Guest guest
Sorry, I must not have been on that long ago to know you but I'm just sending you a hug. Dianne <handymomx4@...> wrote: Hi, no one probably remembers me because it's been so long. I am a single mom with 4 children. My oldest has recently moved as he is 21. I still have my 19 yr old daughter with tourette's, my 13 yr old son with ADHD, tic disorder, and my 12 yr old son with asperger's at home. My 12 yr old son has had a really difficult year so far. He has only been to school 2 out of the 6 months so far. He has isolated himself indoors. I am going to a conference meeting with the school and the school board next week. Pathways for children and youth will also be attending. The school thinks it's as simple of Tyler not wanting to go but I believe there is more to it than that. He has been on zoloft for anxiety since Aug and was physically attacked in Nov by an adult. I could really use some support on these issues. The adult has been charged and we are awaiting his plea to see if it progresses to court. Tyler's testimony will be video taped if it goes to trial. Thanks Dianne

Thanks Dianne It really isn't simple at all, is it! I am having the same problem with my 17 yo right now. School refusal. Request that the school provide an FBA to determine what problem areas he is having with school in order to help diffuse the stress for him. There should be a way to ease him back in as well. Are they sending a tutor to your home for now so he doesn't get behind? Here are two articles on the subject as well if you haven't already read them --> _http://www.aboutourkids.org/aboutour/articles/refusal.html_ (http://www.aboutourkids.org/aboutour/articles/refusal.html) _http://smhp.psych.ucla.edu/qf/schoolavoidance.htm_ (http://smhp.psych.ucla.edu/qf/schoolavoidance.htm) Roxanna ô¿ö Autism Happens
Guest guest
Roxanna, if Matt has a 504 can I request a FBA? He is flunking almost all his classes. I am looking into a GASP, private school. Pam

But if a child with a disability has a problem, wouldn't they need to do an FBA without an IEP? I will ask around and see if I find anything. However, in this situation, you could probably request a complete evaluation be done and get an IEP in place to cover learning problems, behavior problems and anything else you uncover. I would request an eval for an IEP and include an FBA as part of the evaluation. That way they can look at any learning problems at the same time as looking at how he is functioning throughout the day. And that way, you get an FBA done whether you decide to go ahead with an IEP or stay with the 504. Either way, what is in place now is not enough. And I know already he is plenty smart so failing is a signal that there are major problems. I am dealing with the same issues now with the 9 yo almost failing his classes (4th grade.) He does have an IEP but very few supports. I think we have to get more help going for him. Roxanna ô¿ô Don't take life too seriously; No one gets out alive. Pam Well, even if it's for organizational and social - it might be worthwhile to get an evaluation to find out. Also, you might check into your school's programming because they might have tutoring available. At any rate, any kid who is smart like that and making bad grades - there is a problem going on. Guest guest
I'm trying to work with his team at the high school. His problems are not social either. I think he just has very bad habits and as we all know habits are hard to break. I keep talking to him about changing some of his routines (staying up late, making time for homework, etc)...but he just doesn't hear me. On a good note, his behavior has improved dramatically. I am going to ask the school about tutoring. He did meet with the school psychologist the other day and seemed to like him, so he may have some suggestions also. Thank You . Donna Rabe You can get testing to cover social skill areas. Test pragmatic language skills, problem solving and there are some social skill rating scales as well. Here is a link to a page - scan down to " social skills " section and it lists some of the testing that is out there --> _http://concordspedpac.org/TypesTests.html Roxanna ô¿ö Autism Happens _ (http://concordspedpac.org/TypesTests.html)
Guest guest
The school should have a school based clinician. Or they subcontract someone. If they don't help you may go to your pediatrician and ask for a referral for a Vineland or BASC test.
