Well, n has missed 48 days of school and the headmistress has just called.

We officially withdrew him today. They are actually going to let us out of our

contract for him for the rest of the year.. I am happily surprised they are

letting us out of our contract.

I am pulling my seven yo out next year. I am hoping to finish the year

but am not sure we'll even get that far. They keep promising action

(they don;'t follow his IEP, give him work way above his ability right

now, he just isn't learning)

Good luck with your efforts and look into Oak Meadow if you want a

curriculum (not expensive and very flexible) or the Charlotte Mason

Method (really good for spec needs kids but VERY hands on and time

consuming....a way of life more than schooling), we use it for my 12 yo

asperger child and love it...going to continue that for her next year

and order OAK MEADOW for my son (he's more in line and not so scattered

academically, just two years behind, yeah...the school is doing great

with him!)...

Public school is so much fun to deal with. When we first moved here 3

yrs ago, it took them over a week (almost 2) just to place my son,

. I spoke with them about his meltdowns in gym and sent a

doctor's statement excusing him from gym and they agreed not to put him

in gym. Then they said he had to go to the gym but did not have to

participate. Guess what? One day there was a sub who let play

and whammo! Kids were scared and hurt and we were called and the

police was called and then parents were threatening the principal about

lawsuits etc. Well then we had to go to a hearing to see if

could return to school. In the meantime he was on home instruction.

Finally they placed him at a really great county school where the

instructors knew how to work with AS kids.

The following school year, our town no longer contracted with that

school. Home instruction again while they made promises to find the

right place for him. After almost 3 months of the run-around, I

finally played my card explaining how I knew that if they couldn't meet

his needs that were required to send him to a district that could. All

of sudden they had a school for him. Huge Mistake! It was an

alternative learning center (with kids from juvenile hall etc). He ran

away 2 or 3 times from school. Then finally a new curriculum

specialist (who is amazing-love her) found a great school for him. He

has so many support systems in place there. Mental health techs,

speech therapists, circle-of-friends, paraprofessionals, " safe-places " ,

Autism organizations that meet with our IEP team monthly to discuss and

implement useful strategies/resources. It has been a great year!

Next year we get to start all over as he enters high school and 9th

grade. Aaaaaaaaargh! I am actually considering an online charter

school. We'll see. I would like to hope I can find a similar setup to

what he has now, but from what I have heard my options are limited and

I have just soooo many horror stories from dealing with public school

systems both here in Ohio and in Texas. For now, I am trying not to

dwell on it and enjoy his success in school while it lasts. :)

I wish I could homeschool him. He is going to get his GED instead. His

intelligence is far greater than mine. I couldn't get the boys to sit down

and do homework after being in school all day so I know I couldn't

homeschool them. But I really appreciate the info.

I wish you all the success in homeschooling your kids. I wish I had known

their diagnosis years ago so we could have gotten some help along the way,

but we didn't find out until they were 16 that they had aspergers and all

the abcs that go with it. I guess it is as it is meant to be... and things

WILL work out for us , we just aren't going to go about things in the

traditional way. I'm glad I can finally accept that, it is hard realizing

your kids aren't going to finish high school, go to the prom etc. Toni
