Oh, I didn't say he LET us shave him. It's just the best way to make it look

EVEN....with all the thrashing around.

Actually, we have had some luck at the barbershop when he wanted to look like

the Backstreet boys... but it's hit and miss.

Another thing about haircuts. Mav screams about us NOT CUTTING HIS EARS OFF.

AND he is VERY sensitive about the shaver getting to the area behind his

ears telling us that it hurts. I'm not sure if this is an issue because of

his tubes, ears, SI issues, or just MAV.

Every night when he gets in the tub he said.... " No hair tonight! " . We now

are down to washing hair every other night.....(since it's so short). ....and

he barely lets me suds it up. Now he, at 11, is able to do it himself

satisfactorily, but what a struggle it was before!

Any and all suggestions, hints, tips

are welcome...I need major help with this problem. I've got another

appointment already scheduled for next week--maybe if we go more frequently

he'll do better.....maybe.

Thanks in advance for your help.

has not had this problem in years. I don't know when things changed

but he still complains about it but sits there and allows the (usually)

pretty girl to cut his hair. He then tells everyone in town who will listen

that he has a great carecut. That's how he says it.

I agree with Kim here. You can't let the kid look like Rip Van Winkle. Of

course you could all just go to Barber's School. lol

How about one of those Flobee things that uses the vacuum?

Re: Haircuts

I'm just not sure who needs the valium more--Mac or me or the

hairdresser--the hairdresser and I are still stressed out and Mac is already

back to his usual happy go lucky self!! I don't want to go to Barber

School. My dad buzzed him a couple of times last year, the first time Mac

was fine (I think he was terrified), but after that he turned into his usual

monster self. After that we decided to back to the hairdresser, since my

dad hasn't been to Barber School either, we needed to take him somewhere

where he'd look at least 1/2 way decent--his hair grows very fast and pretty

much has a mind of it's own!!!

Ok here some hints from a mom with a child with ds and a hairdresser! First

you promise a treat , a favorite one , icecream or a chocolate bar works for

my daughter!_LOL-- we have tried everything here too, try a candy bar,, try a

haircut at home while your child is watching his favorite video? Try mommy

holding child on lap? Try right after naptime only ,, not after a long day at

the doc's. And for those who hate the cape take along a extra shirt and due

without the cape. If the child become too upset or aggitated then remove them

immediately and try again another day,, this is how we build their trust , so

they are not so afraid of these things. Just make sure child is well

rested,, fed, and doing whatever is they like best,, eating, movies, books..

Try them something is bound to work.. Goodluck and if I can help in anyway

write anytime,,,,,, nettie619

LOL....we used to give Mav haircuts in his HIGHCHAIR......in front of the TV

with a BARNEY VIDEO and a CAN OF PEPSI!! And he STILL screamed!

Then, they opened up a new shop....the chairs were powerwheels jeeps, with

videos..and blew bubbles for him the whole time. I still had to hold

him down, and the poor hair dresser was shaking so badly afraid she was going

to CUT him, that I had to tip her more than the haircut cost!

THAT is when I said I'd do it at home from then on. Actually, I do all my

kids AND my husbands hair cuts so you'd THINK he'd just feel like one of the

rest of the kids....but NO LUCK!!

I have always cut 's hair, he's never been to anyone else. But

then I cut my husband's too and my own quite abit. And have done other

people's. never made a fuss about it when he was little but wouldn't

sit still so we got some good blunt scissors so he wouldn't get poked and

then gradually introduced the clippers. I have tried in recent years to talk

him into going to my hairdresser but he doesn't want to, he likes the way I

do it.

I wonder too if in some cases it isn't playing it up for Mom. I kept

a friend's little boy for an afternoon one time and he was not trouble at

all, till his mother showed up. Then he fussed and whined and carried on,

was a different kid. I'm sure we've all seen that.

Jill, maybe Mac is trying to let you know he wants long hair. No, but

seriously, why not try and trim it yourself once a week and see how that go.

Good luck. Sorry I can't be more help.

I meant for this to go to the list .......

I don't have any good suggestions either .... has the same issues as the

rest of you ... moving around, screaming, putting his fingers up near his head,

etc. He is getting too strong to hold down if I take him to the barbers and

besides I get very stressed. I have tried most of the things all of you have,

but can't find anything that will work. I have resorted to cutting it myself

when he is asleep. Yes, this IS difficult, but I would rather do it this way,

than poke an eye out, cut a finger off or just be plain stressed out. And, NO

I'm not a barber and never had any training.

I bring Ian to Supercuts and let him choose his own haircut style from the

books they have there. He always wants something cool like the young men

have in the pictures. His hair is so fine, though, that all we can do is

get an approximate, but that's okay. As long as his opinion is sought and

his choice respected, he's fine with whatever the result.

