She apologizes to people without being prompted. She doesn't understand why she does the things she does. I feel so bad for her sometimes....she loves people and doesn't want to hurt them. She is very empathetic also....feels bad when other kids get yelled at and will often stick up for them. My name is , and I have an 11 yr old son with aspergers. I have been reading posts for several days now, and I just posted a reply to that basically gives the story of our journey thus far. I have two questions for the group: 1. Does anyone have suggestions for how they have gotten their child to wear glasses all day, and not use them as a fiddle toy? We went thru I think 4 pairs of glasses last year alone, and he just got a new pair two weeks ago and he has already bent them completely out of shape twice. They are the flex kind, but they still get bent and break. 2. For those of you with aggressive kids, do they show remorse for their actions afterward, or do they seem oblivious to how their actions affect others? Can aspergers kids learn empathy? It seems that some of these kids have empathy... I really need some guidence on this. Also, to Kate, I have to tell you that I went to your website, and WOW!! it is amazing. Thank you for sharing that with the group. It helped me see that I had (and still have) many aspergers qualities. I could really relate to so much of what you said. Thanks in advance for any answers you all might share with me, and I look forward to learning from this group. Atlanta, GA Be a PS3 game guru. Guest guest
My 5 year old gets aggressive but does not really hurt anyone. She usually is upset because I am upset. I don't know if she is crying because she hurt someone or she got in trouble. But once I say that I or someone else is hurt she says sorry and tries to help. I think this is learned behavior, but soon will be more automatic. Guest guest
I don't know exactly how to get him to wear his glasses. I worried about the same problem for my now 18 yo ds. I think he was about 10 when he got his glasses. We told him he would be able to see much better with them, and he could, so he was satisfied to wear them! We did go through a few pairs since he sometimes took them off and laid them on the ground or something. We often bought the kids package at Sears or JcPenney's. They repair or replace glasses for kids at a lower fee. Then you don't have to buy a complete new pair. Teaching empathy is something we have done for years now with my 10 yo, HFA. We began by using the book, "Teaching Children With Autism to Mind-Read : A Practical Guide for Teachers and Parents (Paperback) by Howlin " They have wonderful ideas in there to teach kids with autism how to learn about other people and how other people feel. Guest guest
Please read the New Members doc. you were sent when you joined. If you didn’t save it, go to FILES, then New Member doc., then Commonly Asked Questions. You will learn much there. # 19 is Recommended Reading. The taste you are referring to is a symptom of bromide, not too much iodine. Are you taking iodine? If so, please be sure you are also taking the companion nutrients. Again, please go to our FILES and read all you can. Much work has gone into creating the New Member doc., and Commonly asked Questions. After you have read all you can, please feel free to ask questions. Kind regards, Kathleen New member intro & questions I learned about this group on the LDN forum, which I take for CFS. I have been reading over your information in the files and would like some guidance on educating myself further. Maybe a few books that are highly thought of here would be a good place for me to start.I recently had some blood work done and my Dr emailed me the results with some stuff red flagged and I have a appt to see her next week. The things that were flagged had to do with my thyroid , high cholesterol, hormones(I am 65), glucose.....seems I may be pre diabetic.I really dont know enough right now to ask specific questions but if you have suggestions on books or articles or other important test I would appreciate any input so I can arm myself withenough information to know how I want to direct my dr rather than the other way around. The only thing I wanted to mention is a symptom I have which is not really on the list of common CFS symptoms and its been quite bothersome for over a year. I have an extremely horrible metallic taste in my mouth most of the time........kind brassy. I have not really found any information to help me understand what is causing this except I did read an article that said it was a symptom of too much iodine??? Anyone have any ideas about what it might be?
