Guest guest
Sheri, My name is Ann and I just have to ask you something. Did you grow up in Illinois? I used to have a friend by the name of Sheri Kane growing up. My Maiden name is Beranek. My son age 7 has AS. Ann ( ) Is this something your AS child has trouble with as well? & Scouting Q added My 13yo AS son has issues with this also....In a twist, though, he feels the need to tack on " ...Sarcasm, Mom " when he's being sarcastic. It's quite a tension breaker usually. He loves to READ joke books, and then re-read them OUT LOUD! I'm sure this is his way of trying to " learn " what humor is all about. You can tell, as he reads a joke, if he " gets it " or if he's asking for you to explain it. He was just dx'd 2 1/2 years ago, and services in our area are woefully lacking, especially in the school's spec.ed provider (All of the school districts (there's about 15) in St. Louis County pass the buck to the Special School District of St. Louis....We're struggling through the learning curve on AS issues with the districts....his teachers is more than willing to learn, but next year he goes to high school, and a whole new world. Our biggest issue right now is Scouts....trying to get the leaders & other Scouts to accept, understand, and then accomodate his issues....we're still stuck on step 1. Are any of you're AS or HFA in a main-stream scout troop?

Guest guest
My son is 14 and just started HS this year. He didn't do well w/ Scouts because he doesn't work well in groups. However, he is in Encompass Adventure Counseling. They kayak, canoe, rock wall climb, ropes courses and go on camping trips. They also mountain bike. It's usually 2 or 3 Adult's per 4 Teenagers. It's worked wonders on AJ's self-esteem. He is still learning the hard way how to get along with his peers, but in this group he actually gets jokes now. He can recognize sarcasm good and sarcasm bad now. I don't know if it because this is all guys or because we survived the worst of puberty and he is growing up a little bit now but I know I see a difference. For years he wouldn't let me hug him or touch him and now I open my arms and give him the choice to hug and he has never turned me down. The first 3 times I cried & cried. He had so little emotion when he was younger, I'll take all the hugs I can get. Good Luck. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Sheri Kane Sent: Friday, January 06, 2006 11:17 AM Subject: ( ) Is this something your AS child has trouble with as well? & Scouting Q added My 13yo AS son has issues with this also....In a twist, though, he feels the need to tack on " ...Sarcasm, Mom " when he's being sarcastic.
