and really need to find a doctor who will not pressure or make me feel like the worst mother in the world for not giving vaccines. I live in Manorville, NY and I am willing to travel. MY older son sees a DAN doctor about 45 minutes away but would really like to find someone closer but would love your input. Thanks,
Guest guest
First case tetnaus does nothing for rabies. Which is what you get from animal bites. And any doc that tells me that " it's only a little bit of mercury " is in my opinion very ignorant or skipped basic chemistry in college. I too am in NY, but upstate. I have a great Ped, she does not pressure us to do anything. And has no problem with us not vaccinating. Stick to your guns! After all, these people are not the ones who bear the burden of the damage our kids end up with. My doc is not anywhere near you guys. But I would get out that phone book and start looking for a more flexible practice or even a holistic physician, they will treat your children too. > > Hi my name is Theresa and my first son was fully vaccianted and > suffered because of it.
