I don't know if this will help you, but my ds who is the same age as your child has moderate anxiety issues and he takes buspar for it. Once he got on the right dosage it really seemed to help. Subject: ( ) medication for anxiety?

The ONLY approved drug for anxiety in children right now is Prozac. That is what

most psychs will prescribe..10 mg. a day. I think it might be okay with a truly

anxious/wallflower type kid (even though I don't like SSRIs)but my daughter is

very bold and was having aggression and I felt it made her worse. It is true

that Ritalin and such can make kids more anxious....we found that to be true as

her tantrums went down 80% when we took her off the Ritalin. She is on Risperdal

which is supposed to have a calming effect, but again a heavy duty drug.

xanax, ativan and valium are all super addicting and I doubt any doc would

prescribe them for a child.

Tammy,

We had to give Xanax to get him to go to

school. But there were times where I wondered if we'd

given him a sugar pill or placebo if it would have had

the same effect.

's anxiety, however was due to OCD. He was

afraid of germs and getting sick and die. It was

awful. He didn't want to do anything because he was

afraid of everything. We did notice the hand-washing

was pretty dominant as well. Wouldn't shake hands with

people-including his grandfather.

We had switched psych's then, and he put him on Prozac

(started on 5mg and then 10 and we are now set at 15

for a very long time). This helped tremendously for

him. I know each med is different for each child.

Again, 's anxiety ended up being OCD related.

And the Prozac has worked wonders. He still asks

questions about things-if they are going to make him

die.... but he is able to do things he couldn't do

before (get dirty!)

When my son was on meds he took Paxil for anxiety, and he was only

10. He also took Risperdal, but that was supposedly for something

else. From all I've read, it's not a good thing to be putting in your

child. But, before people start jumping down my throat...whatever

works for your child is right. Meds were just NOT good for mine.

We used Zoloft (liquid) for my son for his severe anxiety. It worked very well. Unfortunately, he began refusing to take the medication (could detect the taste in his juicebox). Although there has been significant improvements with his anxiety unmedicated, it would still help him to take something. Every time we visit our psychiatrist I ask him about whether the meds are available in patch form. I do recommend that anyone thinking about meds and children on the spectrum, seek out a very experienced child psychiatrist, one that has extensive experience with children and the autism spectrum. Hi, everyone. This is my 1st time writing -I normally read from the

group and get help this way. -Thanks!

My 15 year old daughter has Aspergers along with Perseveration

(continuous worrying) and also has OCD.

She's taken alot of different medications over the years to try to

help her with her stress disorders: her worrying and OCD -and nothing

has helped her. She's taken Paxil, Prozac, Clonazapam, BuSpar, etc.

Currently, she is on Lexapro 40 mg and Clonazepam 1 mg. But, these 2

drugs are not helping her either! At night, she takes Geodon 160 mg

off-label, to stablize her moods and it does help her to a limited

degree on this. But, it doesn't do anything for her continuous

worrying -nothing has helped this. Her doctor is a Psychiatrist who

prescribes the medications.

I tried Homeopathy and the Homeopath tried 3 different Remedies for

the stress and none of them worked for my daughter, .

Does anyone out there have any help for my poor daughter with her

chronic stress? Thank you for all replies!! Irene

My daughter takes Lexapro. She does also take Concerta

for ADHD. We decreased her Concerta when we added the Lexapro, and that

has helped greatly to ease her anxiety. She hates when we alter

medication because she says we are treating her like a lab animal, always

experimenting with dosages & what not. But unfortunately, there is no magic

answer with these drugs. By the way, one time when she freaked out in the

doctor’s office over a shot, he gave her .25 mg of Xanax.

We do try the other stuff for calming at night. Warm

milk actually seems to help. We also have CD’s that she listens to

at night. Some are soft music, others are bedtime stories. All very

soothing. She didn’t like Yoga or breathing exercises.

Hi Tammy, Sorry to piggy back this on another response, I couldn't find the original! Anxiety is an issue that my son has, too. It's a combo of anxiety and depression. When he was first diagnosed, we had him on Zoloft. As he's gotten older, and more capable of analysing things a bit better, he's had a much better handle on the anxiety issues. He still needs meds, but not as much and not as strong. He's now on 5 mg. of Lexapro, and doing well on that. Finding the right combo of meds can be hell. Dexadrine (a stimulant) worked wonders for DS with the ADHD, but sped up his metabolism (even to the point where he was needing more and more meds because his system was metabolising it so fast) and messed with his appetite. When we transitioned him off of the Dexadrine, though, we had a really tough time finding anything as effective treating the ADD. The increased ADD symptoms increased

his anxiety, so we had fun. I can't say enough how much we LOVE DS's psychiatrist. He seemed to know exactly the right kinds of questions to ask to get to the heart of things. He's now on Straterra (non-stimulant) and the Lexapro and we couldn't be happier. One thing that was recommended to me, especially so once we were working with more than one med, is that we keep a med log. Put down how much and when dosages were given, but also start listing concerns or benefits you see. For example, DS got very fidgety and nervous after going off the dexadrine, but he gained 20 pounds pretty quickly. Keeping track will help you notice any trends (ex. increased headaches, weight gain or loss, sleep issues) and help you remember details for when you go back to the doc. And, if your DS is anything like mine, he's so concrete, that me being able to show him how his meds are helping (ie. he's eating more and not having as

many headaches) or how/why we may need to make changes (he's more irritable, not being able to stay organized, etc.) will get him on board much more quickly. I've had no side affects from the meds he's been on with the exception of the stimulant med's (dexadrine/ritalin).Hall Melinda <mlndhall@...> wrote: --- Tammy <vitzieverizon (DOT) net> wrote:> Can anyone recommend a medication for anxiety for a> child? Well, my daughter started on 5mg of Prozac today in addition to her Risperdal.

If the Prozac doesn't calm her down, then we may go to Strattera. I just don't

think she does well on the stimulant type drugs. At least the docs listened to

me.
