I have done some fairly involved research and have talked with some mental health care profesionals, as well as teachers. My question is...How do I aproach my friend in a kind and compasionate manor and say " Has anyone ever sugested that your child may Asperger's? " I'd appreciate any help. If he thinks something is going on,,,,,then I'd gather stuff off the web,,,,,,,maybe? If he doesn't see anything wrong,,,,,,wow????? Are there issues at school? Has anyone there said anything about him? As far as the school goes...He is in first grade. He has had a few issues concerning disipline and focus. The only thing I've heard of the teacher is that she seems nervous and seems to be hanging on by her fingernails. (I would be too if I taught first grade.) The school is small and I don't believe to be well funded. Guest guest Posted May 17, 2007 Report Share Posted May 17, 2007 Go with your gut! you may want to print out something from the Autism Society of America (or others) they have alot of good print outs about signs and what AS kids may do or how they may act I would definitely come from the point of "I know you want and do what is best for Tommy...what do you think of...." Guest guest Posted May 18, 2007 Report Share Posted May 18, 2007 Hi, We live in Groveport, a suburb of Columbus. My 12 year old son was diagnosed 4 years ago. Dr. Guy a nuero psycologists did the diagnosis. Only think is that the insurance only paid 400 of the 1600 cost of it. Since then he has been going to Amigo Family counseling for Friendship Group (social skills therapy group). Dr. Amigo does and evaluation yearly. It is a lot of the same things Dr. Guy did only Dr. Amigo does not do IQ tests. Once your little guy gets diagnosed set up a meeting with the lin County Department of MR/DD. I was able to give them Dr. Guys evaluation and he was accepted. The department didn't have to do any of their own testing or anything. The department is paying for Dr. Amigos thereapy goup and also for outside speech therapy. Children's hospital also has an Autism center and could do the initial evaluation. My isurnace does not pay for the Behavioral Heath delivered by Childrens so I have not used that service. I have attended a couple of workshops given by them however. OCALI (Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence Disablities) and COSERRC (Central Ohio Special Education Regional Resource CEnter) is presenting a free workshop on Fune 4 from 9 - 3 on Supporint Students with Asperger Syndrome and High-Functioning Autis: Strategie for Social and Academic Success. They are also holding a town meeting that same night from 6 - 8 " to help establish asseets and needs in the region regarding serice delivery for individuals with autism specturm disorders " I have not found a close by parent support group for just asperger's syndrome. The one I found was mainly for more sever autism and centered around the ABA phylosiphy. However, the parents of Tommy's social scills group at Dr. Amigos have become out own support group. It really helps me as much as Tommy going there. Sorry this was just a long reply.
