Tami,

I know you don't want him on any pills nor do I want on any

but can not sleep at night if it wasn't for the Trazodone. Without it

he would fall asleep in an hour or so then wake up all through the night, every

night then be cranky all day & want to sleep. His Psych put him on 50mgs at

bedtime. I give him one around 8ish & he wants to be in bed within the hour. He

has a nice restful sleep & wakes up refreshed. I tried a few weeks ago not to

give him it for a few nights...it didn't work.

Maybe give him cleaning jobs to do while you are at work. Can you call him a

few times during the day? Just a thought.

Take care,Betty

I don't really want him on medication at all... but that's just me,

We tried trazadone, that is the one that didn't work for 6-7 hours... not sure

how that is possible, but he must have a slow metabolism or something... but

he'd have to take it at 3 pm in order to sleep by 10 or 11 at night. It made

him groggy but he would fight it big time... but he is 6'1, 210 pounds... so not

sure about that... Tami

Tami, I don't have any great ideas, but my 16 year old son is the same way.

His sleep patterns began to change around the time of puberty. Lately, it

has gotten a bit better (I think the time change helped). He is usually up

very late and can sleep till noon. When he and friends get together on the

weekends, I know that they drink alot of caffeine to stay up. I've talked to

him about how it is a drug and addictive, but he thinks it's great. Pam :)

I don't know... once every 3 weeks, he sleeps all night, because it goes like

this, he will stay up til 2 am, then sleep til 12, then he will stay up til 3 am

and sleep til 1 or 2, then he'll stay up til 4 or 5 am and sleep til 3 or 4pm...

it keeps going this way until he sleeps all night, then sleep schedule keeps

varying by an hour or so... it's really kind of regular in a unconventional

way... just not the way I want it to be!!! AHHHH!! Anyhow, isn't that weird??

Not too weird at all, Tami. The human biorhythmic clock runs on a 25-hour

schedule, but is regulated to the 24 hour solar cycle by a substance called

melatonin, which basically causes us to get sleepy when it's dark. If your

son has a malfunction in his body so that it is not producing enough melatonin

then he may need supplements to allow him to regulate his body clock. It's

available in any grocery store. My son also has this problem (he's 3 now),

and we give him a peppermint flavored chewable melatonin we get at Trader

Joe's (500mcg). For a adolescent or adult, I would think a 1mg to 3mg dose

would be appropriate. Hope this helps.

Cool, I will have to try that... I know that sometimes I have a hard time

sleeping at night as well... mostly because I am worried about him being up all

night!! How long does it usually take to work, do you think? Thanks, Tami

Tami,

Both my son and I had the same problem, too, but we take Risperdal in the

evening

and that knocks us out, usually within an hour or two. The melatonin is also

supposed

to take effect within an hour, but with my little one, given the proper

environment (dark,

and relatively quiet) he'll be asleep in half an hour.

I'm really interested in the chewable melatonin you were talking about at Trader

Joes. My son always complains about not being able to fall asleep. I don't want

to put him on medication because I worry about side effects. We got him a bed

tent and that helps but some nights, not all the time, he just can't fall

asleep. Is this something I can just give him when he needs it and are there

side effects or anything like that?

BE CAREFUL!!!!It isn't always as black and white as you may think.

My AS ADHD daughter had the same problem, but we found out it was a

sleep disorder. Melatonin would have made it worse. Just be

careful!

I don't know any answers to this without using meds personally. We've used

several through the years. The best and most effective is " clonidine. " We have

used " tenex " before but like your experience, it worked 6 or 8 hours later and

that did not work out. Currently my 17 yo takes Ambien, a script med. We've

tried with less success to use melatonin. It works maybe 70% of the time and is

OTC. It seemed to stop working after a while. I have two boys with HFA and

they both have the same night/day problems. We realized with our older ds that

he is on a 36 hour schedule instead of a 24 schedule. My other one has a lot of

anxiety and I think it prevents him from shutting off at night. Sometimes if I

can keep him still for a up to five minutes, he is out like a light. Other

times, nothing works. So we decided to use meds with him also eventually.

There are a host of things to try for sleep issues- things like making a bedtime

routine. Taking a warm bath with lavender in it, no pop before a certain time

and limit caffiene, etc. You could find someone who specializes in behavior to

help you as well. I have no idea whether that works or not as we never tried

it. If you have a developmental doc or neurologist, ask them for advice. This

is an area that is not studied much yet.

Good luck!

Even though it's OTC, it's still a drug. You can also find chewable melatonin

at GNC stores. I don't know if that is a national chain or not but it's big

around here in Ohio.

My 3 year old has not been diagnosed with AS, but has all the classic symptoms

and signs of it. He has always been a very good sleeper until recently. I

cannot get the child to go to sleep. He usually doesn't fall asleep until 10 or

sometimes 11 at night. Then he wakes up several times throughout the night.

Last night he didn't go to sleep until after 10:30 and then he woke up several

times afterward. When I went to get him up this morning, I noticed that his

closet doors were open and he had been playing with his hotwheels.I don't know

how long he was up playing. I have tried everything that I know to do to get

him to go to sleep at a decent hour, but nothing works. Does anyone have any

suggestions as to what I can do to get him to sleep. He will be going to the

doctor to get tested for AS next month.

I think melotonin is habit forming. check on that. we do have some (the

peppermint trader joes chewable) but have only used it twice in 2 years

because of that concern.