I have been doing some thinking back about 's first haircuts. And of

course I have to remember that she was born with hair that was 2 inches

long. The nurses had so shave some for her IV's, and they hated shaving it

off, so they would do a little at a time. She had an honest-to-goodness

mohawk when she came home from the hospital.

But seriously, I do remember Robin, the stylist that cut 's hair. She

was very nice and patient with . She let touch all of her combs,

brushes, and even scissors, while Robin was holding them. She let

choose the scissors for her to use. When she used the electric clippers on

's neck, it did freak out, so Robin let hold those, turn

them on and then run her finger across the shaving part, so could not

only feel the clippers, but see them against her skin. She still asks to do

that.

It is only recently that has laid down backwards to get her hair

washed without any argument. Now she looks forward to getting her hair cut

and will tell me when she needs one.

Sometimes I take to the Hair Cuttery. He is really good in the chair,

it's getting him there that is a problem. Anyway, the girl who does his hair is

really good with him. The last time she told me that she is the only one there

who will cut a person with DS's hair. She said once a father brought his son in

and his father insisted he get his hair washed. The kid flipped out and damaged

the store. She held her ground and did not stop until she completed the hair

cut.

Hi

ALec was horrible during his haircuts also. I was always amazed how the

person who cut ALec's hair was able to give him a nice haircut. WHen he was

a baby, he screamed so loud that the blood vessels on his face used to pop.

I had to hold him down for the haircuts. After i got a big scratch on my

face and alec was getting bigger, i knew that something had to change. I

think that ALec was 6 at the time.

I had his dad start to take him for haircuts and to use a different place.

This worked!!!! About a year ago,he gave his dad a hard time so they left

the barber shop The next time that they went, his dad told Alec that they

were not leaving until he got a haircut. He fused, but finally got the

haircut. The next time, he was fine again....

Alec is still HORRIBLE at drs. He is fine if they don;t have to touch him.

Oh, we are so blessed! This is one problem that has subsided for us.

Danny--just turned 11--screamed and wrestled for years. In the last

year or two, he has gotten much better, just as long as we take him to a

shop with cartoon videos. He still protests a little over shampoos and

sometimes giggles like he's being tickled, but at least he doesn't have

to be restrained.

When Nikki goes to dr. and he checks her ears, she also cries so hard her

vessels pop on her face. Do, they get over this, or is it something that

will always happen? It looks terrible when Nikki gets this. And people or my

family will ask if she has a rash or something.

Joyce,

My Heidi and Corrie still get this (sm. broken blood vessels on the face),

but now it's usually from throwing up. In fact, Corrie is just getting rid of

some now! She got sick while we were at family camp. :-(

Hi Joyce, my son is 10 years old, we just went to the

dentist to get his teeth cleaned - you would have

thought they were pulling out nose hairs......I know

he wasn't in pain cause he has a high tolerance for

it, he was just plan mad! - and when we were all done

- his face was full of busted blood vessels!!! also,

as a side note, when he has a high fever, I always

know that the fever has broken when I see those same

broken blood vessels all over his face - when he was a

baby and until 2 years old or so, he would get them on

his torso....now they are just on his face...yep, I

would get the same comments.... " rash? " " is he ok? " -

and my all time " eye roller " from my ex mom in law -

" does he have the measles????? " LOL - anyway, we are

only 10 years old, so no telling if they EVER outgrow

it...?

Hi ,

Wow, I'm surprised at this question. My son just turned 10 last week but I

can count his haircuts on one hand! He is growing his hair out for the third

time to donate it to kids with cancer. I always thought this was a really nice

and thoughtful thing for him to do. He gets teased by the other kids though,

cries about the teasing, but still will not cut his hair.

The thing is, when his ocd symptoms started last Nov, we ended up taking him

to a psychiatrist that dealt with only ocd. She saw his long hair (I explained

how he donates it) and she goes on to tell me that it's part of the OCD! I

never did believe it. But now you have me thinking. Could this be an ocd

symptom?

My daughter, 14, has major issues with getting her hair cut. It causes her

major anxiety and we can only get it cut when she is absolutely ready to do it.

She usually has issues about it after it is cut, for a few weeks, as well.

is fine with haircuts. is now into what he calls

the " skaterboy look " and won't brush his hair but will get it cut

when it's too long (over his eyes, sigh). My oldest keeps his cut

close to his head always and hates it to get long (cowlicks!). But

they are not eager to try any new haircuts/styles so far as cutting

it " into a style. "

Now if we go way back to when the twins were preschool age, there was

a problem....
