Hi, I have had different experiences with scout camp with my son. We

were in one troop where the scoutmaster was very unhelpful and

actually scared of my son. My son was 13 at the time. The

scoutmaster kicked him out of summer camp because my son got mad and

the leader that was supposed to be working with my son was not at

the campsite. None of the boys were scared of him, just the

scoutmaster. I offered to go to camp with him, but that particular

troop did not appreciate the involvement of mothers at campouts. We

are now in a troop that is very supportive and accepting. Parents

(even mothers) are allowed and encouraged to go on campouts. They

would like for the parent to be a registered leader, but it is not

written in stone. We help with all the boys, not just our own. My

husband and I are both registered leaders. Becoming one is just a

matter of filling out an adult application and paying the fee. If

this scoutmaster isn't being very supportive, I would sit down and

talk with him to find out why. I have even went so far as to do a

camp " IEP " with the leaders so they know how to handle certain

situations. Scouts should be fun, learning, and work thrown all

together. That's my two-cents-worth, hope it helps.
