AMEN LIZ!! My friend actually runs a autism -service dogs group! She also

is training her dog FRISCO for a future placement.. Can I give you her

website ? Its friscos journal and she updates it regularly.. It might be a

great way for your child to follow that to! My son Chase loves it!

And on another note (this might not apply in this situation) Just

because one medication has worked for many years, doesn't mean it will

continue to work well. My son has been on Adderall for six years. All

of a sudden, it has been giving him out and out panic attacks. He can't

even take a tiny dose of it now. He takes Strattera and Wellbutrin now,

to good effect. He de-stresses by lying down with the dog and

meditating.

I am a firm believer of pet therapy with AS kids. At least every other

day, tells me, " Mom, Sophie (the dog) helps me so much. She's

taught me empathy, she's taught me to care about other creatures,

etc... " She's 11 years old now, but still going strong. She sleeps on

his bed every night. There's something soothing about cuddling up to

her furry self and listening to her heart beat.

Can the service dogs actually accompany the child to class, or is that just for

at home use? My DD used to take small stuffed animals with her to class to get

through the day.

I think they can, although it may depend on the school. A child at my

son's school has a service dog, and the dog stays with the OT until the

child needs it. But at other schools, the dog stays with the child all

the time. I think it just depends.

Sophie isn't a service dog. just hangs out with her at home.

For those of you who have kids who love animals and are excellent

readers (high school), 's reading a wonderful book called " Next

of Kin " by Fouts. It's about the chimps Washoe and Lucy, and the

attempts to teach them sign language. Some of it is very funny. We got

it for 38 cents from one of the Amazon affiliates (plus $5 to have it

shipped in 2 days). This has been great for , as he is taking

sign language at school.

Hope everyone's having a great President's Day!
