Guest guest
Hi, I would just have in your mind what you think his needs are for school and his education. Any supports you think he needs. Any accommodations or modifications regarding work or classroom. Show where HFA affects him in doing his work, homework, writing, participating, reading...whatever his areas are. At this age (and I think it can vary school to school, even in the same state, what programs they have, how willing the school helps students...) you may be able to have them address any socialization problems also. At least here, the kids work in groups a lot. Well, guess who may have problems with group work?! (sort of a sore point with me, I didn't get my son diagnosed until 8th grade and they still worked in groups, sigh! wish I'd had the actual diagnosis for it earlier, though I always suspected it; then there's PE and lunch and so on) Those are some quick thoughts! Good luck and let us know how things go! single mom, 3 sons , 17, with OCD, dysgraphia and HFA/Aspergers > > Hi, my name is and I live in Virginia. You know, I have always told them that I wanted to limit his group work, but they keep insisting he is doing so well in the " mainstream " setting. I have told them repeatedly that I believe it causes over stimulation and that I think it is a big part with his dislike of school. I guess I will see how today goes and then go from there. I have considered getting a mediator to work with me, but I wanted to see if I could glean insight from these boards first. Thanks again! Guest guest
How did the meeting go? Was it for eligibility for special education services or for an outside disability placement? Roxanna ( ) Eligibility meeting Hi, my name is and I live in Virginia. My DS (high functioning autistic) is almost nine and is coming up for eligibility again. The meeting is tomorrow and I was wondering what I should expect. We haven't done this since he was 2 and that was pretty cut and dry. I was hoping to get some insight from parents who have been through it already. I was told after nine, he can no longer have the DD label and that he will most likely be categorized OHI. That's actually what I want since he has been in the OHI program at his school since pre-k. Any advice or suggestions are appreciated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Guest guest
Thanks for asking. It was actually not too bad. It was basically just a change from DD to OHI because in VA you can only be classified DD until 9. He has actually been in OHI since K, so really there is no change to his service. One good thing that came from it was that the psychologist said she found an extreme need for him to receive OT in school. He does have OT in the private sector, but I always pushed for it in school as well. I finally got it last year after bringing letters from him Developmental Ped and outside OT saying it was necessary. Basically the OT at school resisted because as far as she is concerned, his handwriting " falls in the normal range " . She said that is the only thing the school OT focuses on. After months of her complaining, it became obvious that it wasn't helping him and it was actually making him miserable. His OHI teacher asked if we could pull him and I agreed. He then went " monitor/consult " . BTW - all of her OT kids are monitor/consult now. The woman just doesn't want to do her job. Now the Assistant Principal, who was at the meeting, as well as the reg ed teacher, want to redo his IEP now (not due until May) and get him OT. I spoke with his OHI teacher later and she said that she is going to talk to the AP and say that my DS should be switched to the other OT at school. I'd rather no OT then go to the OT who makes him miserable. > > How did the meeting go? Guest guest
Glad to hear it went well then! I agree on the OT issue also. What is it with school OT's? We have the same problems here. I do know one OT at another school in our district who is awesome. The one at our school is not interested in helping my kids do anything. The one we got at the high school level sent us a letter at the start of school and it was obvious that she did not know our ds was tutoring at home half of last school year and continuing this year. Either she didn't know he wasn't there and is pretending she is working with him or it was a form letter she sent to everyone she has ever had on her list. ugh! Guest guest
I know there are some good school OTs out there, but I do think that if you are lazy and don't particularly want to work, the school system is the place to be. They can't get away with " monitor consults " in the private sector. I also think that the really good OTs are drawn to the private sector for better pay. Regardless, you'd think that there would be someone overseeing the therapists to make sure they were doing their jobs. I, for one, would red flag an OT if all of her 48 students were " monitor/consult " . > > > > How did the meeting go?
