My ds (15 yo) desperately wants a Nintendo Wii and two of the new games for it.

(His focal

obsession is Kirby, but he also likes several other " child-targetted " video

games.)

Unfortunately, they're simply not available without doing stupid things like

buying them

on eBay. Even the waiting lists are closed. So I don't know what I'm going to

get for him.

My boy is 10 and hasn't played with toys for quite a while now. He has been into

video games (xbox) but I'm going to try to get him a nice chess set with table

and drawers to give him something to do with his dad when his game time is up.

My 17 yo son wants PS 2 games and computer games. Luckily he's pretty

easy-going about what he wants. He'll be perfectly happy with older games that

have dropped in price. My 14 yo daughter, on the other hand, wants an ipod

nano. Yikes!

Oh, how I long for the good ol' days when she was content with fake Barbie

dolls from the dollar store...<g>

This is the first Christmas where we're in the position, financially, to

actually get something like that, but I think I'm gonna have to set up some

ground rules with her on it first. Like she can't take it to school with her.

I'm not sure what the power source is, but if it's batteries, she'll have to do

chores to earn money to replace them. Also, she'll have to earn the money for

the downloads and such. Oughta make life interesting around here...

For ones that want the IPOD what about an MP3 palyer? Same basic thing,

usually less money. You can start with few megabytes too. MP3 players will

usually play MP3 and WMAs (windows media files) you can download songs for

99 cents at a number of places. Or you can spend about 20 bucks on software

that will turn any CDs you have into MP3 files that can go on the player.

My 11 yo daughter who has AS is extremely focused on Japan, Japanese

culture, anime (Japanese cartoons) and manga (Japanese graphic

novels). So for Christmas we are using her obsession to guide our gift

choices. She's getting a weekend trip with her dad to Seattle for a

big Anime convention in the spring. She's also getting CDs by various

Japanese pop artists, a gameboy game based on one of the anime shows

she likes, and a calendar and tshirt from Japan with pictures of

characters from her favourite anime show, Mobile Suit: Gundam Seed.

(any other parents of otakus out there?? maybe we need to start our

own " support " group!)

My 5 yo son who has not been diagnosed with AS (yet!) is a lego nut so

we're getting him a bunch of Star Wars lego this year. He's also a

gamer so there will be a copy of Star Wars Lego II, the video game,

under the tree and a Pokemon game for his Nintendo DS.

As a family gift we ordered an Xbox 360. There are really good deals

on this console right now while everyone's clamoring for the scarce

PS3s and Wiis. We're getting Viva Pinata and Marvel Ultimate Alliance

as well as a couple of sports games from EA.

I'm enjoying reading about other people's gift plans.

My 9 1/2 yr old wants a cell phone. Sounds crazy to me to give a child a cell

phone but his aspie friend at school has one (we met him at the park one day and

he had to call his mom as soon as he got there) as well as at least 4 other kids

in his class that I'm aware of. I do see the safety points of it, although I've

never let my son go to the park or anywhere like that without me (am I too

overprotective? A couple kids have met us there without their parents but I

think if I did that my body would suffer from panicking the whole time). Do any

of your kids around that age have one and if so, what are the rules for it?

I have a 12 yo DS with ADD and AS and a 9 yo DD. They both have cell phones. My

husband and I work full-time outside the home. The kids go to school after we

leave and they get home before we do. They call me before they leave home and

then call me again when they get to school. They do the reverse on the way home.

They are not allowed to play with friends until all their homework is done and

then they can't go play until after 4 pm. My son doesn't play with others much,

but my daughter does. She calls to see if she can play and then she calls to

tell me where she is playing. She calls when she gets back home. I am in

constant contact with the kids. They are not allowed to call anyone other than

the family members who have been programmed into the phone. Any other calls have

to go on the home phone. I check their calls several times a week to make sure

they are following the rules. We have found it a total blessing to have cell

phones. I don't think I could work away from

the kids if they weren't able to contact me whenever they needed to.

