Guest guest
<< I always feel like I am torturing him! >> I was shaving Mav's head a couple of weeks ago. We live right across from the school. It was just as all the teachers were going home. Maverick was screaming.... " Somebody help me PLEEEEZE!!! " . Now usually he is difficult to understand, but THIS came through LOUD and CLEAR!!! Actually, when I want it styled, he does better going to barbershops and telling them to cut it like the Backstreet boys... other than a million warnings for them to " Don't cut off my ears!! " , he is better than for me. This has just been in the last year, tho. Other than that, we've tried it all, the barbershop where he sits in a jeep, blows bubbles and watches videos, the highchair in front of the barney show with a can of pepsi...you name it, we've used it and I can honestly say that nothing worked for him!! LOL.
Guest guest
was this way too...so hard to take him for a haircut. We finally found a place called cartoon cuts, where they had a t.v. and they played Barney while he got his haircut, but even that sometimes didn't work and then the place closed. I ended up investing in Wahl clippers and have given him hair cuts at home for the last 3 years. I used to put him in front of the t.v., but he has gotten MUCH more cooperative and now I can take him up into the bathroom for a haircut (a lot easier to clean up there!). It really isn't hard, I use the clippers all around the back, to just above his ears, then trim the bangs, I guess it is the " mushroom " cut. It looks good on him. It certainly has saved some $$ since he needs a haircut about once a month. It does get better! Mom to (6, ds) and Grace (3) > Hi everyone! I have a problem with my son who has ds and is 2 1/2. He > cannot stand anyone to touch his hair for a haircut! He goes nuts and screams > and hollers when the hairdresser gets near him. My husband and I have also > tried, but he still screams and cries......does anyone have any suggestions? > we have tried giving him crackers, books, musical toys, whatever, to distract > him, but nothing works......... > > Debbie >
Guest guest
ALec used to hate haircuts too. We had a wonderful woman who would just cut his hair while he kicked, screamed and yelled. I would basically hold him down, while she cut. We had tried everything under the sun. 3 years ago, his dad started taking him to the barbershop with him. They get haircuts the same time. He does fine now and does not fuss at all. I never thought that I would see that day. Lori mom to Alec (8DS) and le (12)
Guest guest
When it comes to haircuts, does really well...now. We started out sitting him in the barber chair and just putting the cape on. He was really defensive and got upset, but we just praised him and took him down. (I must say that I am lucky because the " Great Clips " by us has a girl who really thinks is a doll and was willing to do this) Anyway, this place is by my grocery store and every time I thought of it when I was at the store, we would go by and do this. Eventually we would put the cape on and comb his hair. Each time we would push a little beyond his limit, but not so far that he freaked out. (This is how we have done a lot of things like feeding and working on therapy goals). Within a month or two, she was actually doing a few cuts, and after several months, he has NO problems at all with it. (except for when she uses the clippers around the bottom, but he doesn't cry, just growls...heehee) He needs his hair cut about every 3-4 weeks so he is a pro. The only problem now, is when Sheri was on maternity leave, he didn't want to go to someone else, so we kind of backslid a bit, but now she is back and he does great. He also gets a sucker when she is finished, so that doesn't hurt either. =) Kym...mom to 4 including (3 1/2 ds) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Guest guest
There have only been a few times when resisted a haircut. For the past year, he has been a regular with a particular stylist. When I took him there, there was a sign stating only those receiving services could go beyond where the wait area is. I took that literally and let him go without me right there with him. Now he goes and waits for the stylist to come and get him and off he goes. He does look at me a few times. He giggles alot during the haircut. Guest guest
has never been to a barbershop. I have had a lot of experience cutting hair. When he was small he would suddenly turn his head and we were afraid of him getting poked with pointed scissors so we bought some good, sharp rounded end ones, and they worked well for a long time. Along with clippers, of course. Now there is no problem but we are used to it so I continue to cut his hair and trim his beard. Oh, yes, he has a beard and mustache, has had for years. It beats shaving every day and looks good on him. Jessie

I invite his favorite aunt or Grandma over and then pull out the clippers and let them go at it.( I have found not to let Grandma do around the ears, she is lousy at it.) and then after he jumps into the shower we go and get an ice cream sundae. Guest guest
