If I were you, I would go through the hassle of using oral

chelators. After a while, they don't even wake up for dosing.

I'll second that. Our son has been making slow, steady, and undeniable

progress with ALA. And he is very easy to get up at night almost

always now where it used to be quite difficult.

And it costs next to nothing; while that should never be the most

important issue it can be a big plus to this option.

Did you use the TD-DMSA and TD-ALA every three hours? Most people here

use Andy Cutler's protocol which is designed to keep the blood levels

of the chelator pretty even for 3 days in order to minimize

redistribution of metals in the body. It calls for using ALA every 3

hours, DMSA every 4 hours (or every 3 if using with ALA) and DMPS

every 8 hours.

dosing amount and timing are important to seeing progress. As are

supplements and treating for yeast. Did your child have a hair test?

What metals were a problem? I know it takes years to remove metals.

My son does not take pills at all. We give oral dmsa/ala but put it

into food, treats or a small amount of juice. When we first began

treatment my son was very adverse to eating or drinking anything.

Including juice with vitamins in it. But he learned that this was

not a choice. And with support from us and improvement with

chelation he has lost some of his adversion to eating/drinking

things. We are using the every three hour protocol for three days on

and four or more days off as per Andy's protocol. It is important to

follow a frequent dose in removing metals. Post what protocols you

have tried and what supplements..we may be able to help.

I keep hearing DAN! docs are disappointed with TD-DMSA but have seen

good results with TD-ALA. Anyone hear the same? Our DAN! has

suggested we do the oral DMSA route after a year of TD-DMSA... she

is one of the more experienced/respected DAN!s out there... and she

isn't super satisfied with TD-DMSA.

So, you might not be chelating at all if transdermal is all you've

been using for the past year. Give oral a good try before giving up

all together. You *could* try TD-ALA for awhile but it might be

another dud.

For us, the key with nasty tasting oral meds is mixing them with the

smallest amount of food possible to cover the taste. That way, we

just need to get that one mouthful in. Some even make chocolate bon-

bons filled with supplements; who has that recipe?

Good luck.

Pam

p.s. did your MD ever order urine toxic metals tests to see if

metals were coming out while chelating? These tests can be

misleading since it is just a snapshot in time; but I'm curious. My

son has made good strides with TD-DMSA behaviorally, but not on

paper (labs show no Hg this past year with urine tests) which is why

my doc is so discouraged. We've also been using oral ALA.

SOMETHING is making him better!

I've been using TD-ALA + TD-DMSA every 3 hours during the day and 4 hours at

night.

Thank you all for your advise, its so amazing how wonderful everyone on this

group is.

I've been doing the Andy Cutler protocol for the last 8 months (TD only) 3

hours day and 4 hour night and my son is taking digestive enzymes, probiotics,

CLO, minerals, vitamin B's and C. I haven't had a hair test done ever, but did

complete a urine test 6 months ago which showed almost no mercury coming out but

a little lead and arsenic being excreted. I am seeing my DAN doctor on Friday

and will request a hair test.

Also he's been on Diflucan a few times for 2 week intervals over the last year

but I think I might have to keep him on it consistently throughout chelation.

I've tried plugging his nose to force him to swallow he just gags and projects

it back out....and since he doesn't have a big sweet tooth I'm a little stumped

on what else to try.

Any chance you can teach him to swallow really small capsules? That

is what I did with my son. When he realized he could choose between

the disgusting bites I was making him eat and taking teeny tiny caps,

it took him about 4 seconds to opt for the latter.

When you used TD products from Coastal & Silsby what dose and dosing schedule

did you use? What did his hair elements test show? Did he meet the counting

rules? What supplements/diet/therapies are you doing/have you tried? What are

the behaviors/ASD symptoms you're dealing with?

Nadia,

Make sure the doc order the DDI Hair Elements test so counting rules can be

applied.

Three of my kids opted for the capsules. One still insists on the

disgusting mixture.

My favorite was when I mixed the OLE or Uva Ursi in with the fish oil,

GSE, and all the other stuff and managed to get it in him. Man-o-man,

was that nasty!

Yep, #3 has taken some nasty stuff! I always ask him if he would

prefer the capsules, and he always says no.
