Guest guest
This is my first time posting even though I have been following other families for a little while now. My daughter was hospitalized 2weeks ago for depression with ideas of self harm and suicide. She was diagnosed with AS in the fall of 2005. She is currently in her first year of high school in NYC and she knows the AS is " getting in the way of her being normal " (socially) Are there other families in NYC with adolescent AS kids? I'm also looking for a new school; her current school is great academically, but lacks all the services she needs. Thanks so much.
Guest guest
I am responding as a mom. Trust your instinct. " Normal " - is a word used by the people who don't understand and cannot relate to anything out of the standard realm of expectations. I hope that you are able to find support and resources for you and your daughter that raise her up to find her place. For my daughter, it was Key Club, for others it is chess, or sports, or science. In high school, many of the relationships are superficial and revolve around interests. Does your daughter have a special hobby or interest? Have a good day. Guest guest
Hi we are from PA. I have a 14 yr old grandson who I am raising. He is Asperger/Bipolar & has been hospitalized a few times. He knows about his Dx's & deals with it though counseling & talking about it. Does your daughter have an IEP in her school? Take care,Betty manga3nyc <manga3nyc@...> wrote: This is my first time posting even though I have been following other families for a little while now. Guest guest
Thank you! I am not an AS expert but I have always been perceived as " different " and I tell her that normal is not an absolute term and that if you look around everyone has issues.I am grateful that other parents know what I'm feeling because sometimes the ones closest to you don't even get it. That's how my daughter feels about her aunts. > > I am responding as a mom. Trust your instinct. Guest guest
-She actually does have an IEP but I've had little success in getting it implemented. She's in a small HS that's so academically focused they forget these kids are just that..kids. They only worry about whether she's turning in her lab reports and projects. Unfortunately, it took a hospitalization and failing classes for the teachers to finally understand that she needs more support than she's been getting. Thank you Betty -- In , Jewel <truegrittle@...> wrote: > > Hi we are from PA. I have a 14 yr old grandson who I am raising. He is Asperger/Bipolar & has been hospitalized a few times. Guest guest
What is normal anyway? Some times people think everyone should be like them. It would be a very boring world if everyone was the same. Take care,Betty manga3nyc <manga3nyc@...> wrote: Thank you!
