My sons PCP agreed with her and he is set to see this Neurologist in late Feb. I have never heard of such a thing in all my reading and the Dr's have been very vage by saying they just want to rule other ND's out. I was wonding if anyone else had heard of this? Guest guest
Well, I am not sure if it means anything...but, my Dr. said that there might be a link between autism and cafe au lait spots (at least that is what he heard from another doctor). I had never heard of it before...but my son (who has autism/AS) has the spots...luckily it turned out to be nothing. If I am not mistaken cafe au lait spots can be signs of a disease called neurofibromitosis. Meredith My son is 8 DX with AS last year. He is now being refered to a > Neurologist. Guest guest
We heard about the link to neurofibromitosis. One of my friends brought that up in the hospital when I had her, and freaked me out. The doctors assured me that that is not a concern because she only has one. They call it cafe au lait spot for her just because of the color. They did tell us that we have to keep an eye on it because when hormones start it could grow or become hairy. I pray that doesn't happen, but it will be what it will be! Keep us updated in what you learn, because it makes me very curious of course, since she has one! Thanks! Many Blessings! meredithzirkel <meredithzirkel@...> wrote: Well, I am not sure if it means anything...but, my Dr. said that there might be a link between autism and cafe au lait spots (at least that is what he heard from another doctor). Guest guest
No one has ever given his Birthmark a name, other then an Angle kiss or a stork bite. Its about the size of a lima bean above his right eye on the outside of his eye brow so it grows hair and has to be trimed but it blends in to his brow so the hair is not noticeable. Its light pink and fades to light brown in the middle and a little rased. He is always getting asked what happened to his eye, if he got hit or something. I know its not a wine stain birthmark sound more like the cafe au lait spot like , you talked about. I will update you when we do see the Neurologist. Guest guest
My daughter with autism has 2 strawberry birthmarks (one on her scalp and one on her lip). They were large when she was an infant but are smaller now. They showed up when she was about 2 weeks old. She was born at 36 weeks. My son has one on the inside of his eyelid. It grew enough to cause some vision problems but then started to reduce in size at 1 year old. His vision is normal again. He has Regulatory Dysfunction and was also born at 36 weeks. I had heard that minor birth marks are linked to autism but these were not obvious at birth but may have already started growing. I had read that these were blood vessels that normally disappear by birth, but sometimes do not go away. They do not connect to the heart but do have small amounts of blood in them. Guest guest
My son has a large cafe au lait birthmark on his chest. At his very first Developmental Pediatrician appt she asked if he had any birth marks. She measured the birthmark and also told me that there is another neurological disorder that coinsides with those types of birth mark. But there has to be a lot of them and they have to be of certain size. She did recommend that I keep an eye on it and let her know if I grows significantly. It has not in 5 years. Guest guest
I have never heard of this type of birthmark relating to autism., But, someone that had a down child told me at a genetic counseling meeting, said: that if you look at the palm of your hand and have a " straight line " in the palm of your hand that goes straight across. (from one end to the other, in the middle) that is the sign for Down syndrome. or carrier??? With that, I wonder if there is any connection with the birthmark to autism?? however, my AS son had no birthmarks at birth, my NT daughter had a tiny one on her forehead. Hummm All this makes me wonder if this is just a " myth. " when you do see a down syndrome person without the line, and an NT child with the birthmark??? How would that connect to the DX??? but don't go by my opinion, I'm not a professional, and I just heard of " the line and birthmark " just makes me wonder what it means when a person has the mark without a DX or if a person Has the DX and not the birthmark, what does that mean?....But I do get it when they say this is all like a puzzle. Guest guest
I was at an ASCEND AS support group meeting and everyone was saying that a white birth mark is a sign of autism. My son has one on his side. At the time things were new and I was still hoping an AS diagnosis was not true. When I heard everyone saying that their child had this type of birthmark the reality hit me like a ton of bricks and I was completely grief stricken. That was 2 years ago and my son has come a long way. I am not so doom and gloom anymore, although I have my moments when I am sad for what could have been. Its really a battle but these kids are very special and we just have to love them for who they are. Debbie
Guest guest
I've been following these posts & find the birthmark/autism relationship really interesting. My AS son had a very light pink " stork bite " on the back of his neck, which has now grown into his scalp & covered by hair. Does anyone have a medical article that proves this idea, or is it something that parents of ASD kids are finding on their own? I know of many NT people who have birthmarks too. So I'm a little confused. Liz Houston debramelamed <melamedj@...> wrote: I was at an ASCEND AS support group meeting and everyone was saying that a white birth mark is a sign of autism. Guest guest
My son has three or four of them. Do you have any idea what kind of disorder it is? Is it related to As? Guest guest
My sister in law has neurofibromitosis, which is awful. Of the 8 grandchildren, 5 of them have cafe au lait spots (including our AS son). 2 live out of state & are older,so I have never had to see them in the buff (just a few fewer diaper changes!) Only 1 has a spectrum issue, and none have (thank god) shown any sign of the NF. This causes tumors to grow on your nerves. Many of my sister-in-law's are visible like grape sized bumps all over her body. Unfortunately she now has them in her brain and on her spine. In the grand scheme of things, we all have it easy if we are not living with this illness! Blind in one eye, deaf in one ear, survived breast and ovarian cancer, and now the brain and spine cancers. (All NF tumors are not cancerous, but it takes a keen eye and lots of follow up to KNOW that they are not. It is easy to ignore them if they are everywhere.) No to mention the abuse that was heaped on her as a child, and still today by people of all ages. (She is 50) We had our kids checked out for it, since her sibs would be carriers, but if you don't see it by the time they are 3 or 4, you are really in the clear. She had evident it since birth. Hope this is a helpful explaination of the disease. My son is 8 DX with AS > last year. He is now being refered to a > > Neurologist.
