welcome Nicola

I'm in Ontario, and there are a few in Alberta

Kathy

Hello!

:

: I've been a member for some time, but haven't had a chance to post an

: introduction until now.

:

: I am the stay-at-home parent of two young children. Since our elder

: child had a severe adverse reaction to his DPTP shot at 4 months we

: have elected not to have our children vaccinated.

:

: We've been very lucky so far (fingers crossed) in that we haven't had

: much opposition to our decision. Despite his personal feelings in

: favour of vaccination, our family doctor understands our reasons for

: not vaccinating and respects our decision. Another MD treats our son

: with chelation therapy in an effort to eliminate any toxins that

: remain from the vaccines he received. This year we've been

: investigating various public and private schools (he'll start in the

: fall) and not once has it been an issue.

Welcome to the list Nicola! I'm sorry you had to find out about vaxs the

hard way, through your son being injured =(

<<We've found forums like this to be an invaluable source of support to

us in our decision not to vaccinate.  They are also important sources

of information, not just about vaccines and their effects, but also

about some of the larger social issues from which the vaccine

controversy stems>>

***I couldn't agree more!

  • 4 years later...

I'm not even sure if I should be here. My son just received a dx of

PDD-NOS but it's more along the lines of Asperger's/NVLD if that

makes sense. He also has...hold your breath, this is a long list:

Tourette's syndrome, ADHD, OCD and has been dx with generalized

anxiety disorder, sensory integration disorder and depression. He

was suicidal several times in the last year. Oh- and he's only 8!

He's currently in third grade. He has an IEP in place and an aide

for 19 hours (all academic time). I called another PPT- to ask for

a language eval. He came back in the superior range verbally but in

the " solid average range " for pragmatics and inferences. His

pragmatic scores are interesting. HE has some real strengths and

real weaknesses. His weaknesses are specifically in the area of

empathy. I'm very concerned about this and want it addressed by the

school. We have another PPT on the 28th to address the testing and

an outside eval we did with the new dx (PDD-NOS). The school is

saying that they are not going to accept the PDD dx because " he's

not like the other PDD kids. " Well, isn't that why there's an NOS

at the end????

Anyhow, I'm trying to learn more and figure this whole thing out!

sboyz,

I definitely think you belong here! Many of us have huge lists like

that! It almost never comes alone. My 7 year old has ADHD, HFA,

Anxiety, and SI. He is also anxious and has mood swings and on anxiety

medicine although he was never formally Dx with GAD or depression.

If you don't feel comfortable sharing, I understand, but when you say

suicidal, I just wondered if it was talk of suicide or actual actions?

My son has made several disturbing statements along those lines, and

although we don't ever ignore them, we don't know if they are attention

seeking or truly his feelings.

Kim (kim27502@...)

I think I would ask them for the written qualifying list of characteristics

that they use to identify children with pdd-nos. And there is probably not

one. But you will need it in writing for your records - especially since they

plan to use this " list " to deny your child FAPE.

I would also remind them that PDD is a spectrum disorder and that these kids

all are very different expressions of autism - unique to them.
