Hi,

Is stevia powder suitable for diabetics.

I know the one by Swanson has some sugar added so this

one is out.

Is there any brand that has virtually zero glycemic count or

no sugar & can be safely taken by diabetics to substitute

for sugar (artificial sweeteners is not favoured)

Thanks

G

Stevia, powder or liquid, is great for diabetics. Check out the info at

_www.herbalhealer.com_ (http://www.herbalhealer.com) . They carry Stevia.

As far as I know. I use it and have hypoglycemia.

Way safer than sugar or sugar substitutes.

<<Is stevia powder suitable for diabetics.>>

I know many say it is but at least one informed doctor I know says that

it isn't and raises something dangerously and something else remains

normal - sorry my toxic brain can't remember exactly what she said. You

can always try it and test your blood sugar I guess to see how it

effects you.

I do hear that xylitol is good for diabetics and I use it myself (I'm

just IR at this point). It's got some great benefits like being good

for the teeth. I mainly use it in the occasionally latte, cereal or

green tea (since it's so expensive) - but I have baked with it (1/2

sugar and 1/2 xylitol). They say it measures teaspoon for teaspoon like

sugar but I find you need more xylitol in baking to make things sweet

and it's so expensive that I just halve it .

I get mine from Iherb for about $12.95 a 3 lb bag. I think vitacost has

a 3lb bag too that is more like $14.something. One friend gets the

runs from it - but I find it to work very well for tea and an

occasional sweetener (for me). :)

There was an article a couple of years ago on the website for Science in the

Public Interest about Stevia (in very large amounts) causing cancer,

reproductive problems in males, and problems with energy metabolism in lab rats,

so I would use it in moderation. Just because it's plant-based doesn't

automatically mean it's safe. A sprinkle here and there is probably OK, but I

wouldn't be consuming cup-fulls of the stuff. The study points out that it's

been used In Japan for many years, but in the US we tend to over-consume

everything. It's still banned in Canada and the EU.

Hello Gol,

Try Xylitol, the best kind is the stuff made from tree bark.

Also good for your teeth.

Good Luck !

Thanks Neil, thanks all.

I found out from our local store here that Stevia leaves are allowed

in our country(Singapore) but not stevia powder/concentrate.

So don't want to take risk of facing a hefty fine for bringing in

Stevia powder.

Thanks

Gol
