Hi I'm looking into using Social Stories for my 3 year old son and my

7 year girl. I checked out the Carlo Gray web site. But money is very

tight around here. So I was wanting to know if anyone had some info

they were done with and would not mind passing it along. Or passing on

more information about Social Stories. My resources are hard to come

by here or at least hard to find. (small twin in West TX)I called the

library and the only copying they had, had been checked out and never

returned so they can't help at this time.

Hi, at my son's school they are making up their own social stories for my son.

We are starting to create one at home as well. We take an incident, write about

it and illustrate it and write out an appropriate way to end the story. This

way my son learns to respond in a certain way - eventually, an automatic

response we hope. In addition, the school also made an emotion's chart for my

son. There is an arrow across the page with the numbers 1 - 10. Mathew decided

with an adult, what the 1 would represent, what the 2....all the way to ten.

For one chart, it is his mood. He has cutouts of faces, some happy, some mad,

some sad, etc.... and he puts the face on the number describing the extent of

the emotion (there are bits of velcro on the arrow and on the faces). In this

way, we are teaching Mathew to recognize different emotions and levels he is

feeling.

This is a personalized, cheap and effective way to introduce kids to emotions.

My son is 13, by the way.... your children are much younger and would benefit

from this type of learning so much younger.

My daughter's OT makes up social stories. Do you have access to an OT?

You don't need to buy her book at all. I don't have it. I went to a conference

to hear her speak once but it wasn't anything great. The basic idea is to write

a short and simple story to illustrate a happening. I wrote one a few weeks

ago for a 5 yo and it was " P says 'hi' and 'bye' " as the title. The whole story

was something like this:

P comes home from school. Grandma is waiting to meet him. P says, " Hi

Grandma! "

Daddy comes home from work. P says, " Hi Daddy! "

It is time for Grandma to go home. P says, " Bye bye Grandma! "

Rose comes over to play with P. P says, " hi Rose! "

and it goes on from there, saying " hi " and " bye " to various people in his daily

life. The purpose of the story was to encourage him to say " hi " and " bye " by

using people's names. This meant he actually has to look at people when saying

it and not just wave hi in any direction, which he was prone to do. It actually

did help a lot really.

I wrote another one after that about his birthday. He was turning 5 and so I

wrote a social story about it. I am working on a potty training one right now

for him.

What I do is write the simple story. You shouldn't use negatives in the story

such as saying, " Don't ever scream in the store. " Instead you would say, " We

are quiet when in the store. " And then you just go through the situation

describing what is happening so the child knows what to expect and/or how to act

in a specific situation. I print mine up on the computer. You can use

" postcard " paper or use regular card stock paper and print four sections per

page. Then I cut or tear them apart into fours and they fit perfectly into

those little plastic photo brag books that are $2 at Walmart or Target. You

just slide them in and instant book.

Oh, I also add photo's and clip art for each page. Some kids really like the

visual aspect and they also like paying attention to the story more if they see

themselves in the story. So I use a lot of photo's when possible.