I'm just not sure who needs the valium more--Mac or me or the hairdresser--the hairdresser and I are still stressed out and Mac is already back to his usual happy go lucky self!! I don't want to go to Barber School. My dad buzzed him a couple of times last year, the first time Mac was fine (I think he was terrified), but after that he turned into his usual monster self. After that we decided to back to the hairdresser, since my dad hasn't been to Barber School either, we needed to take him somewhere where he'd look at least 1/2 way decent--his hair grows very fast and pretty much has a mind of it's own!!! Guest guest
I knew you were joking Elaine--but believe me my family has definitely asked ourselves many a time " why can't one of us figure out how to cut a little boys hair decent? " We went over to my sister's this evening with our clipper kit--he sat on her kitchen table with his feet placed on the chair and he did not scream or squirm while she tried to trim up the uneven edges and straggling hairs. He did say " no " several times, but it was a major difference between this afternoon at the hairdressers and tonight at my sisters. He did go into a major fit when we took out the clippers to try and shave his neck. By sister and I held him and tried to calm him and my BIL shaved him. He still doesn't look great, but it's better than it was. I forgot to mention the reason I've been upset about this especially today is because tomorrow he is getting his picture taken. He was asked to be in a Ds Calendar that is put out by a regional Ds Support Group here. It's my understanding that this is a pretty big deal and the calendar this year is going to be available in and Noble and places like that across the country. We'll see if that really pans out. The woman who takes the pictures has taken Mac's several times...she does beautiful pictures and specializes in kids with disabilities. Needless to say, I wanted his hair to look nice for these pictures. Jill RE: Haircuts > > > > > > > > > > Why would I be joking? Perhaps it's another sedative... I've tried everything too. Videos, going to a kids place, and nothing seemed to work. This last time my sister-in-law and nephew took him. He did a lot better. She's been pretty good ever since, i think she was about 6 at that time, don't ask me why but some kids can really play it up when moms around and not even think about it when she's not. Guest guest
how old is mac? i hate to be the bearer of bad news but christopher (7 1/2) is STILL horrible - he screams the whole time - and kicks and grabs. i threaten and bribe and tell him to stop it in my harshest voice - all to no avail. we just get in (i hold his arms and head in position) and get out as fast as possible. i think it IS sensory - he just hates it and it drives him NUTS. wish i could tell you something that works - i am still waiting for it to " pass " . karen in dallas Haircuts I know we've been through this thread before, but haircuts have not gotten any easier for Mac. Some visits to the hairdresser are better than others, but none are great and none are easy. We go to the same hairdresser everytime. He goes with me everytime I get my hair cut--whether or not he's getting his done. We've tried bribery, we've tried giving him the " rewards " during the haircut, we've quit and rested and tried again, we've brought books, videos, toys, every imaginable distracter, we've taken him at the same time his cousins (4 and 5 yrs. old) go...I don't know what else to do. I thought by now he'd be fine---geez...he's been getting his haircut every 5-6 weeks for the past three years. We just got back from a doozy of an appointment. Kit went first and he " oohhed and aaahhed " at her getting her haircut and being such a good girl. As soon as it was his turn he turned into Dr. Jekyl--screaming and squirming. He has very few tears, if any, just major screaming and squirming. I have him held in every imaginable place and position. It takes about 30 minutes to just get a very shaky trim. He's miserable. As soon--I mean IMMEDIATELY--as his feet hit the floor he's happy, signs thank you and candy (hoping for another sucker) and then walks to the door to leave. He's fine, hugs and kisses the hairdresser, talks to us...so I don't think he's in any main or discomfort sensory wise from the haircut. He allows me to wash and blow dry his hair without any fuss. I have on occasion given it a couple of snips here and there...he says " no " , but still allows me to do it. I think it's just a really bad behavior and I don't know what to do to stop it--if he gets much bigger and/or stronger I'm not going to be able to hold him to get his hair done and he NEEDS frequent haircuts. Any and all suggestions, hints, tips are welcome...I need major help with this problem. I've got another appointment already scheduled for next week--maybe if we go more frequently he'll do better.....maybe. Thanks in advance for your help. Guest guest
I wish I had that problem! Ben has no hair at all and every time we go to get 's hair cut he will sit in someone's chair until they pretend to cut his hair. He will even go sit at the shampoo bowl and want to have his hair shampoo'd! The people are always so willing to do his hair and lotion his head! Hopefully someday he will have some hair to cut! M.
