Guest guest
My name is Deb and I'm mother to 4 and wife to Ben. Our oldest is , 14 years, and he has AS. My other 3 are typical. They are Brennan, 10, Landon 8, and Kaylyn 3. We've known has AS since he was in 3rd grade. Funny thing is he was FINALLY diagnosed by his teacher after years of trips to different docs/neurologists with the typical umbrella diagnosis, PDD-NOS. In what I've learned about AS over the years, I believe that is on the higher spectrum of AS. His a great teen and, thankfully, we've never experience any of the behavioral issues that some AS kids have. He is mellow and laid back and very loving. He has been seeing a holistic doc for the past couple of years. His doc had been encouraging me to have Ry take the food allergy test and different urine tests and even a hair collection test (determines how much metals Ry is retaining). These tests aren't covered by insurance and we've been doing them piece meal but finally we will be finishing up with these tests on Monday (yipee!). The food allergy test concluded that has strong reactive indicators to wheat and dairy so guess what's next for us...gluten free/casein free diet. I'm trying to learn as much as I can before his diet totally changes (after Monday) and I gotta admit, I'm intimidated! I feel horrible about taking away his favorite foods like pasta and pizza but I feel we have to give this our best shot. Something happened two weeks ago that absolutely terrified me. Ry admitted to his dad and I that he hears a voice that tells him to do bad things. He calls this voice " AH " . We don't use foul language but he said that AH stands for asshole and that AH tells him to jump out of moving vehicles or push someone down the stairs. AH also shows him " pictures " of people hurt or dead. Scary, huh? The day after he told us all this, we got an appointment with a clinical psychologist who wanted to put him on an anti-psychotic drug. I hated to do that so I got an appt right away with his holistic doc. That was a 3 hr appt! His doc said that the wheat and dairy that he has been eating basically turns into an opiate which might explain the hallucinations (in addition to puberty and chemical changes in the brain). Wow. Well, that's where we're at right now. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all and learn whatever I can to help Ry.
Guest guest
Hi Deb & welcome to our group. It sounds like you & your hubby have an awesome relationship with & that's wonderful! Please keep us posted on how things go with the diet, we are here if you ever need to chat. I can't imagine how his confession made you feel, but it sounds like he'll be fine now that you're getting help. :-) Lizcoloradocropper <debluc@...> wrote: My name is Deb and I'm mother to 4 and wife to Ben. Guest guest
I really believe in trusting your instinct. Deb, does your son have BEHAVIORS to back up the AS voice? Boys 14 years old are developing quite a bit to just quickly respond to a Thought they are having with strong medication. I don’t think that medication alone helps deal the underlying causes of thoughts and feelings. Perhaps he is very tuned into the thoughts in his head and trying hard to control impulses. I would at least check this out with a Psychologist. I hope that helps. From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Roxanna Sent: Saturday, April 14, 2007 4:45 PM Subject: Spam Re: [sPAM] ( ) Hi! I'm new here.... Not to be the only naysayer, but what if the holistic doc is wrong about the AH voice? You should take data now and record how often this happens to him. That way you can compare it at a later time and decide if the method being used is working or not. Good luck! Welcome! And let us know how it's going!
