Of course parents have access to their children's school records. Also, there may be records at more than just one place. The school will have a policy on access to records. Ask for it in writing. Also contact the director of student services who may be more help than a principal. You can usually get a copy of all records as well but they are allowed to charge you a copying fee. Has the girl had any testing done? The parents are entitled to see the results of all testing done and to have it explained to them. Tell her to keep going up the food chain until she gets what she wants.

[sPAM] ( ) q on school records

My friend just called me, totally distraught, her 5th grade girl has lots of problems for which they are trying to get answers, all independent of the school. Today, she called them to ask for her daughter's records and was told, no way, they are property of the school, she was not entitled to them...and then, not for nothing, said the principal, but we think your daughter has ASD, but we won't tell you why.My friend wants to know if she does have the right to get her daughter's records and if so, what her next steps are should the school refuse.Tia,Barbara
