Guest guest
No, I don't think that at all. I think she thinks my son doesn't have a disability and can do much better, but I'm the one holding him back and that is why he is the way he is. ugh! PATRICIA MAIN <mainpatr@...> wrote: Rose, Just a thought...Do you think that maybe her reaction was because she thought that she could just pretty much ignore him since he's " disabled " and now he's proven that he can learn, so now she'll have to make more of an effort on his behalf? When I taught, every year, I did a research project with my kindergarteners on dinosaurs. It was amazing the things we'd learn. The retention level was astonishing. So it doesn't sound out of the realm of possibility for a bright third grader to have written a beautiful project on an animal he loves. This teacher missed a great opportunity to help your son feel great about himself. What a great, great pity. Guest guest
that is horrible!!! you need to complain about that! I would go straight to the teacher myself and tell her where to go!!!! Guest guest
omg, that woman is awful. I'd make an appt with the principal immediately, and take a brief summary with you of the situation thus far, listing the communication you've had with the teacher, what she's said in response, done/said to your son, etc. This is completely ridiculous and she may continue until she realizes that her boss is going to hear about it. Guest guest
Thanks, we are trying to set up a meeting. She " is " an awesome teacher and my son is learning so much from her and he does love her. I don't know what happened with this assignment. She just got so upset with the way he did it and she is not hiding her feelings about how upset this had made her. outch. I can't believe that she is still that upset over this. Just 3 more months and then summer. yeah... cindy_pinder <cindy_pinder@...> wrote: > > What she now did > is tell my son to change his animal because another child in the class > picked the same animal as him. You may need to get clarifiaction as to the goal of the project. Is it learning or claasroom animal diversification? As any teacher should know that it so often is not the product that makes the learning but the process. As a public school teacher I am too often equally proud and embarrased by my collegues. You've got to be kidding me! I'm pretty much a hothead myself, but I would tell that woman he is going to CONTINUE the project he already started! Does she have any idea how devastated he was to begin with? Some of these teachers leave me wondering how in the world they ever got into this line of work! And they're supposed to be professionals? Mature adults? PLEASE! Do you have any kind of liason? A good relationship with any of the administration? Even though school is only a couple months more, she can't be allowed to continue treating your son this way. What a *^ & ^%!!! Sorry, but I have been dealing with too many school officials with their heads up their & ^%* & ^ these last two weeks that I just get infuriated now. How DARE they make our kids lives harder than it already is! I'd like to see them go through ONE week of the crap our AS kids go through and see how they feel about them then, maybe then they would have a little more respect for our kids' triumphs in life! Guest guest
She is obviously a control freak and is either too old and needs to retire, or has adopted old ways of teaching and needs to reform those teaching practices. I wanted to share this.... I guess the teacher felt she needed to do more.... What she now did is tell my son to change his animal because another child in the class picked the same animal as him. even though my son submitted his chart with the animal that he already worked so hard on, she asked him if he can change to another animal. I can't believe that a teacher could get so angry over this, that she needs to make it as hard as possible for him. that she also needs to feel that much control of the situation that she has to take away the animal of his choice that she told him in the first place he can pick. he already picked library books to read more on that animal. asked for information on the computer, and now, today, was told he has to change that animal to another animal. WOW. I tell myself, We only have the month of April, May, & June Then its summer. I can't wait. Oh boy, you need to contact the principal and demand that this nonsense stop immediately. She already knows he is done with his project and to ask him to do another project on another animal is ridiculous. If it were my kid, he would NOT do another project! What nonsense! Tell Teacher to get a real life! Roxanna
Guest guest
Subject: ( ) just want to vent, vent & more vent I just got back from a team meeting. the teacher complained and was very upset about::: for homework my son had to do an assisment on an animal. " of his choice " (making long story short). my son told me which animal he was interested in. gave me a name to look up on the computer and I printed out all the info. He glued photos & story on the subject to a large construction paper. he enjoyed talking about it and all the info he learned. he was even excited that he thought of the " site name " to look up the info on the computer. " His teacher wasn't " . She was so upset, yelled at him for having too much information. she just wanted little bits of info. To him & myself it looked awesome. She told me that was too much for a 3rd grade to do. My venting part is I was so shocked at her remark. I could just imagine how my son must of felt because he was so proud of himself for doing this and coming up with the idea. All I did was print out the information. She told me she later apolized to him for getting that upset with him for doing it that way, but I feel she already did the damage (hurt)to my son. Sometimes she gives him so much homework I can't believe she expects him to do that much. And yet, she complains about this. something he enjoyed and was so proud doing. Outch!!! How awful of her! She should start handing out specific rules for each assignment if she intends to be that picky. Without having specifics, how could anyone know? Instead, she should have praised him for doing the extra work. Incredible how they hate anyone who excels! Augh! Roxanna
