Guest guest
Rose, It sounds to me like she thought he didn't do it himself. Which is pretty insulting in and of itself. When I taught, every year, I did a research project with my kindergarteners on dinosaurs. It was amazing the things we'd learn. The retention level was astonishing. So it doesn't sound out of the realm of possibility for a bright third grader to have written a beautiful project on an animal he loves. This teacher missed a great opportunity to help your son feel great about himself. What a great, great pity. Guest guest
Dear Pat, I was still upset about this, And with the way the teacher was speaking to me again today. (outch again) I mentioned it to the CSE chairperson and she is going to set up a meeting so we can all discuss this. (all of us together) the teacher was still " venting " on me, about the homework assignment and wouldn't let me speak about my feelings. Now we are going to discuss this at a meeting. I'm still in shock. what about the children that don't even turn in a homework assignment? Guest guest
Rose, Just a thought...Do you think that maybe her reaction was because she thought that she could just pretty much ignore him since he's " disabled " and now he's proven that he can learn, so now she'll have to make more of an effort on his behalf? Guest guest
Dear Liz, Our advocate said the same thing that you just wrote. Maybe she didn't think my son did it by himself. he was so proud of himself, and now so hurt. I was even impressed that he thought of the information to list on " Google search " to find the information he wanted. This is something that is soooo very hard for him to do. And this is the first time is was actually able to do this.... when the information came up on the computer with the animal of his choice and all the information that he needed for the assignment was right in front of him. He was so proud of himself for getting that information on his own. (I was shocked too). Then his teacher destroyed all that, in less than one minute. So, sad. Sorry for still venting. But when a child has AS and you know how hard life is for that child. When they do accomplish something, no matter how small it is. it is such a rewarding feeling. and then it takes just one person to come and destroy all that. and saying " I'm sorry " does not work with an 8 year old AS child. - Rose Liz Bohn <lbohn@...> wrote: Rose, It sounds to me like she thought he didn't do it himself. Guest guest
That's awful! Where do I start with my feelings on that? Not sure which bugs me most -- that she demeaned all his hard work instead of encouraging him, when he was so proud, or getting so bothered that he went above and beyond, which she should like? Argh, I'm mad for you! What ended up happening? I'd have probably given her an earful. beachbodytan2002 wrote: > I just got back from a team meeting. the teacher complained and was > very upset about::: for homework my son had to do an assisment on > an animal. Guest guest
Hello Group, I just wanted to let all who responded to my post, Who read about my son doing an animal report, that the teacher was so angry because he did more than he was suppose to... I wanted to share this.... I guess the teacher felt she needed to do more.... What she now did is tell my son to change his animal because another child in the class picked the same animal as him. even though my son submitted his chart with the animal that he already worked so hard on, she asked him if he can change to another animal. I can't believe that a teacher could get so angry over this, that she needs to make it as hard as possible for him. that she also needs to feel that much control of the situation that she has to take away the animal of his choice that she told him in the first place he can pick. he already picked library books to read more on that animal. asked for information on the computer, and now, today, was told he has to change that animal to another animal. WOW. I tell myself, We only have the month of April, May, & June Then its summer. I can't wait.

You've got to be kidding me! I'm pretty much a hothead myself, but I would tell that woman he is going to CONTINUE the project he already started! Does she have any idea how devastated he was to begin with? Some of these teachers leave me wondering how in the world they ever got into this line of work! And they're supposed to be professionals? Mature adults? PLEASE! Do you have any kind of liason? A good relationship with any of the administration? Even though school is only a couple months more, she can't be allowed to continue treating your son this way. What a *^ & ^%!!! Sorry, but I have been dealing with too many school officials with their heads up their & ^%* & ^ these last two weeks that I just get infuriated now. How DARE they make our kids lives harder than it already is! I'd like to see them go through ONE week of the crap our AS kids go through and see how they feel about them then, maybe then they would have a little more respect for our kids' triumphs in life! My heart and prayers to you and your son Theresa Harding

You may need to get clarifiaction as to the goal of the project. Is it learning or claasroom animal diversification? As any teacher should know that it so often is not the product that makes the learning but the process. As a public school teacher I am too often equally proud and embarrased by my collegues. Guest guest
Roxanna, She did hand out specific rules on how to do this but my son never gave this to me. Its on his IEP that he has processing difficulty and poor origination skills which the school is aware of and is working on this with him. But the teacher thinks I'm holding him back because she feels he can do this. communicate with no problems and doesn't need any help. Well, I took my son for a CAP test and it showed up that he has trouble with " decoding " & with background noise, when there is noise in the room he can't focus on things he needs too understand or learn. has short term memory issues. When learning something new for the first time. He needs it explained to him " one on one first " , & make sure he understands it, before he can do the assignment. It also shows why he has a hard time with spelling words, reading, & writing. also, some sounds in letters he does not hear so they want to see him again in another year to retest him. So, you can imagine how hard he worked on this animal chart And how he felt when she said " You did it wrong " ! But still, she thinks he can do everything independently, " but I'M holding him back " . She should start handing out specific rules for each assignment if she intends to be that picky. Without having specifics, how could anyone know? Instead, she should have praised him for doing the extra work. Incredible how they hate anyone who excels! Augh! Roxanna
