Why Arizona does not except ASD.

It was a decision made at the state level that says they only serve

children with one of 4 diagnoses: cerebral palsy, epilepsy, mental

retardation or autism. This means that even a child with downs

syndrome may not qualify for services if they have an IQ greater

than 70. Aspergers is considered a high functioning form of autism

and since you have to be relatively impaired to get ALTCS which

would provide any funding for services, they probably feel that it

is not worth expanding the diagnosis. The only children getting

services are those " at risk for institutionalization " so the higher

functioning kids do not qualify. There has been some lobbying but

since there are limited resources most of the focus has been on

getting the waiting lists down. Wish I had better news.

Subject: Asperger Syndrome

Hi,

I have a few questions that I hope that you can answer. Why does

Arizona not except all diagnoses on the DSM? After applying for help

from the DDD, my son was denied because he has a diagnosis (

actually 3 ) of Asperger Syndrome. I would like to find out why AZ

does not except this and why certain insurance companies do not

cover Autism Spectrum Disorders at all on medical or behavioral.

I would like to do something to change this!
