My son is too big for Velcro so he ties them once, terribly, with double

knots he can't get out, then takes them off and shoves them back in, so the heel

backs are all bent out of shape, and look terrible. His feet grow so fast that

he outgrows shoes before he can ruin them, I guess thank goodness for small

mercies, LOL.

I don't remember exactly when my son got out of velcro shoes, but it was in

middle school.

I remember wondering when he'd ever accept laces. He finally did, but I had

to overlook how sloppy it looked and be glad that he was finally tying his

shoelaces.

He's almost 16 now and usually just leaves them tied and slips the shoes on.

My son is 23 and still wears velcro. He's unable to tie the laces and

this allows him his independence.

They make curly laces that you lace up like a regular shoelace, but

to tie, you just put one lace over the other. My son didn't learn to

tie his shoes until he was about ten, and used curly laces for a long

time.

them at Wal-Mart.

It was about middle school that my son graduated from velcro to curly laces.

I was mistaken in my earlier post. It was intermediate school when he

finally started tying the regular shoe laces.

(I did secondary school in the 60's when all there was was elementary,

junior high, and high school.)

He ties them the way Barbara just described!

Anyway, to add to your post, Liz, I haven't checked lately, but I would

think Wal-Mart still carries them in the shoe section, hanging on a hook.

If you don't have a Wal-Mart SuperCenter near you, try Target.

Wow that is big for a nine year old : ).. are you tall Meira? My

daughter is big for her age and I have NO idea where it's coming

from. I was ALWAYS the shrimp in my class. Right now she wear a size

1 shoe, which is appropriate for her height. That reminds me of

something else I wanted to mention... when was a baby, they

were always very concerned over her head size and were always

measuring and remeasuring at every check up. She DID have a big head!

Mine " graduated " when we couldn't find any more that he liked and that were in

velcro. Like a few others said, he ties them once, then slides his foot in. He

can tie his shoes but didn't learn how until he was around 10 yo. He is not

able to make them tight enough to satisfy and that is why he slides them now.

My other ds w/HFA was taught how to tie in Kindergarten by a dedicated sped

teacher. He will tie his shoes now but prefers those kind without any laces

that you slide into. There are more choices today than just 6 or 7 years ago.

When my 18 yo was growing up, I struggled to find velcro shoes to fit him. I

also struggled to find elastic waist pants to fit him, usually ending up with

sweat pants. When he was in 8th grade, he suddenly started wearing jeans. I

attribute this to an awareness that he finally got plus a pushy sped teacher who

talked about his appearance a lot. Now he wears jeans. My 10 yo won't wear

jeans at all and is in sweat pants or elastic waist. My 7 yo is as bad but this

very weekend, started wearing blue jeans out of the blue.

That's another interesting fact, and I guess is attributable to the

sensory issues? My daughter won't wear anything but elastic waist

pants as well, and they had better be soft! Old Navy has great ones

to choose from though : ). And as far as tying her shoes she's been

taught HOW to do it by her OT but will not do it w/o a lot of

coaxing, and will NOT let me help her AT ALL. I guess most of our

kids have fine motor control delay as well? That was the one thing I

WAS able to get her on a 504 plan for at school, but now that she's

over 6 years old they offer NOTHING.

Let me see if I can get this straight for my " siggy " , LOL. I'm a " Mom

to 20 year old ds, NT (as far as I know although a friend of mine

who's a social worker swears he has AS). He's a junior at college

who's doing a double major in Physic and Mathematics w/a minor in

Computer Science but is pretty much a loner, though now that he's off

at school he DOES have a few friends. I'm also mom to a soon to be 7

y.o. dd who I suspect as having AS or ADHD or SOMETHING! She will

begin her evaluation over the next few weeks. I'm also mom to a 5

y.o. dd who is SUPER bright and NT as far as I can tell).

My son absolutely will not wear blue jeans.

I wear them all the time. It would be nice to see him start wearing them

all of a sudden, out of the blue, too!

Trey won't/can't wear them either. He used to, but just fairly recently hasn

t been able to and he looked so cute in those little jeans! I'll admit I was

a little disappointed, but it was a good reason to go shopping for new pants

for him! rofl

-My son is 7 and cannot waer pants with button/zip because of finger

strength. There are 2 brands that make really nice elastic waist

jeans/pants/shorts with matching tops too! They are Dogwood and Wes

and Willy. I get them online at CWD kids.com, bestdressedkids.com and

K and M children's boutique on ebay. They run generously and go up to

big sizes. Also, Geox, Ecco, and Sperry Topsiders make great velcro

shoes/sandals. My son takes a big boys 4.5 already at 7 and wears a

pants size 8, he is 4'3 " !

Good Luck,

One thing I did notice when DS started middle school was that he wanted to

dress just like the other kids, and none of them wore Velcro. My guess, at least

in his case, is that he didn't want to look like he was wearing baby shoes.

This from a kid who, at 11, wore men's size 9, so there wasn't a lot available

without laces.

Luckily for us, the kids all dress the same, baggy jeans and large T's, this

is great for a kid who, when he was just 3, went through his shirt drawer and

cut out all the tags..with his then terrible fine motor skills, let's just say

he wasn't very neat!

I'm 5'4 and dh is 5'9 (or so he says, yeah right) and our 12 year old is

already 5'6. We get all sorts of comments from strangers, who don't know he's

adopted, wondering where he gets his height from. I always say his father's side

of the family, heck, that might be the missing genetic link for the AS, who

knows?

sounds like my boys. They are 18 now, didn't learn to tie their shoes until

about 6th grade and now they each have about 10 knots in the laces and just slip

their shoes on. Last year they both took markers and colored their shoes, I

would think they would be too embarrassed to wear tennis shoes to high school
