( ) Son with REALLY loud voice...

My 5-year old is on the spectrum, and has been diagnosed with a high-functioning level of Aspergers. He exhibits most of the classic behaviors...but the one that my wife and I would love to manage the most is his volumne control. He doesn't seem to have any sense of how loud you should be talking....and literally 10 seconds after being reminded that he needs to use his indoor voice, the volume is back up again. In some cases, the closer you get to him, to louder he seems to talk. Gadzooks!Any ideas out there?

One of my kids (NT,,,I guess...ha ha),,,is always louder, too. He actually goes to speach 3x/week to work with the lady. I think to remind him of his "tone". It seems to be working..........or maybe it's his age? It's hard to "react to",,,,,,because you don't want to say, "be quiet".......or "keep it down",,,and crush them. He probably needs to be rotely taught when and how to use a loud voice and a quiet voice. Make a game out of it. I also remember whispering to my son when he got loud. It seemed to bring his voice back to a quieter level. Pam :)See what's free at AOL.com.

One thing I just thought of that might work is a "whisper phone". We use them at school for students to read aloud to themselves. They can whisper and hear themselves without distrubing others. You can find them at this website http://www.tenafly.k12.nj.us/~jsmith/whisper%20phones.htm or make your own with two pieces of PVC pipe. Maybe if they talk with this to their mouth and ear they would get the understanding of how loud they talked. I know that I once had a student who screamed alot. We used to put a 2 pound coffee can in front of his face when he screamed so that it echoed back to him. Soon he stopped screaming so loud when he understood how loud it was.

This is a tough one for us too. My 10 yo (hfa) also talks really loudly. I usually cut him off after the first few words and say, "You are yelling at me" or "Talk quietly!" and then he adjusts down the volume. I don't know if he gets it on his own at all. I am just hopinig he eventually starts checking his loudness after being reminded for so long. I also am sure to say it to him in a quiet voice as well.

When he was younger, we did an ABA program. One of the things we did was teach him "loud/quiet" and we went all over the house finding things to make loud noises and then quiet noises. (i.e. bang the pan lids loudly, then quietly and slam the door vs. shut it quietly, etc.) The point was that he understood what loud was in comparison to quiet before telling him, "Be quiet." You might want to teach him what loud and quiet are before you tell him that too - make sure he can hear the difference. Then practice talking in whispers, low voice, med. and then loud.

We always had a hard time teaching "whispering" to my ds. When he whispered, he just made a whisper sound in our ears instead of saying things in an actual whisper. I don't think he heard the words at such a quiet level. Now he is 10 yo and he can whisper.

My 11 year old also has a volume control problem.  I try not to sound punitive or angry when I tell him to lower his volume.   We have to distinguish with him between yelling, screaming, and just being too loud.  If I tell him to stop yelling at me, he gets confused because yelling is a definite sign of meltdown.  Screaming is pain, surprised, or scared.    So if he is just too loud, I have to make it clear that I just can't understand him when he talks that loud.  He was in kindergarten before he could figure out how to whisper at all.   Just couldn't do it! Have you seen an item called a whispy which is put out by Abillitations. It is a half circle pipe that when you put it to your ear and speak in the other end is to help the speaker hear the real volume of their voice.See what's free at AOL.com.
