Guest guest
Hi Mark, Have you read The Cholesterol Myths? Is what you wrote below basically what it says in the book? No wonder I have very little faith in the medical community anymore! Do you know of a way to raise cholesterol if it is too low? So it sounds like we are right not to treat my husband high cholesterol. > > > > > > Pam, > > > > > > I think you are either fortunate or have worked hard to have the > > numbers > > > you do. Guest guest
, I actually met Dr. Ravnskov and had the absolute pleasure of spending time with him. He has a great deal of knowledge in the field and puts forth very compelling arguments. His book is on my shelf but I can't honestly say I have read it cover to cover. Dr. Abramson's Overdo$ed America is another one that is an absolute must read. It contains very strong research based arguments against the flippant use of statins and many other drugs. This comes from an MD who was a professor of medicine at Harvard, so he is not your typical alternative health practitioner. Still, your comment about not treating your husband's high cholesterol may not be quite right. I am not a physician so this is purely an opinion of mine and not medical advice. The definition of high cholesterol should be looked at first, your husbands age second, a family history of CVD and whether he has had any heart issues should all be looked at. A fully informed MD is the right place to go, but your interest in being educated as well will help make the right choice. It may well benefit your husband to be on statins. Guest guest
After I reread your email I realized you were talking about the author of the book -sorry. I am not opposed to treating my husband's high cholesterol. I just told him that he should read the book and do a little homework before taking his mds advice to use the rx. With no family history of problems, he hasn't made it a priority but it still concerns me. Thanks for your thoughts. > > > > > > > > Pam, > > > > > > > > I think you are either fortunate or have worked hard to have > the > > > numbers > > > > you do. Guest guest
Just found an interesting article for anyone looking to lower blood cholesterol without using meds. Guest guest
Hi, It's Me: Low Cholesterol, Depressed Gal. I'm wondering if I should make an effort to raise this total cholesterol number. In the past, it has been as low as 113 (I've been tested about 5 times in the past 10 years due to first trimester pregnancy testing). This new total cholesterol of 150 is actually as high as it ever has been (123 in January '06). I've been taking about 1 gram EFAs (fish oil) daily for about 18 months. Anything else I can do? Personally, I take some comfort in knowing my cardiac health is protected by my low numbers. Triglycerides are also very low. I would love to enjoy my long life MORE by alleviating this nagging depression. I'm not willing to go back on antidepressants at this point. Thanks for the discussion. Guest guest
I'm also a low cholesterol person, with both personal and family history of low cholesterol, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. I think there's no harm in us cholesterol-challenged people eating a certain amount of the foods that cause problems for those with high cholesterol, such as animal fats. I would not be surprised if it helps. Here is Dr. Weil's opinion (a few years old, so don't know his current opinion) on low cholesterol: http://www.drweil.com/u/QA/QA43423/ I think the comment by one researcher that " brain cells with low levels of cholesterol may have fewer than normal receptors for the mood-elevating neurotransmitter serotonin " is interesting. Since SSRI drugs increase the number of receptors (if I remember right), they would be helpful with this. That's not a recommendation (my own experience with SSRIs attests to the problems with these drugs) but I found it interesting. -- > > > > Just found an interesting article for anyone looking to lower blood > > cholesterol without using meds. Guest guest
Zero. I had about 11 of them removed (safely)in December 2004. Guest guest
Thanks, I'll be sure to take a look at this link when I have some more time. I've taken the prescription drugs off and on for about 18 years. Started with tricyclics and ended with Effexor. Getting off of Effexor was such a nightmare experience; it has spooked me about ever taking SSRIs again. The tricyclics were easy to stop, but the side effects (extreme constipation) were totally undesireable. Honestly, I feel better OFF of the antidepressants than I usually felt on them. Taking high dose EPA has helped (fish oil; 1 gram daily), though I wonder if I need a higher dose? I have more fatigue these days, which I believe might be related to chelation (oral ALA) and perhaps not supplementing something that I should be supplementing. I also had my amalgams removed about 18 months ago. A lot has changed (I'm older, too!). Thanks again, Pam > > > > > > Just found an interesting article for anyone looking to lower blood > > > cholesterol without using meds.
