Guest guest
Hi Again Everyone, Thanks again for all your help in the past few weeks, I appreciate it. I have had something happen with my son and really needed some help. My son has been working on 3 digit addition and subtraction with regrouping and multiplication tables and he has been doing really well. Suddenly, last week his tutor gave him this same work to do and he was completely unable to do it, it was as if he had never seen the work before. This happened for 3 days straight, but today I gave him the same work and he started out unable to do it and then managed to get it. What is disturbing is that these are things that he had mastered and we are unsure of whether it is a memory issue or is there something else we need to be addressing. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!! Thanks Again, Luz LOL!!!! __________________________________________________
Guest guest
I am not sure what is going on. My son has always had this problem. He will know things one day but totally have forgotten them the next. I liken it to when you are trying really hard to remember a name or something but the harder you try the harder it is to recall. This happens to our son all the time with basic things like colours, numbers and shapes. Beck ( ) Memory Isssues or ????? Guest guest
Mark, Unless I am exception to most Autistics, I believe that your son has an excellent long term memory, but a very small short term memory. Also, if you ASK your son about a color, you might get a different answer then if you write it down. I often SAY something incorrectly, but I know the answer, likewise, I hear inaccurately auditory commands that drag on or are too wordy, especially when I am mentally fixated on something else at the moment. I am not always able to listen and take commands verbally very easily. If I am in the middle of doing something in my head, the outside word is closed to me. I might imagine something like that is also going on in your son's head when you are asking him questions. Try this. Ask him a question verbally, write it down, and give it to him. Then leave, keep checking to see if he answered it later on. I think you will find they improve their correct answers then instead of a demanded immediate response when 95% of their brain is dedicated to another task. Granted, abstract things are harder for me to remember, such as colors, names, shapes, compared to thinks that hard and concrete, like numbers and facts. Putting something in a sequence or time-line and in a factual sense usually results in higher memorability--If a timeline or sequence doesn't exist, I make one up so they can remember it better. Guest guest
Repitition, repetition, repetition....then whammo, one day it sticks. Sometimes down the road, you have to review and repeat again but it's there. Patience is key. I am not sure what is going on. My son has always had this problem. Guest guest
Thank you for your advice Donavan. You have really given me some things to think about when I next ask my son a question. As for writing the question down that will be great in a few years time. My son is only 5 and can't read yet so unfortunately he relies on verbal commands. Your insight is really helpful. Thank you. Guest guest
Probably short term memory problems. Even if he has " mastered " it on one occasion, you should not consider it mastered until he has been able to demonstrate mastery long term. So keep drilling the math until it sticks! My 17 yo ds is just like this too. By the time he got home from school, he would forget what to do and teacher would argue that he was just doing that on purpose to get out of his work. Turns out his short term memory scores are in the 1 percentile. Duh. Guest guest
This is one of teh most frustrating aspects of dealing with people who know nothing about ASD's. I get tired of explaining that just because my son knew it when you asked yesterday that doesn't mean that he knows it today. And I also get tired of being told that he is just lazy or mucking around because he could do something last week that he can't do any longer.
