Hi Beth,

I have been going through the same with my 7 year old AS son. I just

had his IEP today and he will be transfering schools into a Autism

Serviced Special Ed class. These are mostly Aspergers Children or High

functionig Autism. My son's behaviors were esculating and with more

frequency. He was so frustrated. He majorly lacks social skills. He

actually had disassociated himself..he did not see himself as a student

in the class or the teacher as his teacher. He just entered the 1st

grade after 2 years in K. The demands of the class were to much for

him and he can't cope with it. Neither could the teacher. I am happy

for the change.

Hope that was helpful. Members of this board gave me some really useful

advice and I am grateful

I had the Autism Specialist come out and observe him in class to and

make recommendations for him. This finally got my son into a program

that will work for him.

Best Wishes,

How did you get an Autism Specialist to do that? Where do I find

that? I didn't know that there was such a person to do that.

I am in Florida also, Lee County. I initially had contact with the

Autism Specialist when the dist did the psych on him, he scored high

on the GADS testing and she recommended the assesment from the Autism

Specialist. She did the Assesment and he was given the educational

label of Autistic, in the meantime I recieved his DX of Aspergers.

Everyone was on target with him. FINALLY...

If you already have the DX of AS, Do they have support services in

place? If his support is not working for him request an IEP to review

his support services and find out what Special Ed programs they have

for Autism. He may be just like my son and unable to cope or adjust

to the stress.

I even called Tallahassee before my meeting this morning. If you cant

get anywhere with your school district I have a name & number for you

in Tallahassee to help.

Best Wishes,

Hello

Just have to get a quick note in.

Please, if you have the ability, find a way to stop what is going on

now. He is clearly frustrated (to me, because my son has gone

through something similar) He is way too young to be 'ruined' by the

school system because they don't know how to handle him.

I had my little guy in Kindergarten (at 7) for 6 months. I just

never got my little guy back. I tried testing and started therapy.

and still no appropriate diagnosis. Finally I pulled him out of

school. Things have been MUCH better but never did they go back to

the way it used to be.

Start today, and look for your local Autism Society (Google Autism

Society and your state and see if one is local and check them out if

they are!)

Find some area support groups, and today.

The school doesn't have to provide counseling, as I understand it

but they definitely should be open to an FBA and an immediate

assessment of what is going on to make him so miserable.

Don't let them tell you it is all him, or you for that matter.

There is always a cause for such distress in school, even if they

don't see it.

I don't live in your area, so I don't know what you have, but if

your local autism society is good, they will have some ideas!

Jump right in so you don't loose that little guys personality! It is

hard to get back:(

What 'asperger school' is your son attending? Where is it located?

City/State/school district??

We're in Los Angeles and have NPS funding and a list of services on our 8 year

old's IEP, yet the only option the district has is to include him in a program

with lower functioning students. If he was 10 then he could go into a

PACE/Gifted program at an NPS. We are in dire need of an appropriate program and

a great teacher!!

Thanks,

I.

A functional behavior assessment is an evaluation and plan to follow and

deal with the behaviors that are presented. It should be a collective effort

with input from the classroom teacher, anyone else working with your son in the

school environment and perhaps an autism consultant or other specialist. You

should have received a copy of the evaluation and discussed how to implement

the plan at an IEP review meeting. Here is information about your parent

information center. Contact them to get some assistance and guidance with

taking next steps navigating the special education system.

I put my 14 year old Asperger's Son in a different school this year, first

year of high school so he was going to change schools anyway.......last year

the middle school he was at completely washed their hands of helping him, and

that was because my Son refused to stay after school and get help on homework,

they had the program in place, but he was ready to bust out of the jail cell

when school was out, he failed miserably, all F's in all of his core classes

but they still passed him on, registered him to go to the big high school

here with 2500 students, when I questioned why they put him in Algebra 1

instead of pre algebra they said he can do it, he is just manipulative and

lazy.

That right there did not set well for me, the counselor told me if he doesn't

take advantage of the after school program then there was virtually nothing

they could do there to help him, when I asked to have him tested last April,

they blew me off, and told me the psychologist was too busy, and he would be

tested this fall at the High School. That was more or less the final straw that

broke the camels back. So I had to option in, at a different much smaller

high school, with my request from day one for him to be tested, so they

automatically put him in 45 day placement in special education until the

testing can

be done, they see him struggling, I have talked with the special ed Teacher

already several times, she says he doesn't ask for help so she is going to

ask him if he needs help. I told her the poor social skills thing, might keep

him from asking, yesterday they appointed a male Teacher that he really likes

to be a mentor for him, someone he can go to and ask for help, or anything he

needs, or is having troubles with, I really love that idea.

Our first IEP meeting will be the 28th. I have a team going with me who are

very familiar with the laws, on this, and my Son both. So I think or feel that

I am standing well. My Son loves the school, he said he feels more accepted.

And in High School that is very tough.

Hi,

This is a Special Education Class in the school district at an

elementary school. I have an appointment on Tuesday to see the class

and interview the teacher, the Autism specialst will meet me there

also, she seems to be a great advocate for AS/Autism children!

As it has been explained to me, My son will be able to learn the

Social Skills necessary to recieve the Adedemic Education, There are

about 10 students, as the children develop thier skills they will be

sent to Reg Ed classes during the day as they are able with the home

base being SE, at times there will be only 2 or 3 students in the SE

classroom recieving social skills, and education and other specials

OT, Speech etc..

They also have a middle school program that has someone to help the

AS kids transition with the many classes they have to attend, I have

heard that they are going to try something for the high school also

as this middle school children move on.

I know that there is a school for the more severe Autism and

emotional disabled.

It seems to have taken forever to get to this point. You have to have

the recommendation from the specialist and the IEP team before you

can even talk to the teacher or see the classroom. A dx of AS will

not get your child the this class.

This is special ed class is new for me. I really pushed over the last

3 years. Hope this helps

I am in Fort Myers, Cape Coral area, The school district is Lee

county. Florida

If he needs counseling to succeed at school, the school needs to

provide it. My son had counseling at school for two years. Not

individual counseling, but group counseling, which is probably more

useful for AS kids anyway. In what state is Lake City?

Question....What type of counseling should the school be providing

and who does it? My son only gets emotional support, itinerant. I

have an IEP meeting next week and if he should be getting

counseling, that I am going to ask for it. The school has yet to

even add the diagnosis to his IEP, even though the evaluation from

the psychologist (independent) states this is his diagnosis. The

school has been doing observations to determine what would work best

for him. He has a LOT of sensory issues, but have been unsuccessful

in getting OT from school or insurance company. The schools idea of

sensory therapy is to give him something to fiddle with. He does

not want to stand out, and is reluctant to use things that others

may see.

Sally,

When my son was in middle school, he was in two types of groups. One

was a psychological counseling group, run by the school counselor

(who had at least an MFCC), and the other was a social skills group

(pragmatics), run by the speech therapist.
