Guest guest
This is my first exposure to this site and would appreciate opinions. I am the father of 4yo boy on spectrum. My Dan doctor has been very good giving us advice on supplements and enzymes and blood work. My son has been steadily improving. He wanted to do a DMSA challange but there is no way to get a urine sample from my son. He is not potty trained yet and we tried a collection bag without success. He said we should try chelation anyway which I don't have a problem with but after doing some research and reading the FAQ on this site I am questioning the instructions. My son is about 35 lb. I was told the dosage should be 500 mg per day which should be split up by 250 mg in the am and 250mg at bedtime. The dosage in the FAQ says 1mg per lb of body weight every 4 hr. If that's a 24 hr period it would be 6x35=210mg per day. Also we were given capsules which we were told is ok to mix with drinks since he won't swollow capsules. He sleeps really well at night and I doubt that we could get him to drink at night consistantly. Any advice woold be appreciated. Guest guest
Hi Ron, Welcome to the list. Most people on this list find challenges an unnecessary risk that provides little, if any, useful information. A large single dose like the one you're speaking of could very well result in great discomfort for your child and perhaps even redistribution of metals into places like the brain. Even if you could figure out a way to collect urine, I would avoid them. I'm not sure where you got the 1 mg/pound from the FAQ, but Andy Cutler, whose protocol most of us follow, recommends 1/8 to 1/2 mg/pound per dose. Most of us started at the low end and work up. DMSA should be dosed every 4 hours. There are people who have dosed every 8 hours, but as I just wrote to Molly, I have read many reports of kids suffering regression on that sort of schedule. Just to give you an example: I weigh 150 pounds and am at worst only mildly toxic. When I started taking 25 mg of DMSA with my 25 mg of ALA, I didn't feel so great--no external symptoms, just a general feeling of crappiness. When I still had 3 amalgams, just breathing in the ALA/DMSA while I was preparing chelation doses for my son would give me an excruciating headache about 4 hours later. These lessons help me remain patient and cautious in chelating my son. Night dosing can seem daunting at first, but the reality is that kids don't need to wake up to take the chelator. Only you do. Many people use syringes and the child takes the dose half-asleep. You may want to make sure that your child gets a little sip of just plain water to wash down any remaining DMSA. I hope this might help. I'm glad to hear your son is already improving :-) Anita > > This is my first exposure to this site and would appreciate opinions. I > am the father of 4yo boy on spectrum. Guest guest
Ron, what I do is mix my DMSA / ALA in as little amount of organic pear sauce baby food that I can. My son will stop eating or drinking if I try to put something in his food or drink. He'll sit up and let me spoon it to him without waking. I buy my DMSA here without a prescription but they do like to know that you are at least working with a doc, which you are. nbnus.com > > > <p>This is my first exposure to this site and would > appreciate opinions. Guest guest
Ron, I buy my DMSA from vrp.com I have administered the night doses of DMSA in a liquid using a syringe and also mixed into yogurt. You can divided the 100 mg capsule into doses that are an appropriate size. It is a bit trickier trying to divide the 100 mg rather than a 25 mg, but it can be done. Some people have had good success with the TD, but even DAN doctors now are stating that oral is more effective than TD. I think I may have mentioned in another post that some people swear by the flavoured Kirkman's DMSA. My son was quite orally defensive but with patience and time he now swallows the most repugnant mixtures you can imagine. Two things that helped the most for this were a viral protocol and really making an effort to make the whole experience as pleasant as possible for him with big praise, favourite juice as a follow-up, and my own calm consistancy. Doing what we do now with ease did NOT seem possible a year ago with my orally defensive, stubborn, very strong, nonverbal kid. I hope this might help. Guest guest
I have a nephew with autism. My brother and sister-in-law went to parent support groups for a while. They said that when people introduced themselves rather than asking the child's name or age they asked " So, how many foods does your child eat. " I think the average was 6. If you happen to live anywhere near a Trader Joe's they sell some good gluten-free health bars he might like. Guest guest
quick thought...Did you look at Moria's site - she has compiled & sorted a large number of posts on chelating...In the files sections, the " file " I usually started with, when looking for chelating information, was the " Andy Index " which redirects you to her site...wishing you the best answers, elizabeth > > I am sure this question has been asked a million times here, but > everytime I try and do a search I get the server busy code, it's very > frustrating. > > Anyway, we did 6 rounds this summer of just ALA on my 3 year old.