My 14 y.o. son wants a playstation 2, which he already has xbox, playstation,

gameboy advance, and he also wants xbox 360, which he isn't going to get, as

many final fantasy games as I can find and a few star wars games he hasn't

gotten yet, which is only two that he doesn't already have. Also, he wants

fleece pajamas and a robe and slippers, he asked for these!, and he wants a new

suit coat, which he wanted it for Thanksgiving, but it was $60, and I couldn't

afford it, he likes to dress up on holidays, even though I told him that no one

cares what he dresses like, he insists on wearing a suit. He also wants a

couple of computer games, GAMES GAMES GAMES!! and anything Japanese, well,

almost anything, he loves Final Fantasy, Trigun, Gungrave, Samurai Champloo,

YuYu Hakusho, Cowboy Bebop, Inuyasha, Wolf's Rain, Gundam Seed... that's all I

can remember!! He also wants a DVD player... I may be able to afford half of

these items... if I am lucky!! Kids have expensive tastes now a days!! Tami

I had this arguement with my husband the other day. I wanted to get our son a

nintendo ds and he doesn't want to. His arguement is that Isaac already has a

play station one, an xbox and a vtech system. So he wants to get him toys for

christmas. While I can see his point I am frustrated with buying Isaac toys

that he never touches. He loves opening the presents and then he just dumps the

toy and asks to play his xbox. The $100 pirates of the carribean ship and

accessories he got for his birthday is sitting untouched in his room. The only

time it gets played with is when we have other kids over. I'd like to get him

something this year that he'd love. But I can see my husband is right in

regards to the only time Isaac is off the game system is when we are out and

even then he asks if the place we are going has games there. Ahhhhhhhhh

Hi I don't think your too overprotective at all (unless we both

are!!)LOL!! I live in a big city in OK and don't even let my kids play in the

front yard by themselves let alone go to the park! In this day and age I think

we have to be protective of our children. As far as the phone I have heard of

phone I can't remember what it is called but I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to

find out. I used to see commercials it is designed for kids.

One thing we learned several years ago was that if we told our son at least 2

things he was getting for Christmas he knew what to expect and wasn't out of

sorts. When he didn't know what he was getting he was a mess and sometimes

physically combative even. We also give him other things and not tell him

everything.

Now at 12 he has even gotten to pick it out and we tell him that is what to

expect. He has been happy and calm since and he doesn't ask for it or talk

about it in front of the 3 younger siblings.

He loves Legos still and X-Box, Gameboy Advance and board games like Axis and

Allies or Risk.

Happy Holidays,

Kirsten

We have like 15 kids on our block ranging in ages and it freaks me out to

watch them play in the yard without adult supervision. They almost always have a

ball that they are playing with and if it goes in the street so do they!!! I,ve

almost seen one of them get hit more than once. Not my kids. They have a big

backyard with a fence and a great gaurd dog to go out with them. So I know they

are safe even though we don't live in a good part of town right now. Also for

Christmas my husband and I are discussing getting him a terrarium with a lizard.

He is always catching garter snakes, turtles, or bugs and trying to keep them

and gets REALLY upset if they escape or die or we just have to say no (my

step-dad is terrified of snakes) (his house). We keep trying to explain to him

that they are wild creatures and in the case of escaping probably had a family

they missed but it don't help. So a terrarium seems like a good way to give him

his own pet, learn some responsibility and

hopefully keep him from catching any more wild creatures and trying to keep

them.

Neat idea! I've spent hours cruising the net with my son making a wish

list that we email to his grandma and favorite aunt. They're both great

to buy off the list so there is some surprise, but not a lot.

( ) Re: POLL: what are you getting your aspie

for Christmas?

One thing we learned several years ago was that if we told our son at

least 2 things he was getting for Christmas he knew what to expect and

wasn't out of sorts. When he didn't know what he was getting he was a

mess and sometimes physically combative even. We also give him other

things and not tell him everything.

