Mine were just denied and their diagnosis' were autism,(aspergers)

bipolar,depression and anxiety disorder. They just turned 18 and were denied

because they don't have enough work credits?? I guess it all depends on who

reads the application? Who knows... We are in Ga.

I'm a little confused. SSI is Federal, Social Security. AS is

considered a disability. My son receives SSI. We live in Florida. I

had no trouble getting it for him at all.

Our letter says you do not qualify for disability benefits... You are not

entitled to any other Social sec benefits based on the application you filed. I

don't know the difference, but when we talked on the phone during our appt. the

lady knew they had never had a job. We told her they don't have any living

skills, can't drive, barely passing school ( one failed last year). My boys just

turned 18. I would have thought she would tell us which one to apply for that

would give them a chance at being qualified. She asked us during the appt if

either had ever had a job and we kinda laughed and said NO, they won't even talk

on the phone let alone go for a job interview. I guess we'll just reapply!

Social Security disabilty is only for the disabled that have once

worked and earned the " credits " .

SSI, Is for the disabled who have not earned the credits or for

children. You might want to apply for SSI. Remember, that any other

income is deducted from the SSI. For my son, out of 600.00 (I can't

remember what the max is) he only recieves 100.00 because of my

income.

SSI, is to " supplement "

Thanks, I'm going to keep applying. The reason we waited til they were 18 is

because we knew our income would be too high. The lady put the date they were

diagnosed aspergers, which was later than all the other diagnosis' as their

disabled date.. It's all goobligook to me. Aren't all govt programs just knowing

what to say and how to say it and knowing how to jump through the numerous

HOOPS.? I think they purposely deny so many the first time to discourage people

and hope they will GIVE UP! anyway, thanks for the clarifications and I'll let

you know how it turns out...

I would apply for SSI. No one told me. I actually found out from a

teacher. I had no idea. I actually have 2 friends that could never

get SSD, both have mood disorders. One is bipolar and the other has

anxiety issues. Neither one could get SSd becuase they were never

able to hold a job long enough to earn the credits. They are both on

SSI. Your sons maybe entitled to " back Pay " once it is determined

that they are eligible they somehow magically determine when they

were first became disabled and they will recieve their pay from that

date. For instance, I was unaware that my son could recieve SSI until

about a year after dx...he was awarded the SSI and recieved a check

for all the past months he was disabled. Since they are " adults " your

income may not apply. Which is great!

I DO NOT KNOW ALL THE CACLULATIONS OR HOW THEY DETERMINE ALL OF

THIS.. it's gov red tape and garggle talk to me. lol

Yes, 60 days.. I will be reapplying. Don't get me started about the fairness of

govt programs. I have an aunt whose child has been on disability since she was a

child for asthma. The way I figure it , my husband and I have paid probably

hundreds of thousands of tax dollars and when we need help for our kids, it's

nowhere to be found. The local school system won't provide services because they

don't have the money and my kids go to private school and you can't get any

answers from anybody I've called about pragmatic speech, daily living skills,

etc. Sorry.. I'll stop right there...

I believe you have a certain amount of time to appeal the decision as

well. You may want to pursue that, even if you " mistakenly " applied

for the wrong category (SSD vs. SSI). I would point out what you

told the intake person about them having AS and never have worked,

and I agree, that person should have told you the difference between

SSD and SSI. They were probably not wrong in denying the SSD, but if

you file an appeal they will look at the application date or the

original date of disablement. If you just file a new case I think

that starts the clock ticking all over again.

Also, it stinks that their benefits are reduced or eliminated if you

work. It's not like the kids' special needs go away just because you

work... if anything you have additional needs if you have to consider

sitters, etc. so you CAN work!

Enough of my rant... good old federal government in action!

Thanks Pam, I DO plan on calling them Monday.I think one thing that might have

messed them up is a fund my dad adds to every birthday , they have about 4,000

each in their fund and I see the limit is 2,000. I need to find out how to get

rid of 2,000 of their funds. How can they own a car and that not count (they

don't) but having a college fund of 4thou does. Seems you get punished for

trying to plan ahead...

With the work credits that's for social security disability NOT ssi.with ssi

they don't go by the work credits.my 8 year old gets ssi.and obviously he

has never worked before : ) .jmo,i would find out if they are also doing an

application for ssi as well if I was you.

I know that now. You would think the lady doing the application appt would know

what we needed and tell us.. Anyway I am going to see about 'getting rid' of

their 4,000 dollar each college fund my mom and dad have been adding to each

I live in New Mexico and my 8 year old has had no problems receiving benefits.

He is currently receiving SSI and we have a social worker that is helping us get

all the other benefits that he qualifies for.

i was wondering the same thing i live in fla. and my daughter was just recently

diagnosed with aspergers dx and developmentally delayed would she qualify for

ssi we have been going to and from doctors since she was 1 yrs old.

Toni, forgive me if someone already said this, but I'm on an

autoimmune board where people apply for SSI all the time. After

you've applied once, the generally accepted wisdom is to contact an

attorney. Somebody may have mentioned that already. I've been out of

the loop with a terrible tooth ache and a calcified tendon. The tooth

is out. Just got the tendon to take care of now. My parents, at 89

and 82, are more spry than I! Not for long!

Thanks, Liz. Do you talk to one that just deals with SSI or any ole attorney?

I'm ignorant about attorneys. EWW so sorry about the tooth and a calcified

tendon. I know how bad a toothache hurts. Glad you got it out! Never heard of a

calcified tendon but that doesn't sound all that wonderful either. I know what

you mean, I'm falling apart alot faster than my parents... Hope you get to

feeling better and SOON!
