I think this is a battle I would just let go of and let him wear what he

wants, its easy for me to say I guess, My son at first didn't want to wear

shorts either, but now he is okay with it, i went out and bought him new ones,

let

him pick out what he wanted and said he would wear.

here is my son Logan on the first day of the swimming pool season

opening.......age 14 with asperger's! I can't keep him out of the pool. LOL!

In our case, that wouldn't help either. He would refuse to go out until we

got him the winter clothes back ... to this day (and he is 13) he won't wear

short pants/

Holly,

My son is 5 and we have the same problem - it started last summer.

In 's case it is related to his sensory processing. Last

summer I tried hiding all his long sleeved shirts except his very

favorite one and he ended up wearing that one every day (which he

was doing anyway prior to me hiding his other shirts, anyway). He

would throw a tantrum if I took his shirt, so I finally decided it

wasn't worth the battles and just did a lot of laundry. This year,

he is a little older and is starting to understand he does get hot

if he doesn't wear short sleeves. It was in the 80s here yesterday

and he started out with long sleeves, but ended up changing later in

the day when he got too hot. I have been using a reward chart with

him on some things and I added " Wear Short Sleeves " to his list of

things he can earn a star for on his chart. Doesn't work all the

time, but once in a while it helps. In our case, we just decided it

was one of those " pick your battles " things and unless it is a

safety issue, then it is not worth the fight with him. We are in

western NY, so not like we get the really nasty, persistent, hot

weather...

My son hates shorts too, he doesn't like things touching his legs unless it

is pants. So we just buy light weight pants.

Hello I Have a 5 yr old who does the same thing. This is his 2nd

summer doing it. He will only wear fleece or sweat pants and

shirt. We try and try to get him not to but we figure it's part of

his comfort zone. We have a boat and when we go boating he will put

his swim trunks on to swim, but as soon as he gets out he wants the

his warm clothes back on. Good luck with your decision. I

personally try not to worry too much and just find ways to keep him

comfortable. Give lots of fluids and popscicles !!!!

For our kids, it was like, as soon as they turned 7, no more

shorts!...We live in a city where it can get up to 115 when you take

into consideration, the heat index. My son went to church yesterday in

his corduroy pants and winter sweater, you know the kind you where for

Thanksgiving, watching football, had no shirt on underneath in case

he got too hot, although he never did, even though it was almost 90

degrees. In a way, I felt that people thought I was one of those

mothers who doesn't watch the news to figure out how to dress her kids.

But, Heck, I figured if they were that curious that they can ask me

directly, " why is your kid dressed like that? " I would then take the

oppurtunity to school them about my son.

I remember those many mornings arguing with my 2 sons that they had to

where shorts!...I have chosen not to choose this battle. I guess it's

utterly uncomfortable for them and I remember my mom forcing me to where

skirts and dresses as a kid and I swore I wouldn't do that to my

daughters if I had any. Well I don't, but I guess this is a very

similar situation. So I buy those pants that turn into shorts, this way

no money is wasted if I get 10 pairs of pants and suddenly they want to

wear shorts again, (By the Way, has ventured out into shorts a few

times this spring) We're So Proud!

My son is 13 he too refuses to wear shorts… sooo what I do is buy

lightweight long pants…. And let him wear them. I have found that my son

does not like any changes (i.e.… seasons, clothes etc…) So I have the tee

shirts and shorts in his room, by the middle of summer he just might try on

the shorts and wear them.

As my folks used to tell me… Pick your Battles… is it really worth the angst

to fight over clothes? Save the battles for the really important issues.

Yeah thats why I let him wear his pants yesterday. Its a good day when he gets

up and gets dressed with no arguments, so I wasnt going to dare to comment on

what he was wearing! lol. Pick your battles is right, thats so important with

these kids isnt it? And dont sweat the small stuff. I guess if he gets too hot,

he'll either have to deal with it or change into shorts. I just hate to see him

dripping with sweat!

I started laying out his clothes it took time my son did that when he was seven.

He is going to be 13 in two months and he on his own started wearing shorts. We

would make deals with him. Like you can wear pants but no long sleeve shirt. As

I said it will take time.

Personally.. I do hide and pack up my sons winter clothes..

He is 10 and trust me if you don't deal with it now.. It will get worse.

Kind of like when he's stimming or something and you let him do it..for

tooooo long ( my son would play one note on the organ for hours..) they can

stay kind of stuck.

Yes.. They have autism/aspergers.. But they ultimately need to live in our

world.. And assimilate to a certain extent.. Not to mention the risk of

severe heat stroke.

This is my opinion...but it worked for me.

My son, 14, also refuses to wear shorts... the only things he will wear is jeans

and tshirts. He will make an exception to go to the beach, and wear his

swimming trunks, but will not wear anything but jeans any other time. Not sure

what to do, because I guess they are only hurting themselves by sweating to

death...

I know.. That I have already commented on this.. But just be careful as our

kids may not see their own internal signs of heat exhaustion and that can be

DEADLY if they are over heated especially in places like new Mexico and

Arizona etc.. So please make sure heat exhaustion is not taking place

because they may not always realize it themselves.

My son gets like that. He will refuse to take off his jumper even if it is

stinking hot outside and he is red in the face. You could try hiding the

clothes and let him go in and pick his own outfit. It might work.

Hi!

This is EXACTLY what Max did/does. In about April of

last year, he'd ONLY wear shorts. Until Thanksgiving.

30 degrees or not. Then, he switched into long pants

and would ONLY wear those, 30 degrees or not. This

May, he switched back into shorts. Even if he's cold,

he won't wear pants.

What got him to switch either time is a phone call

(that I set up) from my cousin, . He looks up

to because Jon's a " macho " guy - tall,

tatoos, in the army, comes off tough, etc. I coached

Jon beforehand: you know, not to be too heavy-handed,

not to scold, etc. But just hearing the words from

someone he looks up to who's not his parent helped.

Hi Holly,

My name is and I have a son that was diagnosed when he was 10, he is now

14. He went through a spell when he would not wear shorts also. It lasted one

summer...by the next summer I had him wearing shorts. Sometimes it passes. He

still has one " vice " through, he will not wear any shirt that buttons. He does

have to wear a polo type shirt to school as part of his uniform, which he does

very, very reluctantly!!!!!! Good Luck....I hope it passes as Zack's did.

>One of my twins wears shorts and the other one mostly wears pants.

He doesn't like shorts unless they are long and baggy. He wears long

sleeves alot too! He wore a long sleeve shirt to school last week (

in GEORGIA) and last year was the first time either one of them

would wear blue jeans (they are too 'hard'). But again they have to

be kinda baggy ( not like the other kids baggy and down to their

knees but baggy) and n rips the tags out of everything and

still bites holes in his sleeves...And colored his shoes purple and

red with magic marker.. I did not buy new ones, he is having to wear

them until school starts again! And Noah wears red, black and blue

socks and NO WHITE to school... the socks he wears are the kind of

thin slipper socks that my husbands airline puts in their 'kits'

that they give first class. My husband scrounges around after

everyone gets off the plane and brings home any of the socks that

have been left behind in the kits and unopened...That is what Noah

wears to school... bless his heart... PS if he is as stubborn as

mine he will refuse to go out unless he has his long pants... Toni
