Guest guest
My son, who was tentatively diagnosed with Aspergers at age 9, is now fourteen. I was told by a new school psychologist at his latest IEP meeting that he does not meet the criteria for autism or Autism spectrum disorders, and he believes Sam may have Right Hemisphere Learning Disability. We're going to get him re-evaluated by a very reputable child psychiatrist, but I'd like to find some online support for this disorder. It does have some similarities to Aspergers, but also involves some minor to moderate physical disabilities too. Sam has a noticable weakness on the left side of his body, lists to the left when when he walks or runs, and is hypertonic, especially on that side. He also has a slight left sided facial droop and his tongue and lips are somewhat immobile on that side. Ironically, it was the speech pathologist he works with that noticed the physical aspects and recommended to the school psychologist that my son be re-evaluated. He has word retrieval difficulties, tactile sensitivity, verbal emotional context problems, and no musical comprehension, and it's true that he doesn't display the full range of Asperger's traits. After looking up NVLD, he fits the picture almost perfectly. Why does it take so long for all these " experts " to Rx a kid? My son has needed physical therapy and a few other things he hasn't been getting, although over all, because there are some similarities to Aspergers, he has made very good progress in some ways over the last 5 years. Call me once again not impressed with experts. *sigh* I've been telling them all for 5 years that Sam doesn't seem very typically Aspergers in some important ways.
