Writing an IEP for a 3 yr old

I will be having my IEP for my almost 3 yr old next week. I am trying to

prepare on what needs to be written in it. I am looking for helpful hints for

anyone who has been down this road before.

I have been to my 14 yr olds every year since she was 5 but hers were

physically impaired.

We do have an official diagnosis of Aspergers from our doctor. We had an

evaluation from the school last week and they were so surprised at how smart dd

is. That was a little upsetting to me because it makes me wonder how well AS

is understood by them.

What I would suggest is to put " developmental milestones " or similar wording

in search engines and come up with what the " typical " 3 yo can do verbally,

socially, fine motor, large motor, etc. This is an easy way to generate

goals.

Hi Tammie, Give this website a look: http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/.

If you go to the education tab, there are sample IEP goals. They are for

older kids, but you can clearly adapt them for your child. We have one (IEP

meeting) for our daughter next week. She's 5 and was just diagnosed HFA/AS

so we're also trying to get plans in place for her enrollment next year in

kindergarten. The best advice I can give you is to be sure the goals are

clear, measurable and explicit and make sure you agree with everything

before you sign the document. Stay on top of them to make sure they follow

them. I'm an elementary teacher and I know that AS is very misunderstood

until teachers read and learn about it. Well-intentioned teachers can make

major errors in dealing with children with AS because they do not understand

it's implications. You have a couple of years to prepare for your child's

transition to kindergarten or whatever program he or she winds up

in. Hopefully your child's teacher will understand the situation. There are

some good links for educators as well on the site above. You might have to

educate the educators and truly advocate for your child. Good districts (the

one we live in is very understanding and has specific programs in place

for AS) I wish you well.