Now at 12 he has even gotten to pick it out and we tell him that is what

to expect. He has been happy and calm since and he doesn't ask for it or

talk about it in front of the 3 younger siblings.

He loves Legos still and X-Box, Gameboy Advance and board games like

Axis and Allies or Risk.

Happy Holidays,

Alisha it sounds like you are describing my son!! We now have a chameleon

and an iguana and several hermit crabs and a snake ( ball python) .. Lets

just say that's only half my pet list LOL

But.. The Hermit crabs I would suggest are the easiest to care for.. And a

great starter.

I always explain to my son.. That outdoor animals are outdoor animals..and

they aren't allowed sleep overs because their mom's won't let them. ( its

the rule LOL)

http://www.hermit-crabs.com/ Here is a great place to start!!

-- Re: ( ) Re: POLL: what are you getting your aspie

for Christmas?

We have like 15 kids on our block ranging in ages and it freaks me out to

watch them play in the yard without adult supervision. They almost always

have a ball that they are playing with and if it goes in the street so do

they!!! I,ve almost seen one of them get hit more than once. Not my kids.

They have a big backyard with a fence and a great gaurd dog to go out with

them. So I know they are safe even though we don't live in a good part of

town right now. Also for Christmas my husband a nd I are discussing getting

him a terrarium with a lizard. He is always catching garter snakes, turtles,

or bugs and trying to keep them and gets REALLY upset if they escape or die

or we just have to say no (my step-dad is terrified of snakes) (his house).

We keep trying to explain to him that they are wild creatures and in the

case of escaping probably had a family they missed but it don't help. So a

terrarium seems like a good way to give him his own pet, learn some

responsibility and

hopefully keep him from catching any more wild creatures and trying to keep

them.

Essenfeld <lessen@...> wrote: I'm so glad it's not just

me! I don't let him go outside by himself either. When he was in 2ND grade

friends house when I was in 3rd grade but times have definitely changed

since then!

Hi Pat,

The iPod's have a plug and a " home base " that you can recharge them on. You

might have to buy a base to go with it, depending on what package you buy. I

have a charger for mine in my car so I can charge and play it at the same time.

My dh brought home kid phones for our two younger ds's (ages 6 and 10). The

older two have cell phones as well, but real ones, not kid ones. The kid ones

have 4 spots for pre-programmed numbers. Then they can just hit the number and

call only certain people. My 10 yo finds this insulting to his intelligence but

it works fine. And I actually like them having this phone. If we are at the

store, he can call me instead of having me paged all the time. I also like the

boys getting used to using the phone. My 17 yo never would use a phone and

though he has a cell phone now, he seldom uses it and dislikes talking on the

phone still.

Hi ,

Check in your area and see if you are within an area that Cricket

Communications serves. They have a phone called a " Jump Phone " designed

for kids, and those needing bare minimum service.

The phone costs about $89.00 for the phone, charger and 1 card. You add

minutes to the phone yourself. There is only one type of card you can

get. It costs $15 for 150 minutes.

The phone has call and receive capability only. Caller ID, voice-mail,

call-waiting, games, etc., are not available. The only feature that

comes with the phone is that a limited number of numbers can be

programmed in.

I hope this gives you some ideas. Also, your local Sheriff's office can

give you some ideas of where to pick up cell phones just for kids. Good

Luck.

