Guest guest
Hi, I'm troubled by news in nearby town. A 16 yr-old boy with Aspergers killed his classmate. This is my biggest fear after reading a few books about As. Now, my son is on the long waiting list for testings for PDD/Autism. He is having hard time at kindergadern. After a few incidents, he is more isolated from his peers. More than a month, he did not mention that he played with any other kids in school. Getting help from the school district is a long and painful process. We still haven't had an IEP or any services for him. Since he has started school, he shows more and more autistic signs, and regessing, especially, his emotions. He was a happy boy, we didn't really thought that he had any problem, rather than his speech and a very picky eater. He was bright and friendly, the best big brother anyone would wish have. How could a little boy like to greeting to everyone he saw have social problems? I feel like I'm loosing a bit of of him everyday. I am having time to accept all these. Why him? It broke my heart when he made me promise that all his fears would be gone when he got up in the next morning. I really don't know how to help him feel a little safer in school. Guest guest
I was told by the diagnostic doc that dx'd my daughter aspergers that she would " be a handful " during puberty and she has shown some aggression (mild) but lots of mood swings and attitude. There are meds that can help with that. SHE can't take anything due to seizure activity, but thereare meds if it gets to be a prob. I think what you read is a very rare incident. Most aspies are just happy to be alone or back off during confrontation, that I know of. TEACCH and OASIS may have answers and Tony Atwood's book " Why Does do that? " Is a great resource. it's not expensive and you can find it on amazon. It explains SO many behaviors in laymens language and it makes sense! I love the book and refer to it often. In the meantime, your child is young and you need to write requests (keep copies) for testing, get it out of school if insurance will cover it, I did but my kids have SSI Medicaid which helps a lot. I home school my daughter, my youngest with PDD-NOS goes to school for now. Keep pushing for help for your child. OT, Neurocognitive testing, speech/language evals are indeed important. If you have a TEACCH center nearby, ask for counseling, it is free. You're doing what you can, I just suggest keeping a paper trail (letters, not phone calls and keep copies!) and outside intervention as much as possible. An educational psych can also dx autism. Keep that in mind. Prayers and best wishes, > > Hi, I'm troubled by news in nearby town. A 16 yr-old boy with > Aspergers killed his classmate.
