Guest guest
Hi there, I had the RNY. I chose it over the band for a couple of reasons. 1. I felt I had a better shot at having long-term success with the RNY because of the permanent restriction and malabsorbtive qualities 2. I live in Jamaica, and it would be impractical for me to fly to the US or Mexico for fills The cons to having RNY? I throw up a lot. Hopefully that will get better as time goes on, but it's pretty common. I get horribly ill if I consume to many carbohydrates or too much sugar. How much sugar makes you sick (it's called " dumping " ) varies from person to person. I say that the dumping is a con, but it's also an advantage. There's nothing like getting sick to make you stay away from the bad stuff!! LOL! I actually tolerate sugar much better than many post-ops I've talked to. My understanding is that the particular type of RNY that Dr. Aceves does lessens the dumping syndrome. -------------------------------------------- in Jamaica (yep, the island!) Guest guest
Funny - I chose the LAP BAND for some of the same reasons that chose the RNY bypass: I didn't want to have the malabsorption and dumping issues. And I think RNYs have to take medications (not sure what) the rest of their lives; I didn't want that. I liked the lap band because my digestive tract would not be cut and spliced - and it's both removable (if ever necessary) and adjustable. To me, that just seems safer, less invasive and makes sense. The adjustment (fills) issue is something to consider, of cousre. I found a local naturopath who does fills for Mexican bandsters, but I hear that in some U.S. areas it's hard to locate a doc to do this. You should definitely try to identify this before you make the decision. I have seen on some boards, people who've been banded in Mexico and are seeking fill docs after the fact; I just don't think that's too smart. If money is an issue, another thing to consider is that the RNY costs more, even with Dr. Aceves I think it's around $12-13,000. A lot of factors will figure into your personal decision, so good luck. We're all ready to answer specific questions as they come up. I love my band! Guest guest
Jackie, we (RNY'ers) don't have to take any particular medication, but it is very important that we take vitamins for the rest of our lives. That's not a biggie for me. I drink 3 protein shakes (30 grams protein in each) every day and take a handful of vitamins. I don't mind doing that, but it is an issue for many people. The RNY is more expensive, but I don't have the cost of fills. The cost difference wasn't part of the decision-making process for me though. -------------------------------------------- in Jamaica (yep, the island!) Guest guest
I had the band done May 10 and I have had 1 fill of 1.7 cc on June 17 because I was going to be in San Diego anyway so I decided to have Dr. Aceves do it since I was down there but I didn't really need it. As of today I am exactly 6 weeks post-op and have lost 30.5 pounds. I couldn't ask for much more than that. I am 5'5 " (and a half) and weighed 242, my goal weight is 135 (according to " the chart " I should be between 118 and 144) so I had over 100 pounds to lose but I chose it because you can get very similar results, it is not permanent so if for some reason you need to reverse it you can, but why would you I love it so much! It is less restrictive, I can eat a lot more like " normal " people and being discreet was important to me because I have told very few people about it. I also wanted to lose the weight a little more slowly again so it was less obvious and might prevent some of the sagging skin issues. It is a MUCH easier recovery, I have friends that had the RNY they were truly out of commission for 6 weeks, with the band MAYBE 6 days! Just my opinion but you get similar results, with less risk and a better quality of life, it was an easy choice for me. Hope that helps. I am in between getting the Band or RNY. I would like to hear from people that have had one or the other. The pros and cons. I want to know from those with the BAND how many times have you had to readjust the band and do you find problems with US doctors wanting to work on you knowing you had the surgery in Mexico? Thanks for having this website, it will be several months before I am able to scrape up the money for the surgery but it's alot sooner than if I had to pay here in the US. Guest guest
Tracie B. You will be amazed at how easy it is, it's not like a diet that is hard and discouraging. Someone wrote to me right before I went and they said it's ok to let hope back in, I didn't really believe them I thought oh I'll be the one person that can't do this or that this doesn't work for, I mean after all I have been trying and failing for years. But I do have hope again and you ARE going to do great and be incredibly successful!! Good luck and we'll be thinking of you. Steph From: tkbartek@... Guest guest
