Guest guest
Hi All. My 1st grade son was recently diagnosed with AS and we are having his ARD on Friday. I would appreciate if you could give me some suggestions on classroom modifications I can expect for this age. I am worried that they are not going to offer any extra help (he already gets modifications for ADHD) as a result of this new AS diagnosis. I would be grateful to hear what therapies/services your AS children recieve from their school. Thanks in advance, Liz
Guest guest
Accommodations and modifications are determined by an assessment of what your son needs. That said, some of the things typically offered are shortened assignments, individual schedule, maybe help remembering what things to take home for homework, etc. Children on the spectrum also frequently get Speech & Occupational therapy. The occupational therapy is for motor skills like handwriting. Where in Texas are you? I may know an advocate in your area that can help. Guest guest
Thanks Tonya. I am in Houston. I really think I would be interested in an advocate at this point. I'm worried my child will get the bare minimum of services without the expert help of an advocate. Currently he gets some OT for fine motor. But my son says he never goes to OT anymore. So I can't say if he's even getting that service. Maybe my son just doesn't realize he is getting OT? I would love it if the would send me a chart showing when & how long he gets the service. He just got the AS dx, so they say he will be getting ST for pragmatic language. Thanks for your help. Guest guest
You are supposed to be informed at each grading period about his progress towards his goals on the IEP. If he has OT goals, then the progress should be sent to you quarterly or as often as NT kids get their grade reports. If you are concerned, I would start writing and asking - ask to speak to the OT about his progress, ask her for her data so you can have a copy for your records, ask her what things she does with him so you can continue working with him at home as well. If she can't answer any of these questions, that's a bad sign. lol. You can also request an IEP meeting to go over his goals and ask them to provide the data that shows he is making sufficient progress. If he is not going to OT, then ask them why not. Be sure and write a follow up letter to any communications you have on this subject! Guest guest
For the Houston area, I’d try: Barbara Sewell (bse2272@... ) She has the Federation of Families Chapter and doesn’t charge Singleton is with FEAT Houston http://www.feathouston.org If she doesn’t do advocacy, she will know who in the area does. Everyone associated with FEAT has a child on the spectrum so they would also be a good learning resource. Barbara Kluchin does advocacy for a fee. I think the first consultation is free though. http://www.AllAboutAchievement.com There is also the Northwest Houston Chapter of the Autism Society of America Northwest Houston Chapter of the ASA PO Box 1363 Cypress, TX 77410 E-mail: NorthwestHoustonChapterASA@... Phone: 281-686-0103 http://www.autism-society.org/chapter1006 Another good resource is . Not only does the website have a lot of resources, they also have an email list that is great! Guest guest
I don't know how legal it is under these conditions, but I do know that many times it is useful to inquire about outside mode of living and behavior of people under observation. It may be helpful in development of a more rounded and complete plan. Guest guest
I agree it's useful to get outside info on a child to help form a diagnosis. But the legal way to do that should be by obtaining written parental permission. See, we weren't going to let our neighbors know about our son receiving any sp ed services. And now a VERY active in the neighborhood type of lady knows my son is receiving sp ed services. I just wish they had asked permission before engaging another parent about our sons behaviors. We would not have given permission in order to protect our sons privacy. <sirdavjohn@...> wrote: I don't know how legal it is under these conditions, but I do know that many times it is useful to inquire about outside mode of living and behavior of people under observation. Guest guest
A request and the courtesy of a simple phone call would have gone a long way in letting you know what is going on, and giving you a voice in what is, and is not, done. Especially when things are done at the whim of a teacher, as they seem to have here. It sounds to me, that there has been a serious breach of etiquette and ethics. Courtesy, etiquette, and ethics are only three of the many things that have gone out the window during the past 20 years or so.
