He has always been at the top of his clas and even in the challenge

program(for advanced kids) he reads at 9th grade level and does 8th

grade math .(hes in 4th grade) He just started going to a new school in

January and has been having trouble ever since. Im not sure if its the

curriculm being more difficult or the teacher less tolerant or what it

is. Im thinking he may have aspergers because a lot of his behavior is

similar to my younger son.(he has to have things in certin places , has

to have the movies on the shelf like a jinga puzzel instead of stacked

neatly, chews on his clothes and other things) I never knew anything

about apsergers until my younger son was diagnosed about 3 yrs ago and

now within the last year I am noticing more and more similarities

between my boys.I also have 2 daughters ages 7 and 3 who dont have any

aspergers traits. So my question is--has anyone recently had an older

child diagnosed? If so what prompted you to get them tested ? And what

did tests did they do??Im wondering if they are the same as the tests

they did for my son who was diagnosed when he was 2 and a half.

You might want to check out the symptoms for NVLD (nonverbal learning disorder)

it's similar to Asperger's but in some ways, a little milder. Maybe that would

fit your son? I really don't know but it may be worth checking out too. Good

luck.

Hi,

I have an 11 year old son with AS. He was diagnosed last year but we've

known that he had it for the past two years and we've had him in therapy. If

your son has AS, changing schools is a big issue for him. He may be stressed

out over the new surroundings and the new teachers. He is not comfortable

because he doesn't know what is expected of him.

We took my son to a psychologist who evaluated him with several different

tests. There was no doubt that he had it. Some with AS, can go through the

regular school and not show all the signs. My son only has rages and

meltdowns at home. I would definitely have him tested if you think there may

be a problem. We knew something just wasn't right with my son. He blurted

out in school. He had a hard time making friends. He is not good in gym and

doesn't want to play sports. The biggest reason I felt he had it is because

his conversations do not go smoothly. He likes to talk about things he likes

and if you change the subject he has a hard time changing to something that

doesn't interest him personally. My son's IQ tested in the superior range.

He is extremely bright which can also be a sign of high functioning autism

or asperger's. There are different levels of asperger's. Not any two kids

are the same.

Does your son have many friends? How are his social skills?
