Hi everyone,

My 7 year old can't get to sleep. We give him melatonin when we have to for

our sanity, but we're worried about the long-term effects of it. So we try not

to, and he stays up until 11 a few nights in a row, then he's exhausted and

can't get out of bed etc.

Does anyone have this trouble, has anyone heard of good solutions, does anyone

know anything about melatonin?

Thanks....

This is what our psychologist recommended but we settled the sleep issues by

changing meds.

Bedtime Struggles Tape

This relaxation program discusses the causes and cures for common sleeping

disorders such as nightmares, sleepwalking, and the fear of falling asleep or

being alone in the dark. Children are taught to easily slip from relaxation to

sleep. The keys to a healthy bedtime routine are also discussed.

Ages infant-10, Item #C2, 1 Audio Cassette $14.95

http://www.learningpotentials.com/relax.htm

He said they had used it in a clinic very successfully but didn't recommend any

of the other tapes even though the names look fantastic. LOL

Any suggestions for helping a child fall asleep when the problem is not sleep

issues but more the fact that he's not looking forward to going to school the

next day? I play the radio which is the only thing he likes but still has

trouble falling asleep. I've tried a little relaxing water fountain that also

plays 8 different sounds like jungle or ocean that worked temporarily. I've also

tried a relaxing meditation type CD that also worked temoporarily. I'm out of

ideas.

We bought one of those bed tents for our son. That combined with an ocean sounds

cd

and a fan for extra white noise seems to do the trick. We realized that even the

slightest

noises or stimuli were keeping him up, so we basically created a little sensory

cocoon for

him to sleep in.

Good luck!

My Trev has the opposite problem---I have a really tough time keeping

him AWAKE! He goes to bed by 8pm every night and waking him up 11 hrs

later is a bear. I've tried waking him earlier, thinking he was

getting TOO MUCH sleep but that was even worse. I think he's sleep

half the day away if we let him.

Anyone else have this with their AS kiddo?

I am not AS but I have always been able to sleep, when I was little I could

sleep anywhere anytime. I could go to bed at 6pm and not get up until 8 the

next am. I used to drive my mom crazy - we would travel and I would sleep

most of the day in the car and then I could sleep all night too. The Dr

told my mom I would always need extra sleep. My husband is a truck driver,

he can go on 4 hours and be fine. If I don't have at least 8 hours I get

sick, whatever bug is going around. Rrr, I would love to need less sleep,

then I would have more time to pick up after the kids.

Seth can't sleep unless he's in a really contained space. He makes

himslef tents if one is not available and he has to sleep right on top

of something that makes white noise like a fan or an air purifier. He

also sleeps with a blanket over his face which has always bothered me

but I can't stop him so I have learned to adjust. He's been trying to

do it since he was a little baby.

Amber

Ya know I actually did have him in a regular tent on his bedroom

floor when we first moved into our house because he complained that

his room was too big. My therapist suggested putting a tent in there

to help him feel like his room was smaller. That worked and now that I

think about it he slept better. He ended up taking it down after a

while to have more play space but the bed tent would be perfect. I'll

have to try that. Do you know a good place to get one? I ordered one

from Lillianvernon.com last year and it was so cheaply made it fell

apart just when I was putting it together!

I have two boys with HFA and both have sleep problems. What we finally did was

get a script for clonidine.

My son is on clonodine and has been for a couple of years. It really

helped a lot. I'd would have just used benadryl, but he gets wired on it.

Hi Cyndi,

The most common side effect associated with LDN is sleep disturbances. There are

a number of sleep aids (including melatonin) given at

[low dose naltrexone] sleep issues

I thinks Dudley that has a list of things you can take for sleep- I

think I would add onto that list a very low dose like 1 mg of

melatonin sublingual will help you get through.

My doctor suggested 5HTP instead of melatonin, for the reason that melatonin supplementation causes your own body to not produce as much melatonin. 5HTP is a precursor to melatonin and does not have the same effect on your body’s natural ability to produce it.

I’ve been using 5HTP and I think it’s been helping.

I take it before bed, around the same time I take the LDN. Sometimes I’ll take it a bit earlier than that, around 10pm. I’m taking 50 mg, but I know 100 mg is also a good dose. I seem to do fine with 50.
