I'm sure that teacher is grateful to you. She probably has initiated conversation with others in the school and hopefully things will change for the better. As far as Crystal, she can serve as a peer model to the nondisabled students. She may be able to recruit others to do the same. I have found that most teens would get involved if they knew how or was offered that chance to help. TJ and 's friends and even Katey's have been great. While I know some may not like to single out those who befriend their peers with special needs, it can act as a motivator for others to do the same. Katey was in the good friends program last year. There is a new special education teacher at the school who has NOT adopted the program. Katey and her friends are heartbroken about not being able to be peers in this now extinct program. Hummm..maybe I need to write to the principal and encourage him to get this restarted.
Guest guest
I'm not very sympathetic with this teacher. She was given a booklet describing her rights and responsibilities when she enrolled her daughter. She should have read it. You did the right thing, Carolyn. granny --- " For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Guest guest
You certainly did! Sounds like someone at the school doesn't understand the concepts of modification and accommodation for special needs students. Teachers working with a student should know all these things this teacher is in the dark about. Good for you, Carolyn! Guest guest
Jena, I was afraid I had over steped boundies as a parent when giving this teacher this info. I believe from what this teacher said this is the first inclusion student ever to be in this school. BTW how did your visit go with your mother? Guest guest
As a retired Special Ed teacher. the burn out rate is incredible. I taught for 13 years before, I had to get out of teaching. Now I am so glad that I did, having an AS child I am not sure that I would be a very good mom, having to deal all day with specials and then coming home to a special. I do not know that I would have the endurance to do it all. It did give me tons of insight. however I will tell you I was blind to my own child, and his difficulties. The only good thing it did was to let me know that PARENTS HAVE ALL THE RIGHTS!!!! Do not forget that out there. as the parent of a special. you have all the rights and the schools must provide. Do not let them bully you.
