Hi Dawn:

I used the bunny through the hole trick and then tie take the bunny ears and

tie them together. I made it sing songy, my Asp child learns better with music.

Hope it helps,

Sherri

My 9 1/2 yo ds can't/ won't tie his shoes. In fact he doesn't put them on

the right feet 90% of the time. Even if you tell him which feet they go on

he's lucky if he gets them on right. ( And he never has his shirt on the

right way.) His OT is working on shoe tieing and tried to convince us he

could do it and he almost can when he wants but not that they would stay

tied and you better have an hour to spare when he is doing it so it is still

on his goal list. And yes it does cause him to meltdown, even untieing them

frustrates him.

My 9 yr old can't tie his shoes either, but I'm not wokring on it at home (he

doesn't qualify for OT - just barely). But I do buy the curly shoe strings

(Walmart has them) and put them in tennis shoes that we buy....once they are on

his feet, all he has to do is pull the tongue up and the ends of the strings to

tighten. At some point I will start teaching him, right now the curly strings

makes our mornings much easier to do deal with - for us, it's all about

independence in getting dressed for school.

Hi

Just another suggestion - our shoe store carries elastic laces - very thin

strand of elastic that is laced up and then tied in a double knot. Then my son

can pull his shoes on and off. They are not the curly ones, so are better for a

12 year old " look " . He can tie but it takes him a long time and is still

frustrating.

good luck

I don't have any tips with tieing shoes. My son can not tie his shoes either,

but I have found something that works to get the shoes on the correct feet. He

was taught right and left by holding up his hands and checking which index

finger and thumb makes an L. The one that looks like an L is his left and the

other is right. I put an " L " with a marker on the inside of his left shoe.

When he puts his shoes on, he finds the shoe with the " L " and then matches it

with hand that makes the " L " , then he puts the shoe on the foot that is on the

same side as the hand that makes the " L " . I hope I am making sense, this is

hard to explain. It really works for him.

Land's End and L.L. Bean make some nice slip on shoes. I just bought my

younger son who is 9 a pair of Sperry Slip On Hiking/Sneakers at Stride Rite.

Hi,

I'm a 27 yrs old woman recently diagnosed with Asperger's. I never learned

to tie my shoes " normally " . I tie them with the two bows method it's the

only way I know/I can tie my shoes. Have you tried that method?

Hi.................haven't checked in for a while.........my son (16)

still cannot tie shoes...........well, he can but it takes forever and

they don't stay tied and he hates doing it. He just keeps his shoes

tied and slips them on and off...........when he was a lot younger, we

bought velcro..........but they don't make them in cool styles

anymore..........and don't make them in men sizes except plain white.

I garee - You'd think with all the shoe tying issues - they'd make some stylish

men's size shoes with velcro in this day and age!

Wears tennies to church. I do, too, but mine are dirty white

I tried the two bow method about a year ago. There were so many other issues at

that time that after about a week I put tying shoes on hold. I will try that

method again and stick with it longer. Thanks!
