If it was bleeding, then you probably don't have to worry about

tetanus, because tetanus is anaerobic and can't exist with oxygen, and

blood would contain oxygen.

If you are concerned, consider immune globulin

Thanks Dana,

It was bleeding, though not profusely. I have opted against the

shot as it appears I would not be able to get one without mercury.

You can get a tetanus shot without Mercury. It will have to be

special-ordered. You have a couple day window, according to our DAN! doc.

keep cleaning it with hydrogen perioxide. Tetanus supposedly can't survive

with it. My DAN doctor also said that the only real place you could possibly

get tetanus is around horses. you have 3 days from incident to get the shot or

the immunoglobin shot. there are also antibiotics that you can take should

you come down with it. Chances are slim, but do lots of research so that you

are comfortable. Oh, facial wounds are more of a concern than wounds on

your extremities.

Hope it heals well.

Thanks! I did clean it with hydrogen peroxide last night and this

morning. Ouch. I will do some more research, but I am comfortable

that things will be fine. Famous last words, I know.

Thanks Dr. Popplewell,

It wasn't really a gash, but not really a puncture either. The nail

head kind of dug into my skin and then ripped about 1/2 inch long by

1/8 inch wide piece of skin so that it is hanging on on the 1/8 inch

side. I should probably go rip the skin off and get more hydrogen

peroxide in there. Yuck. I get queasy at the sight of blood. And

ouch. But here goes. Thanks for the help.

Except that the skin kind of stuck back on. Still a gash?

Thanks to all! Glad to know it is available without mercury, even if

it does have the other yucky stuff.

Anne,

Let me share our experience. Eight years ago, before I had come across

any of this vaccine info formally, our daughter had any injury that was

filthy. She was pushed into a rock bed[it saved her life] but she broke

her jaw, lost a couple of permanent teeth and had a mouth full of dirt

and gravel, including nasty stuff packed into the root beds of the

missing teeth. Of course ER wanted to give her a booster as it had been

7 yrs since her last one. It was that last DT booster at age 6 that put

her into the downward spiral from which she still has not fully

recovered. My 'mommy gut' said 'no way'. It was a very difficult

decision with docs and spouse ragging about it. Now it would be a no

brainer. Her younger brother sheared off most of his shin skin down to

the bone on a metal doc a few years later. Also lots of pressure for a

booster. By then, I did know the vaccine connection. He did not get a

booster either. His wound got nasty infected, required IV antibiotics

etc but tetanus was not even in question during the several weeks of

healing. As Dr Jim has said, the booster does not even offer protection

in the moment. No way would I ever vaccinate anyone I cared about

again!!

Your daughter's experience sounds awful! It sounds like you did a

great job of holding your ground in both instances. Good for you.

My little guy won't be getting any more vaccines unless his life

depends on it. Thanks to this lovely adventure we are all sharing

in, I am very quickly learning that not everything is life-

threatening enough to warrant the interventions so often prescribed.
