Guest guest
Hi, I haven't posted in a while, but I'm wondering whether anyone has an AS child that has used or is using concerta. My son was originally diagnosed adhd/bipolar/gad/depression. Now he is only diagnosed AS. He has basically stopped taking any medications. He will walk into the bathroom to brush his teeth and literally come out without doing so because he's forgotten why he went in. My husband takes concerta for adhd and so does my younger son. My as child, Ashby, tried straterra when he was with the doctor that diagnosed him bipolar and he also tried adderall. Neither helped. I'm wondering whether I should ask his doctor next week to try concerta. Does anyone have a AS child that has had good results with it? He drives me nuts because he can't seem to remember anything or be organized with anything. Guest guest
Hello My AS/ADHD 8yr. old son takes Concerta 18mg. He has been taking it for a year now and we do see some good results with it. He tends to be more focused and calmer. On days when we stay home (Saturdays) I do not give him the Concerta so he can have a day off from it and we do notice a difference compared to when he takes it. On the very first day he took it we went to the local Science Center and he was super - it worked that fast. I also recently starting giving him Vit. B12 Dots - small tablets that melt in your mouth and we have seen a difference in anxiety and him picking on little 6 yr. old brother. Some moms have said the B12 shots work better but I know that trying to give him a shot would never work. Take care H. Guest guest
My son Noah, 6, took Concerta and it made him worse off than without it. We have had a little luck with Adderall XR. Guest guest
My son, almost 10 yr, had a lot of success w/Adderall XR for a couple years. Now, he takes Strattera and Risperdal. I think the Risperdal has actually done more for his focus than any of the traditional ADD meds, surprisingly. Guest guest
Hi , My son is 10 and was diagnosed ADHD until a few weeks ago. He is now diagnosed AS. He had been on Concerta almost a year. For the first 6 months by itself then they gave him Klonidine because we saw no difference. The school said it helped but it wasn't until school let out that we realized his meds made him lathargic during the day. When he was re-evaluated the doctor said that the Concerta was actually making him worse instead of better. He is now on Luvox and Risperdal. He seems to be able to focus alot easier and he calms down faster when he does get hyper. Anyway that was my experience with it. Hope it helps. <mosturgis@...> wrote: Hi, I haven't posted in a while, but I'm wondering whether anyone has an AS child that has used or is using concerta. Guest guest
Hi , Our 10 year old son takes Concerta, the lowest dose, 18mg. per day. During the summer we discontinued it because we believe his body became immune to its beneficial effects, but has been back on since school started. For him, there is no difference in his personality, but he concentrates on school work far more effectively. His growth curve has remained steady (he is tall and skinny). So, for now, the medicine is accomplishing what we had hoped to achieve. Our son has the following diagnoses: ADHD, CAPD (Central Auditory Processing Disorder), Pragmatic Language Disorder, Developmental Coordination Disorder. Although, the consensus was divided with some of the testers perceiving him to have Aspergers, the other examiners, felt that he is " too social " to quite have an ASD " at this time. Guest guest
Hi, My 10 yr old son with AS was given Concerta to help with focus and attention span. It was a disaster. It made him very aggressive and upset. He would cry and scream and mess up his room. I immediately discontinued it. Also, we have tried Adderall and Strattera, all of wich seem to strongly increase his anxiety levels and causes him to have zero appetite. These meds were not good for him, but every child is different so keep tryinng. Daphney. Horner <shorner@...> wrote: Hello My AS/ADHD 8yr. old son takes Concerta 18mg. Guest guest
Thanks so much for everyone's comments on Concerta. I think I will talk to his doctor and see his opinion too. Thanks
Guest guest
Hi , I sent you an e-mail earlier but wanted to add that my 10 yo also got real " moody " when he was on Concerta but I was told it was a normal side effect and if it got real bad should take him off it. He would snap at you when you said his name and always seemed to be in a bad mood like he hated the world or something. Also to Daphney my son has also been on Staterra, Adderoll, Concerta, along with Klonidine and Lexapro when they thought he was ADHD. When he was dx AS he was put on Luvox along with Risperdal and for the first time I feel like he is better for the meds rather than worse. Guest guest
My son has ADD and AS. He was on Concerta for focus and on Strattera for behavior. However, about two months ago, the FDA came out with warnings about Concerta and heart problems in children. It has been known to cause death. Since my son has a slight heart murmur, we didn't want to take any chances and took him off the concerta. ~MJ ~ Be who you are and say what you feel, because people who mind don't matter and people who matter don't mind.