Thanks Steph and Everyone for replying to my questions. I am without a doubt getting the Lapband for the same reason, that it is less intrusive. I have 2 friends that had the RNY and they said if they had to do it over again they would get the Lapband because they hate taking the vitamins, and they eat way less with RNY. Another problem and I guess this happens with lapbanders is the " dumping " but I believe it occurs more in the RNY surgeries(?). Anyways, what I have noticed with people that had the RNY is the hair loss??? Does that happen with bandsters as well? The one friend, she looks terrific body wise but she has aged in her face and her hair is very thin. That kinda concerned me about having the RNY. My other friend also has thinning hair and has to take the " horse size " vitamins in order to keep her hair from thinning more. After being in the chat room and talking to Dr. Aceves about the results gained by the band and reading everyone's posts, I see the results are the same as having the RNY. I too, do not want the issue of the sagging skin, which I am sure is abound to occur but hopefully it will be less. Speaking of the sagging skin, does Dr. Aceves perform the cosmetic surgery on that? I have over 100lbs to lose, so I am going to have to have the cosmetic surgery done just so I look normal when I don't have clothes on...especially for the bf Any information on that would be helpful as well. The idea of losing the weight slower also appeals to me as well. I've been heavy my whole life, in fact talking to my sister who is all for this, she was saying it will be a shock for them. I haven't been my target weight since I was in Jr high/High School....a long freaking time!!!! So, losing the weight slowly will give me a chance to get used to the new me when I look in the mirror, although I'll be anxious to get to that target weight within a couple of years I am sure once I even lose 70lbs I'll be back to doing alot of the things I used to do. Since I've always been heavy, I've done mountain climbing (huffin and a puffin along the way of course...but I got there!), doing bike rides along the Monterey coast, and just plain running around. So, I hope by losing some of the weight it will get me back to being active to where the weight will come off easier with the skin toning up. So, to hear about 30lbs being lost after 6 weeks...I am excited for you Steph and also for the prospect of my own weight loss once I get the surgery. Thanks for replying Steph and Good Luck!!!! I'm happy for you and wish you the best weight loss success...and this also goes out to the rest whom have taken the path to a healthier lifestyle > I had the band done May 10 and I have had 1 fill of 1.7 cc on June 17 > because I was going to be in San Diego anyway so I decided to have Dr. > Aceves do it since I was down there but I didn't really need it. Guest guest
Kellie, Lap banders do not get the dumping syndrome. Some bypass pateints do not get it either most do but some don't. No way of knowing beforehand. The hairloss is due to rapid weight loss so some people withthe band do lose hari but it comes back, zinc is what Dr. Aceves recommends. I kow I lost a ton of hair after my pregancies, I thought I had cancer! I am not kidding, nobody told me this would happen. Dr. Aceves does not do the cosmetic surgery himself but we do have a plastic surgeon who does, Dr. Aceves recommends you lose as much weight as possible before the PS to ger better results. Guest guest
I would still go with the RNY if I had to do it over again. I *love* that I can only eat a very small amount at a time. I am glad I have the potential to " dump " on certain foods because it keeps me away from them! I could easily gain back what I've lost by eating ice cream, mashed potatoes, french fries, juice, soda, and other " slider " and high calorie foods and drinks (slider foods are the soft things that can " slide " right through your pouch, allowing you to eat more and get hungry again sooner). I got fat because I ate way too much and often ate the wrong things. I physically can not do that anymore, and I am so grateful. I don't mind the vitamins. I take lots of vitamins and drink protein shakes, but it's fine. It's just part of my life now. I took vitamins before surgery too. Yes, I am having some hair loss, but that is very common after surgery of any kind. I make sure I get plenty of protein to stave off the hair loss. I just uploaded a new pic, taken last night. You'll see that I look fresh and happy, and have LOTS and LOTS of hair :-). I'm not trying to change anyone's mind, but I don't want anyone to be scared off from RNY either! -------------------------------------------- in Jamaica (yep, the island!) Guest guest
Hi Maggie, Welcome. I'm Liz. I also live in Southern California (for about 5 more minutes). In August, we're moving to Boston for a sabbatical year. We must be out of our minds. Actually, I'm looking forward to it. I've got a 23 year old NT daughter, who lives in Washington DC, and an 18 year old AS, bipolar son. My son is having big problems with depression right now. We're hoping that he'll be able to go off to college in the fall. He has a nice scholarship to Dean College in Massachusetts. I think you'll find this board welcoming, informative and supportive. All the best, Liz in San Diego On May 23, 2006, at 9:09 AM, Barbara wrote: > Hi, my name is Maggie. I live in Southern California. I have two > teenagers (17yo son & 13yo daughter).