Her newest thing is she wants Santa to bring her this huge Dora Pirate ship she

train table with trains & everything that we thought was going to be a big hit

I had this arguement with my husband the other day. I wanted to get our son a

nintendo ds and he doesn't want to. His arguement is that Isaac already has a

play station one, an xbox and a vtech system. So he wants to get him toys for

christmas. While I can see his point I am frustrated with buying Isaac toys that

he never touches. He loves opening the presents and then he just dumps the toy

and asks to play his xbox. The $100 pirates of the carribean ship and

accessories he got for his birthday is sitting untouched in his room. The only

time it gets played with is when we have other kids over. I'd like to get him

something this year that he'd love. But I can see my husband is right in regards

to the only time Isaac is off the game system is when we are out and even then

he asks if the place we are going has games there. Ahhhhhhhhh

We bought Isaac a V tech system last year and he does use it a little, but we

already had an xbox and a playstation and he much prefers those. The good thing

about the Vtech is that the games are educational. I wouldn't bother buying two

controls though because we did as some games are two players. We found out

though that the two player games just give player two a turn after player one.

So really it's no different than the kids just taking it turns with the one

controller.

My son (5) never played with toys until about a year ago. He now plays

with Lego and Playmobil, and occasionally with matchbox cars. Up till

about four and a half his main interest was pushing buttons. His baby

and preschool toys gathered dust while he pushed any button he could

find in our house; by the time he was two he had refined his interest

into pushing buttons on video game systems. :-)

Given my little guy's focused interest in video games of all kinds, I

will give you his experience with the Leapster versus the Vtech

" V.Smile " system. My son has both. We think the Leapster was a

fabulous investment. He got his first when he was three, and I credit

the Leapster games with teaching him how to read. When his first

Leapster bit the dust after a great deal of use and abuse, we were

happy to fork out for a replacement. The games are educational and

also fun, even to a kid who's had his own gameboy since the age of 2

and access to both an Xbox and a PS2 with a large selection of games.

Even with all those more " sophisticated " games at his disposal he

still chooses to get out his Leapster and play with it.

Not so the V.Smile -- I consider that to be the biggest waste of money

last Christmas. He barely ever remembers that he owns the thing, and

when he does (rarely) ask for it, the games don't hold his interest.

The graphics and gameplay are very basic and just don't charm him in

the way that the Leapster games do.

So if you want a recommendation mine would be for the Leapster.

My aspie is 10 years old and he is getting more legos and games for his

game boy micro. He loves legos and duplos and wants to bring them

everywhere. He plays with them literally for hours. He got the micro last

year and went through a phase of chewing on everything so he needs a new

charging cord for his which he is getting for Christmas. Even though his

twin had one he couldn't seem to understand that he could borrow it to

charge his. He went through a very destructive phase in life and we just

stop replacing things for awhile but he actually put that on his list and I

think he kind of understands that it was an important thing but we'll see.

I really feel it is a waste of money to try to force him to play with toys

that are out of his interest and although I would like to see him expand in

that area right now it just isn't worth it.

His older sister is getting him another personal cd player, she got him one

last year and he used it alot until he broke it but it was really a helpful

item on long trips.

The reason we went with the game boy micro though was because it wasn't

something that had to be opened. I was afraid that if he had a meltdown with

it in his hands he would snap it in half and with the micro that wasn't a

problem.....he just chewed the charging adapter instead. Oh well.

thing! Oh my...What about that train table with trains & everything

that we thought was going to be a big hit for her Birthday and now it

sits there...oh yeah and all the trains and tracks, now they are real

pain to dust :)

get our son a nintendo ds and he doesn't want to. His arguement is

that Isaac already has a play station one, an xbox and a vtech system.

So he wants to get him toys for christmas. While I can see his point I

am frustrated with buying Isaac toys that he never touches. He loves

opening the presents and then he just dumps the toy and asks to play

his xbox. The $100 pirates of the carribean ship and accessories he

got for his birthday is sitting untouched in his room. The only time

it gets played with is when we have other kids over. I'd like to get

him something this year that he'd love. But I can see my husband is

right in regards to the only time Isaac is off the game system is when

we are out and even then he asks if the place we are going has games

there. Ahhhhhhhhh

My 5 year old DS has a Leapster that he got for his birthday. So we're getting

some games

for it. Also, going to buy his first Lego set. He loves his duplos but DH

thinks it's time for

an upgrade. Plus, some hot wheels.
