He is not as sensitive as he used to be, but has his days It really wasn't a big deal. My son was 11 when the dentist decided he needed to go for an orthodontic evaluation, and the ortho fit him for a palate expander. The only disappointment was that he didn't like the orange and blue, he wanted to get NY Mets colors and was allowed to choose the color combination, so instead he chose Red Sox red and white (second favorite team LOL). His appliance is slightly different from what your son will wear, in that he has to remove it to clean it, and also when he swims or does sports. We go every few weeks for the orthodontist to tighten it, we don't do it ourselves. He wears it without a fuss, although he does complain a bit when they expand it, but so does my NT daughter, it is a bit uncomfortable. There's never been a lack of compliance, in fact he is ahead of schedule and doing so well that he may not need braces after all, something that actually disappoints him, hey, you never know with our kids just what to expect! Guest guest
I have recently taken my 8 yr old aspie to the orthodontist by the recommendation of his regular dentist. She would like to fit him with a roof expander. His jaw is uneven on one side and the roof of his mouth is unable to accomodate all of his teeth. This appliance would be fitted to the roof of his mouth and cemented to his back teeth. Everynight for 2 months, we will have to take a "key" and turn it. Anyway, my question- anyone have experience with braces or mouth hardware and how did it go? He is not as sensitive as he used to be, but has his days. I plan on doing this over the summer so if we decide to go ahead with this he will only have to wear it during school a little bit of Sept. Guest guest
My only experience with a palate expander was with my NT DD - she was 11 almost 12 at the time and we had NO problems at all. We had to use the key twice a day and we thought it was going to be a problem, cuz she's a big baby when it comes to pain - but she said it really didn't hurt at all, just a little pressure, but no pain. Good luck. Janna > > I have recently taken my 8 yr old aspie to the orthodontist by the recommendation of his regular dentist. She would like to fit him with a roof expander. Guest guest
My son was this age when he started round one of treatment. He is kind of orally fixated and chews on his cheeks and lips normally as well as thinking his teeth are an extension of his hands. If he can't take it apart with his fingers he uses his teeth. Anyway. He has a huge overbite so they tried to move his front teeth back. He made more trips to the orthodontist because he was constantly taking parts of the braces off. We finally made it to the end though and I asked for a permanent retainer of course they thought I was kidding. He chewed them up 2 times and they cut them down so that just his front teeth would be covered at night with the retainer. Needless to say his teeth have returned to there original places and I wasted about $2000.00. Last month he removed an adult tooth( he's 10 now) and we are looking at a possible root canal on it and I'm not sure it will be worth it. There is a strong possibility he will remove the tooth again. He was very cooperative with the orthodontist when we were in the office but compliance was nonexistent. His gums were always inflamed and very reddened because he didn't want to brush and his fingers were always in his mouth messing with them. We did expansion on 3 of our NT kids and they said it felt tight when we turned the appliance but never complained of pain with it. Once their palate split they said it really didn't feel like anything different.
