Altho zinc helps many kids with this problem, for my #3, mouthing and oral behaviors were caused by eating foods or supplements not tolerated, or yeast overgrowth. Try dropping the magnesium, maybe find another brand with fewer fillers. >>By then I learnt that Zn is involved in mouthing > tendencies so I am now giving him Zn. The supplement recommended for > children is 10mg but I am giving 40mg (slow increases until mouthing > tendency went to low- but it is still there). I am worried that 40mg may be > too high and will affect his copper levels. Please advise. The typical daily maximum that is recommended, is child's weight plus 20mg. So unless your child weighs less than 20 pounds, you can keep that dose if it is helping. For my #1, when I gave zinc it caused a major nose bleed, which is one symptom of low copper, so watch for that. For my #2, improper zinc/copper ratio caused teeth grinding and hand posturing. It did not matter if it was the zinc or the copper that was too high, both high zinc and high copper caused either the grinding or the posturing or both.
