Guest guest
We took a family vacation this summer too and had similar problems with our 15yo son. He hated everywhere we went. He made many more mistakes than he usually does, and I finally figured out that, while he's learned to cope pretty well in the routine of his daily life, we had taken him away from that, and every little thing was something of a challenge for him. No wonder he wasn't having a good time. The only part of the trip he really enjoyed was our visit to a beach in California. At your son's age he hated the beach. Too bright. Too windy. Too noisy. Too everything for a kid who's hypersensitive to touch and sound. As he got older and more able to cope with that, though, he's discovered that he loves to let the waves wash over him. Something about the rhythmic nature of that really appeals to him. He did have one breakthrough moment, though. We were at the San Diego zoo, riding the sky tram. He was really scared until I pointed out that a lot of the other kids with AS in his social skills group would have refused to get on at all, and that he was actually being very brave. He gradually sat up and started looking around and was really proud of himself. Me too. Sue P.S. If anyone could give me a hint concerning how to stop my posts from having weird line breaks, I would appreciate it--and so would everybody else. I'm using a Mac if that makes any difference. Thanks. > > well our family just went on our first ever vacation since my husband and i got married 5 1/2 years ago and i have never been so tired in my life. with 4 very young children i knew i was going to be hard but i never thought how much Austin would hate the whole thing the entire time all i heard is " wanna go home " non stop he hated the beach the pool the zoo the battleship everything even all the food we tried to feed him for the whole week he just had melt down after melt down then the last day there he decided he loved the beach and screamed because he didnt want to leave the ocean he liked the way the waves hit his legs (something about water with him) he laughed and smiled and was the happiest i had seen him in some time up until then i couldn't wait to leave but at that point i hated to take him away from the beach. > > brandie > mother of > dylan 3 ruflux > austin 2 aspergers > mia 1 > sarah 2 months IND >
Guest guest
Ohhhh I am sorry that it wasn't what it was supposed to be:( It does sound like the little guy got used to the 'new' stuff, and unfortunately it was on the last day. I guess it is true, the younger the harder (sometimes) I am sure once you have recovered, you can take some lessons from all of this. (I don't know, maybe you learned some things that show what he has problems with, and how to handle situations) I don't know. Just MHO, but everything I go through has some sort of lesson. I usually walk away from all of my experiances at least with a little more knowledge. Hope you can see some positive. Kudos for taking the chance, however. *smiles* lisa B > > well our family just went on our first ever vacation since my husband and i got married 5 1/2 years ago and i have never been so tired in my life. with 4 very young children i knew i was going to be hard but i never thought how much Austin would hate the whole thing the entire time all i heard is " wanna go home " non stop he hated the beach the pool the zoo the battleship everything even all the food we tried to feed him for the whole week he just had melt down after melt down then the last day there he decided he loved the beach and screamed because he didnt want to leave the ocean he liked the way the waves hit his legs (something about water with him) he laughed and smiled and was the happiest i had seen him in some time up until then i couldn't wait to leave but at that point i hated to take him away from the beach. > > brandie > mother of > dylan 3 ruflux > austin 2 aspergers > mia 1 > sarah 2 months IND > > > > --------------------------------- > Stay in the know.
