Do any of you have advice on how to help a little boy, my son who has HFA and I

suspect dyslexia at least with some letters learn to grasp the concept of

reading. He is 6 now and already i am beginning to despair of how to teach that

letters make up words etc.

Do you concentrate on sight words using Pecs or a similar system or do you

combine phonics with learning sight words. Any advice that those of you who have

faced a similar dilemma can give me I would appreciate.

I recently posted here regarding the old school system

I used to teach both of my boys to read. I used the

look say method (non phonics) using the Keywords With

Ladybird system ( and Jane books).

I used this because my children the oldest one

definitely AS, (younger one getting there!) looked at

phonics as though it were an alien language.

I have no experience with dyslexia though, I suspect

you might need the help of a specialist for that one.

Both of my kids are strong readers now - after

completing the Keywords scheme I booked them both on

to time4learning, which is an online interactive way

to learn phonics this has also really worked - I've

noticed a lot of special needs people use this system

too.

Good luck,

Does he recognize that letters make sounds, and can he give you the

sounds letters make?

We did Hooked on Phonics for our son when he was six, and he was

reading within 6 months.

I wish my son had a photographic memory. He has terrible trouble retaining

information and then accessing it when he needs it.