Guest guest
Subject: Re: ( ) just want to vent, vent & more vent Dear Pat, I was still upset about this, And with the way the teacher was speaking to me again today. (outch again) I mentioned it to the CSE chairperson and she is going to set up a meeting so we can all discuss this. (all of us together) the teacher was still " venting " on me, about the homework assignment and wouldn't let me speak about my feelings. Now we are going to discuss this at a meeting. I'm still in shock. what about the children that don't even turn in a homework assignment? Well, I am glad you are having a meeting about it. I would NOT apologize that your kid did his assignment and did a really good job as well. Tell her to knock it off! Roxanna
Guest guest
Subject: RE: ( ) just want to vent, vent & more vent Roxanna, She did hand out specific rules on how to do this but my son never gave this to me. Its on his IEP that he has processing difficulty and poor origination skills which the school is aware of and is working on this with him. But the teacher thinks I'm holding him back because she feels he can do this. communicate with no problems and doesn't need any help. Well, I took my son for a CAP test and it showed up that he has trouble with " decoding " & with background noise, when there is noise in the room he can't focus on things he needs too understand or learn. has short term memory issues. When learning something new for the first time. He needs it explained to him " one on one first " , & make sure he understands it, before he can do the assignment. It also shows why he has a hard time with spelling words, reading, & writing. also, some sounds in letters he does not hear so they want to see him again in another year to retest him. So, you can imagine how hard he worked on this animal chart And how he felt when she said " You did it wrong " ! But still, she thinks he can do everything independently, " but I'M holding him back " . That is really awful. Can you request he be moved to another teacher? She sounds awful. Anytime a teacher tries to cure my kids, I run. We went through that a number of times with my older ds (HFA) and I vowed to take my younger ds and run far away if he is put with one like that. Life's too short to spend it proving a teacher wrong about your kid. And your kid gets stressed out and loses, wasting an entire school year. You should look up " executive dysfunction " articles to give to the teacher to help explain organizational problems. Also, there is a nice article of " How to teach children with HFA " and it also explains problems remembering. Learn to laugh off suggestions that you are holding him back. You realize that your support is crucial to helping him succeed. Whenever that happens, they like to make it seem like we are hovering mother hens. This is not a typical child so this is not applicable to us. Sometimes I think if they tell me stuff like this, it's like a badge showing I must be doing something right. <GG> At any rate, you could formulate a reply to this comment so you are prepared with something to shove back at her - like say, " Thank you for noticing that I care about my child. It took me a half the year to convince them he can't read, spell or write. the speech teacher also helps him with writing - doing webbing to help organize his thoughts. and with all this, he doesn't have a problem except I'm holding him back! You know if he could do things on his own, you would never be butting in at school and frankly, wouldn't that be nice! We'd all like to forget and stop having to research every blessed thing all the time to help our kids! It would be so nice just to send them off to school and never have to think about it again. Don't we wish! What would testing prove anyway? That he isn't a dummy? Duh. Lol. Testing for social skill, pragmatics, executive dysfunction - all these probably won't be on their list of tests, will they? Fine motor? Sensory? If he is having an MFE, be sure and request that they evaluate these areas also and not just the academics. And at the next IEP meeting, request teacher training in AS. Since teachie doesn't " see it " , this probably indicates ignorance on her part about the problems specific to AS. So a little education would do her good. Guest guest
Roxanna, that paragraph you wrote that starts with: What would testing prove anyway? he's no dummy! Another thing I'm adding at the CSE meeting! And I will keep my focus on " my concerns " . They like to interrupt it with how well he's doing with some academics. I know he has strengths! but, we are here to discuss his weak areas. We are bringing up the sensory issues, " he was just tested for that " . They are going to question the CAP director on her recommendations. They said the report was not clear. (it was clear to me) Roxanne, Your advice is always helpful. I always read what you write to others. I TAKE MY NOTES!!! LOL. Thanks for responding to my post.
