123 Magic - what's your opinion?

We did years ago. It was better than nothing but our needs with OCD and

aggression were so much more than it could deal with. We need our own

mini-functional behavioral analysis before we could really get a 1-2-3- Magic

idea to work. I hope that makes sense....

( ) 123 Magic - what's your opinion?

I was told by my sons social skills therapist that the 123 Magic

program might work well for us. Has anyone tried it? With good

results?

Thanks,

Liz

I have to remember, it has been a while, but was that the book that

has you count down?

If so, I found myself counting to two constantly and having to do it

frequently through out the day. I have more luck with 1 warning, 2nd

time is a consequence. But that was just me. I have heard many

people love the book ;-)

We were also told to use 123 Magic, we have watch the DVD and read

the book. When I count one, my son says 2,3,4...and laughs. He is

4 and is in the process of being tested for AS. Our

neuropsychologist told us that the whole 123 Magic program probably

wouldn't work for us, but parts of it would. He told us to try it

and note what works. He said it would be a process. So we are

trying.

Sorry if this doesn't help too much, but I wanted to let you know

that it may work for you but don't get discouraged if you have to

play around with it.

It worked really well for my now 16 year old son. He was very rule bound so

we sat him down, explained how it worked and it was an effective means of

" discipline " until he was about 11 years old. We started it at age 4. Pam :)

Thank you for sharing your scarey experience (I am glad she is

ok!)...Lily has a history of seizures tho, just not since she was 18

mos old. I think the febrile seizure post (THANK YOU!) hit it on th

ehead...it's temp changes that seem to set her off.

I'm not sure I'll want meds if we can avoid it, we'll just work at

keeping the bathroom at an even temp (I use a portable heater on low

right now and no seizures so far!)

Are there any websites for this program? I have never heard of it and am very

interested in any new techniques as I feel I have exhausted them all!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!

Before we even had any diagnosis for Arie except for Tourette's, we

used 1-2-3 Magic.

It was not magic by any means, but it provided a very clear, firm

behavioral structure which Arie responded to (and still responds to)

very well.

The first few weeks, he was getting counted and sent off to time outs

sometimes 7-8 times a day. Now (and I also feel I should make clear he

also got some medication [clonidine] between then and now), he stops

the behavior at 1 or 2 most times, and only on really bad days does

he get the time out at all.

I also really liked _How To Talk So Children Will Listen and Listen So

Children Will Talk._ I used a combination of these two approaches

(modified, of course, for Arie's autism) and felt they made an

enormous difference.

The 1-2-3 magic had much more clear and palpable results more quickly, though.
